Wells looks to prove he's best in U.S.

Garfield star to start in today's U.S. Army All-American Bowl

<!-- begin body-content -->The goal for Garfield running back Chris Wells this afternoon is to show the nation that he is the top high school running back in the country.

He'll have that opportunity when he participates in the prestigious U.S. Army All-American Bowl at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The game, which features the country's top high school players on the East and West squads, will be televised live on NBC at 1 p.m.

Wells will be the starting running back for the East, which is coached by Ted Ginn Sr. of Glenville. His son is Ohio State standout receiver and kick returner Ted Ginn Jr.

``From the first day of practices, I wanted to go out, play hard and show that I was really the No. 1 guy,'' Wells said during a telephone interview from San Antonio. ``I think I pretty much showed it this week.''

Observers in San Antonio agreed that Wells has been impressive. The 6-foot-2, 230-pound Wells, who also is a first-team Parade All-American, rushed for 2,134 yards and 27 touchdowns on 223 carries this past season. He rushed for 5,232 yards and 61 touchdowns in his stellar four-year career.

Buchtel coach Claude Brown recognizes the level at which Wells performs.
Wells rushed for 355 yards and four touchdowns in the regular-season finale against the Griffins, who defeated Garfield 42-28.

``I agree 100 percent that Chris is the best back in the country and I think it's an unfair assessment for those who don't think so,'' Brown said. ``Some people say he may have taken some plays off here and there during the season. But when you take as many hits as he did, it's going to take a toll.

Chris has a lot of God-given gifts that a lot of 17-year-olds don't have. He has great speed and power and he had a great career. He's a man-child.''

Brown, meanwhile, coached current Ohio State running back Antonio Pittman, who rushed for 136 yards and scored on a late 60-yard touchdown in the Buckeyes' 34-20 Fiesta Bowl win against Notre Dame. Wells said he talked to Ohio State coach Jim Tressel later that evening, after the game.

``I called Coach (Tressel) after the game to congratulate him,'' Wells said. ``He just told me about the game and how great it was to win. I can't wait to play for him. While I was watching the game, I wanted to be there with them.''

Also, Wells said he's looking forward to joining his friend Pittman in the Ohio State backfield next season.

``I can't wait to go down there (to Columbus) and learn everything I can from Tony (Pittman),'' Wells said. ``He's a great player and a great person.''
