RB Chris "Beanie" Wells (All B1G, All-American)

Grip shouldn't matter. The narrower it is the harder it is...

I don't believe that. I have noticed that somepeople do better if they grip narrower than wider and vice-versa. It is definatley the idea that it is working different muscles/parts of muscles.

Back on topic...Beanies time is a little disappointing as I was hoping for a high 4.4, but it is still better thn some scUM RB we know all too well.

Unofficial 40 time of 4.57
Moreno ran an unofficial 4.55.

<H2 class=running-backs>RUNNING BACKS
Name . . . . . . . . . Time
Peerman, Cedric. . .4.45
Johnson, Ian. . . . . 4.46
Sheets, Kory . . . . . 4.47
Brown, Andre . . . . . 4.49
Brown, Donald . . . . 4.51
Williams, Javarris . . 4.52
Goodson, Mike . . . . 4.54
Scott, Bernard . . . . 4.56
Coffee, Glen . . . . . 4.58
Lucky, Marlon . . . . 4.59
Wells, Beanie . . . . 4.59
Beanie's official time is listed as 4.59, but Moreno is not listed. Does this mean his official time is slower than 4.6?

I'm shocked. I should probably own up to the fact that I guaranteed he'd run a sub-4.45 at the combine. But I guess he's not the only one who ran slower than expected. Still has the Pro Day left to improve his 40.

Knowshon Moreno/RB/Georgia: Moreno separated himself from the field and now clearly ranks as the top back heading towards April's draft. He weighed a stout 217 pounds, completed 25 reps on the bench and ran solid 40 times in the mid-to-upper 4.5 second area. Moreno really stood out during the running back drill session where he displayed outstanding quickness, footwork and pass-catching hands.

Just hope Beanie uses all this doubt as motivation.

Narrowing your grip only makes your distance longer from start to finish. Widening your grip allows you to recruit more of your lat muscle, which is stronger then triceps alone. Bar placement and body positioning are also factors.

I don't see why anyone is disappointed in Beanie Wells. He is his own blend of talent. Size and agility with that speed should keep him over anyone else in that class. Maybe it didn't help Moreno though

I just watched the RB benchpress segment on NFL network. It amazes me how these 'professional' scouts don't just laugh their asses off at this. It's ridiculous. The guys doing the benchpress are all using a different grip (which works different muscles) and most of them aren't even locking out on the push-stroke. What a [censored]ing joke.

You want to know how to evaluate a guy? Watch his tape. If he passes the eyeball test, go for it.

Locking out would make it easier because it lets the muscles rest.

No.....Someone like Wells who already has what appears to be longer arms wouldn't benefit doing full lockouts for sheer numbers (reps). There is no "rest". Your triceps are fully elongated at the top,and are getting fatigued from holding weight, and frying your lockout strength. It's a lot easier to catapult weight 3/4 off your chest(using mostly chest/lat recruitment),then full range reps. That's like saying there is a rest period when squatting just because your at the top..You will fatigue if you stand there long enough with hundreds of lbs on your back. 25 is a good number. I'd be willing to bet Beanie's strength is his tree trunks he runs on.

Geez calm down! I love Beanie just as much as you guys do! And yes he is good i know. But just because he did it in college does not mean he can do it in the pros. You got to look at it that way! Beanie has heart and is a very good back! He did not do to hot in the combine tho. He had to do the long jump like 10 times because he kept falling. That shows his balance right there! It brought him down anyway. And just because the analyst are saying where he is ranked does not mean thats how its going to turn out! they have mark sanchez going first round like top 10 pick! thats crazy he is horrible.

With your title being "Powerlifter" you should know that the bench is just like the pushup. The wider your grip is, the more pressure and movement you are doing with your chest; the more narrow of a grip, than you are beginning to use more shoulder and triceps, taking pressure off of your chest. For most gym rats, it is much easier to position the grip more narrow because the triceps muscle is typically stronger. You'd be amazed to see how many plates (45lbs) you'd see on the bar if I had Beanie do a close grip bench press (common triceps body building exercise) than he would if I had him doing a standard or incline bench press.

Anyways, on the topic of Beanie vs. Moreno. I just don't see the big effing whoop with the high praise garnered around Moreno, I don't. Beanie is bigger, looks to be about the same strength, has proven himself in bigger games, his combine stats are just as great.
