Ohio State's Daniel Herron averaged 5.4 yards a carry against Illinois and scored two touchdowns.
"Boom" had room for once, and he made the most of it.
Ohio State tailback Daniel "Boom" Herron had endured a frustrating start to the season, getting repeatedly stuffed at the line and averaging only 3.2 yards per carry through three games.
Yesterday against Illinois, probably no OSU player was more relieved to get the running game on track than Herron, who rushed for 75 yards on 14 carries for a solid 5.4-yard average. He also scored two touchdowns, giving him a streak of eight straight games with at least one TD.
"It was wonderful to have some room," he said. "I wanted to pick it up this year. The first three games, I didn't quite play like I wanted to."
Herron came up big with the Buckeyes leading 6-0 in the second quarter. They reached the Illini's 21-yard line in a driving rain. Herron took the next four handoffs and gained 9, 3 and 4 yards and, finally, took a pitch to the left and ran through a defender at the 1-yard line for a touchdown that gave OSU breathing room at 13-0.
"To open up the Big Ten, we wanted to come out and definitely have a better run game going," Herron said. "The offensive line has been working hard and the running backs have been working hard, and today it showed."
