Ohio State's Dallan Hayden was ready when his number was called, 'He's got a chance to be a really good back'
Unlike many members of Ohio State’s freshman class, Dallan Hayden didn’t skip the second half of his senior year of high school at Christian Brothers in Memphis, Tennesee to come to college early. The four-star running back instead enrolled in June, something that typically makes it more difficult for a young player to get on the field.
Had things gone differently, Hayden may not have been on the field for the Buckeyes much if at all in 2022. A season-ending injury to redshirt freshman Evan Pryor, who was set to factor into the offense alongside fellow running backs TreVeyon Henderson and Miyan Williams, in the preseason meant that after just three months on campus, Hayden was the Scarlet and Gray’s No. 3 back.
“I remember when my man got hurt, I had texted him, I was like, ‘I’m gonna step up for you,’” Hayden recalled of Pryor. “He kinda took me in, him and Tre like took me as a little brother, especially both of them tell me I’m talented and I can help this team. But when EP got hurt, it kinda hurt us all. So we all just said this season’s for him.”

After an injury to Henderson on the opening series of the game ruled him out for the remainder of the contest, Williams became RB1. But when Williams needed a breather in the second quarter, Alford turned to the freshman with the game still in the balance.
“I just made sure to realize, all the practice and all the preparation led up to this point,” Hayden said after the game. “I practice against the best of the best in the country I feel like. So I felt like, if I practice against these guys, I could go against anyone. So I felt pretty good going into the game.”
This doesn’t mean there weren’t nerves. Playing in the fourth quarter of a blowout is one thing but coming in when the Rockets still could get back in the game is another. Fortunately, Hayden had a good leader beside him in the backfield.
“I definitely just gave him some early confidence going in there,” quarterback C.J. Stroud said of his advice to Hayden. “Just told him, 'Man, you've been playing his game since you've been six years old. It's the same game you've been playing. Just go out there, have fun.' I kind of forced him to take a deep breath when he was back in the backfield. He didn't start like rambling or nothing, but I just made him do that, just to relax because I think that definitely helps. And he kind of calmed down. I told him 'Bro, you hit it hard enough, you're gonna break one.' And so he broke a couple, which I'm really proud of.”
