RB Chris "Beanie" Wells (All B1G, All-American)

Thursday observations

Arizona Cardinals update:

-- Many Cardinals fans continue to wonder why Tim Hightower is starting over Beanie Wells. I've always thought that it didn't matter much: Wells was going to get more carries anyway. I wonder, however, if Hightower's edge might be narrowing.

The advantage Hightower has had over Wells is that he catches the ball well and picks up the blitz. But Hightower has struggled in pass blocking at times this season and could be blamed for giving up three of the four sacks against the Saints two weeks ago. Is Beanie going to start this week in Seattle? I doubt it but if the game is close, he'll get around 20 carries.

Rosenhaus reels in Beanie Wells
Posted by Mike Florio on October 26, 2010

We've confirmed the various media reports that Cardinals running back Chris "Beanie" Wells has decided to change agents, hiring Drew Rosenhaus.

Wells, who was previously was represented by DeBartolo Sports, entered the league as a first-round pick of the Cardinals in 2009.

In April 2009, Liz Mullen of SportsBusiness Journal cited Wells' case as one of the problems with the NFLPA's "junior rule," which prevents contract agents from communicating with players until their third college football season has ended. This gives financial advisors and marketing agents power to secure underclassmen as clients -- and then to steer the players toward a contract agent, once the prohibition against contact has lifted.

Of course, there's no similar rule that applies at the NFL level. Which permits players to change agents at will.

Which Beanie Wells has done.

Beanie Wells named starting RB

Earlier in the week, coach Ken Whisenhunt said he wasn?t making any announcements about his running back depth chart. That changed Friday, when he announced ? not surprisingly ? that Beanie Wells will get his first start Sunday against Tampa Bay, replacing Tim Hightower.

Whisenhunt declined to detail the reasons why, but after Hightower lost his third crucial fumble of the season in Seattle last week, Whisenhunt had said Hightower?s playing time could be curtailed.

?Tim is still going to get carries and be involved in all aspects of the offense,? Whisenhunt said. ?He?s not going to just be a third-down back. ? But (Beanie starting) is the way we?re going to go.?

Beanie was already getting most of the carries, but with the struggles of rookie quarterback Max Hall, it is assumed the Cards will be leaning heavier on the running game. Wells has made no secret of his desire to get a heavy workload in games.

Beanie?s ascension to the starting job has been long anticipated since he was made the Cards? No. 1 draft pick in 2009. But he couldn?t get past Hightower, who still supplies the Cards with solid ability catching the ball and pass blocking (and has averaged 5.7 yards a carry this season as well).

Hightower is considered to be the better receiving back, something that I'm not going to argue against quite frankly. They were in a passing situation, DA simply made an ill advised throw but up until then, they were moving the ball just fine without Beanie.

3 minutes left in the game, Arizona down by 3 and Wells isn't even on the field to drive it down. They pass every down and get intercepted.

Serves AZ right to lose for passing with a few minutes left and control of the ball anyway. Anderson throws a pick and they give the game away.

Did you watch the game? Not Beanie's finest moments.. dropped on a ball on a third down early, was unaware he was supposed to be on the field during a fourth down play which ended up being rushed an failing because he was late getting back on the field... Not to mention his vision just isn't there right now.. He's missing holes and not looking like the same back we saw at OSU or last season.. I've been advocating for him to get in there and play more, but after today he quite frankly isn't playing well enough to make me feel he's any better than Hightower or Stephens-Howling
