Akron Garfield vs Walsh Jesuit

What, when, where: Nonleague game, 7 p.m., Conway Memorial Field, 4550 Wyoga Lake Road, Cuyahoga Falls. Call 330-929-4205.

Records: Both teams are 1-2.

What to watch: Both squads are coming off successful "must-win" situations, only to jump barefoot into the frying pan again. Garfield turned in its second straight impressive performance and beat Green, while the Warriors did a 180-degree turnaround from the previous week and knocked off a dangerous Buchtel team. With quarterback Kyle Shaffer completing 7 of 14 passes for 109 yards and a touchdown, and Chris Wells running for 194 yards and three scores on 20 carries, the Rams flashed their first signs of balance this season. Walsh Jesuit's defense accounted for one touchdown and held Buchtel to one score in the second half. This is the first meeting between the two since 1996 and the series is tied, 2-2. The Warriors won the last meeting, 17-7.

He finished up with around 23 carries for 205 yards. He had a touchdown run for 65 yards, and 5 yards. Garfield lost 21-13

When people say that Chris Wells is the entire team, that is probably an understatement. If he wasn't on their team, they would probably be lucky to finish 3-9

Warriors hold off Wells, Rams for victory

Saturday, September 17, 2005 Mike Peticca
Plain Dealer Reporter
The objectives for Walsh Jesuit were sim ple. Play a little keep-away and limit the damage.
"We needed to keep the ball away from Chris Wells as much as we could," Walsh coach Gerry Rardin said after the host Warriors defeated Garfield, 21-13.
Wells, an Ohio State recruit, rushed for 205 yards.
"We were able to eat some time off the clock. . . . I know he got a whole lot of yards, but I know we stopped him at crucial times, too."
Walsh (2-2), ranked 22nd in The Plain Dealer poll, ran 61 offensive plays in the nonleague game critical to both teams' playoff hopes. No. 24 Garfield (1-3) was limited to 50 plays.
"It was a game of missed opportunities for us," said Garfield coach Bob Sax.
"They stepped up on defense and shut us down when they needed to. They did a real good job of keeping us [our offense] off the field."
The Walsh offense was remarkably efficient during its three scoring drives.
The Warriors totaled 189 yards on the marches, and had positive yardage on all 26 plays.
Trey Bennett, who ran for 105 yards on 13 carries, scored the first two Walsh touchdowns on runs of 5 and 2 yards in the second quarter. In between, the 6-2, 230-pound Wells broke a tackle near the line of scrimmage and sprinted 67 yards down the right sideline for a touchdown.
Wells carried 25 times. He has 792 yards rushing.
The Warriors extended their lead to 21-7 early in the third quarter when quarterback Eric Hinkle found Connor Mackovjak open in the back of the end zone for a 5-yard touchdown pass. Adam Guilmette followed with his third extra point.
Wells' 5-yard touchdown scamper around right end closed the scoring with 11:54 left.
Bennett, a 6-0, 205-pound senior, helped protect the Walsh lead, though, when he broke several tackles on consecutive runs of 41 and 22 yards, putting the Warriors at the Garfield 4 with four minutes to go. Walsh then missed a field goal, but the Rams were unable to gain a first down on their final possession.
"I realized that to break something open, I had to keep driving and keep moving my feet," Bennett said.
Walsh tailback Mark Wooldridge ran for 101 yards on 21 carries.
The Warriors' Isaiah Shepard intercepted a Garfield pass at the Walsh goal line. Warriors' linebackers Dave Rella, John McGroarty and Dan Pucci, and lineman Rob Budny all made big plays to help stop Garfield drives.
The Walsh offense totaled 304 yards.

Last night I also watched the game on ONN and this was the first time I could see Wells in action for a complete game, here are my thoughts....

Wells is just simply to strong and fast for most of the teams he will face, the problem is, he has absolute no help from the rest of his team. Garfield has little to no pass offense which allows the defense to put 9 in the box and key on Wells.

He has tremendous vision along with a devasting stiff arm, not to mention his outstanding speed and quickness. He is going to be a great one.

Buckeye fans, do not worry about the tailback position for the next few years, this kid will make a huge impact next year for OSU.
