RB Daniel "Boom" Herron (Official Thread)

Looking at the pictures from media day, Boom looks ready... and hungry. He's starting to take on the look of an all american back, and he's shown that he has the vision.

Bold predictions aren't worth the bandwidth they take up since no one will ever bother to go back and check. That said, I have a feeling that this will be a huge year for Boom.

USC fans are discounting him on their forums. I'm thinking he's ready to lower the "Boom" on USC!

Yeah, let them talk their smack, Boom had some pretty good runs against them last year, we just didn't have much of a passing attack to balance things out.

Oh, and Boom is built very much like another back that had a good day against SC last year, Jacquizz Rodgers.

Count me as one aboard the Boom train. I'm expecting big things from him this season, and I think he will shock a lot of people. He showed the ability to be a solid RB last year when Beanie was sidelined, and late in the season he started seeing his lanes much better and was breaking off big runs on a regular basis. I think he's got deceptive speed once he breaks into the secondary, and he plays much bigger than he looks. Let other teams dismiss him, I hope they do it all season. He won't garner much attention this season with TP on the same field, and I don't expect him to be as exciting as Beanie, but I think he will be a big part of the offense. I'm thinking he'll be one you can count on for 3+ yds on any carry, plus break free for a big one a couple times a game. With the other talent on this offense, that should be more than enough to keep the chains moving on a regular basis. Even though TP will be the star of the offense, I'll be looking forward to watching Boom become the next great OSU RB. Based on the pics from spring practice/media day, he seems to have a healthy amount of confidence, and a fun attitude toward the game. Here's hoping that translates into a big season for Danny and The Buckeyes!

BUSTING LOOSE Tailback Daniel Herron blasts through a gang of Minnesota tacklers during a game last season in Ohio Stadium. Herron rushed for 439 yards in backing up Chris "Beanie" Wells in 2008.
Somewhere along the way, Daniel Herron's nickname changed subtly in spelling and mightily in meaning.

"I'm not sure, but I think that happened somewhere between Warren Harding High School and Ohio State," said his former high school coach, Thom McDaniels. "I called him Danny most of the time."

These days, he's known to many as "Boom." He is a third-year sophomore who is first in line today to take the place of Chris "Beanie" Wells as the starting tailback for the Buckeyes.

But his father, the Rev. David Herron, has always referred to his second son as "Boone." That's right, as in Daniel Boone, the 18th century American pioneer and trailblazer who helped open the nation's midsection.

"We nicknamed him Boone, because our oldest son, David, we called him 'Crockett,' you know, after the frontiersman?" Rev. Herron said, laughing.

Now it's starting to make sense. But no matter what you call Daniel Herron the running back, he wears jersey No. 1 on offense, and depending on how the start of the game goes today, he likely will get the first carry in the post-Beanie era.

"I feel good about it," Herron said. "I just have to stay confident and keep working hard. Getting to be the guy, it's a big deal and a big honor.

"You've got to be able to be counted on to carry the load for the team, and do all the little things right."

"Boom" hits the big stage

COLUMBUS ? Big games, marquee contests, match-ups between two highly-ranked teams in prime time on national television. Playing in such games was one of the main factors that brought Daniel "Boom" Herron to Ohio State.

"Coming to Ohio State was an honor," he said. "With all of the great tradition and being able to be on the big stage is huge. Playing in games like this is huge, and not everyone gets this chance."

When Heron's seventh-ranked Buckeyes square off with third-ranked USC Saturday night, Ohio State will be battling more than just the Trojans. They will be fighting with the national perception they cannot win the big game.

Ohio State, under head coach Jim Tressel, has earned that reputation. Last season the Buckeyes had three marquee match-ups, at USC, home to Penn State and against Texas in the Fiesta Bowl. The Buckeyes dropped all three contests, including a 35-3 drubbing at the hands of the Trojans.
