RB Daniel "Boom" Herron (Official Thread)

That was one of my favorite plays from the night. Wasn't May's talking shit during the summer? Seeing Brewster trying to get up in his face and him backing away was great as well. I also loved seeing Dane blow by him on that long pass and them hustling(hahaha) to get back in the play and try to make a tackle.

I'm pretty sure he is. Or maybe that was sarcasm? Either way,. I don't think he was expecting that from Boom.
Taylor Mays will be a LB in the NFL. His pass defense leaves a lot to be desired. He plays with a lot of passion (Yeah, I know...) and he can lay out big hits when necessary. But, I don't see him as a Safety at the next level. He needs to be playing at the SAM spot.

I think Boom has played well thus far. The blocking of the Boren brothers has been a huge part of that. Give the guy a few sweeps to the outside. He really can make a few guys miss. And, if he can't dodge a defender, he'll make the defender want to miss him. I look forward to seeing what he can do over a full season of starting time.

I disagree full heartedly with that! Taylor Mays will definitely be an NFL S and go in the lottery just like he could've last year! He would've been the first DB taken last year, and he most definitely will be this year. I like Berry better but Mays' combo of size and speed is too much to pass up. He's another version of Sean Taylor on the field, players in college and the NFL will think twice when passing to the middle when he's there. He's a S all the way!

I know he was hurt, but frankly Mays didn't really impress me in this game. I've seen him play much, much better. That being said, Boom absolutely trucked him on that run (resulting in a big hoot and leap off the couch on my part), Sanzo made him look stupid on his angle on the seam route, and he had terrible technique trying to tackle Pryor (you know the run to which I'm referring). He's good, but this was definitely not his best performance.

Herron still trying to gain traction

KYLE ROBERTSON | DISPATCH
Daniel "Boom" Herron has rushed 50 times for 158 yards and three TDs this season.

His nickname is "Boom," but this year, that's the sound Daniel Herron has made as he runs into his own offensive linemen.

Unless things change, the next sound he might hear are the footsteps of fellow running backs gaining on him.

Coming into the season, Herron was assumed to be the next Ohio State featured back. He was thrust into significant action in 2008 as a redshirt freshman and responded well.

The coaching staff also hoped Brandon Saine was back after an injury-riddled 2008 to back up Herron and serve as an effective receiver.

Three weeks into the season, though, the running backs picture has yet to settle.

Herron has had most of the carries (50) but has struggled at times. He is averaging 3.2 yards a carry, with three carries of 10 yards or longer.

No season rushing leader for Ohio State has averaged less than 4.0 since Rick Galbos in 1971 (3.8).

"I think Boom had a couple chances last week (against Toledo), where he just got shoestringed (tackled), and you could see where he might pop it," coach Jim Tressel said. "And all you need is to pop it and all your yards per carry is totally skewed. I haven't seen his grade and so forth as being anything less than excellent. He's where he's supposed to be."

Ohio State's Daniel Herron averaged 5.4 yards a carry against Illinois and scored two touchdowns.

"Boom" had room for once, and he made the most of it.

Ohio State tailback Daniel "Boom" Herron had endured a frustrating start to the season, getting repeatedly stuffed at the line and averaging only 3.2 yards per carry through three games.

Yesterday against Illinois, probably no OSU player was more relieved to get the running game on track than Herron, who rushed for 75 yards on 14 carries for a solid 5.4-yard average. He also scored two touchdowns, giving him a streak of eight straight games with at least one TD.

"It was wonderful to have some room," he said. "I wanted to pick it up this year. The first three games, I didn't quite play like I wanted to."

Herron came up big with the Buckeyes leading 6-0 in the second quarter. They reached the Illini's 21-yard line in a driving rain. Herron took the next four handoffs and gained 9, 3 and 4 yards and, finally, took a pitch to the left and ran through a defender at the 1-yard line for a touchdown that gave OSU breathing room at 13-0.

"To open up the Big Ten, we wanted to come out and definitely have a better run game going," Herron said. "The offensive line has been working hard and the running backs have been working hard, and today it showed."

Buckeye blowout
Herron has best game of season
By DANA SULONEN Tribune Chronicle
POSTED: September 27, 2009

COLUMBUS - Ohio State running back Dan "Boom" Herron wouldn't come out and say if his performance during the Buckeyes' 30-0 victory over Illinois was his best of the season.

Instead, he cracked a smile and played the humble card.

"I'll have to go back to the film and check it out before I can answer that," Herron said.

One doesn't need to fish through film to know Saturday was Herron's best game of the year.

The Warren G. Harding graduate rushed for 75 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries. His previous best was in the season opener against Navy when he rushed for 72 yards and one score. He also extended his eight-game streak of scoring at least one TD.

Herron was a part of a running attack that combined for 236 yards. Brandon Saine was the leading rusher with 81 yards and quarterback Terrelle Pryor added 59.

"We've been working hard and the time was going to come," Herron said. "It's was just our time to make it happen today and things worked out pretty well. And we just have to keep moving forward."

Just in case anyone wasn't aware, Boom has scored a rushing TD in each of his last 8 games. I expect that will continue with IND coming up this week. I'll admit that I was hoping for more from Boom so far this year, but he's putting forth the effort, and he will be an asset for this team. Any guy who puts at least 6 points on the board is good in my book.

good to see boom in pads and jumping around on the sidelines. im guessing holding him out of tonights game is just to get him back to 100% and he could have gone if needed. look forward to seeing him back in action next week.

I just transferred this to DVD last night and I was really impressed by Boom being so into the game and being the first to congratulate everyone off the field once they got to the sidelines. Boom is a solid guy and a great teammate.

You don't make the trip unless the coach is willing to put you in the game. Agree he must be game ready.
