BUSTING LOOSE Tailback Daniel Herron blasts through a gang of Minnesota tacklers during a game last season in Ohio Stadium. Herron rushed for 439 yards in backing up Chris "Beanie" Wells in 2008.
Somewhere along the way, Daniel Herron's nickname changed subtly in spelling and mightily in meaning.
"I'm not sure, but I think that happened somewhere between Warren Harding High School and Ohio State," said his former high school coach, Thom McDaniels. "I called him Danny most of the time."
These days, he's known to many as "Boom." He is a third-year sophomore who is first in line today to take the place of Chris "Beanie" Wells as the starting tailback for the Buckeyes.
But his father, the Rev. David Herron, has always referred to his second son as "Boone." That's right, as in Daniel Boone, the 18th century American pioneer and trailblazer who helped open the nation's midsection.
"We nicknamed him Boone, because our oldest son, David, we called him 'Crockett,' you know, after the frontiersman?" Rev. Herron said, laughing.
Now it's starting to make sense. But no matter what you call Daniel Herron the running back, he wears jersey No. 1 on offense, and depending on how the start of the game goes today, he likely will get the first carry in the post-Beanie era.
"I feel good about it," Herron said. "I just have to stay confident and keep working hard. Getting to be the guy, it's a big deal and a big honor.
"You've got to be able to be counted on to carry the load for the team, and do all the little things right."
