<!-- begin body-content -->CANTON - It takes guts, courage and a little insanity for a coach to do what Jack Rose did Saturday night.

Instead of kicking an extra point to tie, the GlenOak coach decided to go for the game-winning 2-point conversion.

His fearless call paid off as GlenOak quarterback Mike Hartline ran in the game-winner from the 3-yard line to give GlenOak a 41-40 overtime win over Garfield.

The GlenOak crowd erupted in pure jubilation on their side of Fawcett Stadium. The Garfield side quietly left, heads hung low, crushed by a missed opportunity the Rams had slip from their grasp.

``I didn't know if we could get them stopped,'' Rose said of his reasoning behind attempting a two-point conversion. ``Their back was running pretty well. We scored pretty quick on them. I thought we might have them reeling.''

The back Rose is speaking of is Garfield's Chris Wells, who only seconds earlier scrambled for an 18-yard touchdown run to give the Rams a 40-33 lead in overtime. Wells, an Ohio State recruit, finished with 263 yards and five touchdowns on 25 carries, so it's no wonder Rose didn't want the ball back in his hands.

Rose's decision held even greater significance, since both teams lost their season openers last week and didn't want to fall to 0-2. Unfortunately for the Rams, who have another tough opponent next week in Green, that's where their record now stands.

``It was a big win for us,'' Rose said. ``We've got a young team and they're getting better every week. But to start the season 0-2, that's tough, especially in the league we're in.''

Hartline stole the show from Wells and Garfield kicker Adam Guilmette, who nailed a 40-yard field goal as time expired in regulation.

``A lot of credit has to go to my kicker,'' Garfield coach Bob Sax said. ``We wouldn't even have been in that position.''

But Hartline, a senior, came out poised and ready to lead the Golden Eagles to their first win of the season. He scrambled for a 12-yard run to set up the game-winning conversion. Before that, he led his team down the field to take a 33-30 lead with 1:32 remaining in regulation. He finished the night completing 15-of-21 passes for 155 yards and added another 103 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 15 carries.

He might have been the most shocked of all at his coach's call.
``I was a bit surprised, but at the same time, I knew I was going to give it my all like any other play,'' he said. ``I just ran as hard as I could to get it in the end zone.''

The Golden Eagles showed resiliency all game, battling back from a 17-6 halftime deficit. They responded by outscoring the Rams 27-16 to force overtime.

``I told the kids it's a character check at halftime,'' Rose said. ``We're going to find out what kind of football team we're going to have this year.''
None of his players showed more character than he did.

GlenOak vs. Garfield

At least three big-time Division I recruits were in action at Fawcett Stadium when Canton GlenOak hosted Akron Garfield. Chris Wells from Garfield, already headed to Ohio State, had a monster game with 25 carries for 263 yards and 5 touchdowns. Wells looked like a completely different player from the week before. Mike Hartline led GlenOak to the win with his arm and legs by passing for 155 yards and running for 105 more, including the game-winning 2-point conversion for a 41-40 OT victory.

Akron Garfield at Green

What, when, where: Nonleague game, 7 p.m., Green Memorial Stadium, Steese Road, Green, Ohio. Call 330-896-7544.

Records: Garfield 0-2, Green 2-0.

What to watch: If ever a team needed a victory it's Garfield. After opening with a lackluster loss to Archbishop Hoban, the Rams played tough Saturday but still lost to GlenOak, 41-40, in overtime. How the team reacts to that loss will be integral to this week and, possibly, the rest of the season. While the Rams still have the City Series championship to play for, their chances of making the playoffs for the second year in a row would be in jeopardy with another loss. Green is undefeated, but that is somewhat misleading. The two teams it beat could combine to win as few as six games.

No stats on Chris, but Garfield won big 34-7. I have to think that CW had a monster game.
I went to the game tonight. Here's what I saw....

-Wells is every bit of 6'2" and 230 he's listed at. I was standing right next to me and felt puny. He smiled at all of us OSU fans and even took time to shake hands with younger Buckeye fans.

-By our rough estimate, he finished with about 200ish and 3 TDs on probably close to 25 carries. For his scores, two that were around 50 yards, and then a 12 yarder towards the end. All 3 runs were "between the tackles." He just broke a few and then burned everyone. When he wanted, he was the fastest player on the field.

-Green stuffed the box all game long. I don't think I saw a play where they didn't have 8 or 9 in the box. They very clearly sold out to stop Wells as the passing game (especially deep) was open all game long. Garfield was content to run though (can't say I don't blame them), even though the pass was there.

-His OL is not very good. For him to put up numbers that he has in these past 2 weeks is amazing. He was getting hit in the backfield more often than not. Put him behind our OL next year and he'll be a very happy (and productive) camper.

-It was pretty obvious that he's still not 100% following the Hoban attacks. Chris seemed to be limping an awful lot and everytime he went down in a pile of 5 or 6 (that's how many it took to bring him down, usually), I was afraid he wouldn't get back up. But he did. Every time. Gingerly walked back to the huddle, took the snap, and ran for another 5-10 yard chunk. Tough kid. I'd love to see him play healthy.

I think that's a pretty good summary for now. We'll see tomorrow how close I was on the stats...

Rams' win a team effort

GREEN - On this particular night, the Garfield Rams, more specifically, quarterback Kyle Shaffer and wide receiver Justin Barnett, showed that their team isn't one dimensional.

The Rams feature talented senior running back Chris Wells, an Ohio State recruit. And in the first three weeks of the season, opposing defenses have geared their game plans toward containing Wells.

In Garfield's 31-7 win Friday night at Green Memorial Stadium, Wells finished with 194 yards on 20 carries and had touchdown runs of 48, 57 and 12 yards.

But Shaffer and Barnett also stepped up to provide big plays for Garfield (2-1.)

Shaffer completed 7-of-15 passes for 110 yards and a touchdown. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound senior showed poise in the pocket and completed several passes in third-and-long situations that helped sustain drives.

``Kyle made plays when we needed them and that was good to see,'' Garfield coach Bob Sax said. ``The last few weeks, he's done a nice job for us.''

Shaffer said he needed a game like this to take pressure off Wells.

``Teams are putting so many guys in the box to stop Chris that we need to be able to throw the ball,'' Shaffer said.

Barnett, meanwhile, finished with three catches for 74 yards (a 24.7 yards-per-catch average.) He caught a 34-yard touchdown pass from Shaffer with 3:23 left in the third quarter for a 17-0 Garfield lead.

Barnett was lined up on the left side of the line, ran a post pattern and got behind Green's defenders. Shaffer threw a perfect spiral to a wide-open Barnett in the right corner of the end zone.

``You see so many guys get that wide open and drop the ball,'' Barnett said. ``All I was thinking about was making sure I got both hands on the ball.''

Barnett also registered nine tackles from his safety position and recorded an interception.

``Justin is a great kid and he's a competitor,'' Sax said. ``My hat goes off to him and the way he played (tonight.)''

Wells said: ``These two guys came to play,'' referring to Shaffer and Barnett. ``They just went out there and made it happen.''

Garfield's defensive unit, led by linebacker Josh Suddeth and linemen Joe Radish, Dwayne Yates and Whitney Mercilus, played hard from start to finish and never allowed the Bulldogs to produce any big plays.

``Their defense played extremely well,'' said Green coach Elden McVicker.

``We didn't help things (offensively) because we had chances to move the ball and we made too many mistakes. Garfield is a good football team and they wanted it more than we did.''

Sax added: ``Our defense is young but the guys are making strides. We gave up 21 points to Hoban, 41 to GlenOak and (tonight) we almost pitch a shutout. I was really happy with the defense.''

And Sax had to be pleased with kicker/punter Adam Guilmette. The senior drilled a 33-yard field goal with plenty of distance to spare with 3:36 left in the second quarter for a 10-0 halftime lead.

Guilmette also had several nice punts and two kickoffs that sailed into the end zone for touchbacks.

``Adam is one of the best kickers around,'' Sax said. ``He's making field goals in the red zone and his kickoffs are either going in the end zone or down to the 2- or 3-yard line.''

Green scored its touchdown with 3:10 left in the game on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Shawn Riley to Joe McAleese.

ONN's High School football wrap-up this morning had both JJ and Jerry expressing concern that our numero uno RB recruit, most likely Mr. Football candidate in Ohio, is taking a beating in these early games.

Chris is getting much of his yardage on his ownsome, while hauling a gimpy leg.

Their advice (and my hope and that of many others):
Get healthy Chris, we would love to see what you could do with two good wheels under you!!

Go Bucks and Beat Texas!! :osu:
