RB Chris "Beanie" Wells (All B1G, All-American)

Wells ready to sprint into NFL
Ohio State, Garfield star anxious to compete, prove his health, speed

INDIANAPOLIS: Chris Wells has heard the whispers, the talk about his durability and toughness.

The Ohio State junior running back from Garfield High School hopes to begin silencing his doubters Sunday, when he will participate in all the drills at the NFL Scouting Combine.

''I want to prove to everybody I'm a competitor,'' Wells said. ''I can go out there, 235, and I can run with the little guys, I can run with the best of them.''

Wells, who said he measured 6-foot-11/2 and 235 pounds when he checked in, wouldn't predict his time in the 40-yard dash.

''Fast,'' he said.

But it could hold the key to how high he's selected in the first round of the April 25-26
draft.

ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. said a time in the 4.38-4.42 range might shoot Wells into the top 10 to 15. Kiper said with a 4.48-4.5 clocking, Wells could fall to the Philadelphia Eagles at No. 21.

''His speed will determine how far up he goes, especially the way he ran against DBs against LSU in the national championship game,'' Kiper said of the 2007 season. ''He could be faster than people think he is.

''There are some durability issues, how he played this year when he came back after he was hurt, he didn't run with the same toughness and determination.''

Which is exactly why it makes no sense that 5 hundredths of a second means the difference between top 10 and top 30. How many 40+ yards did he have in his career? Seemed like at least one every game. His speed should not be in question.

The combine is more maddening than recruiting.

Agree. I usually don't really care what the talking heads say, but this year it seems that they're being more ridiculous than usual.

Beanie's being interviewed right now on NFL network.

EDIT- That was short. Was asked about his nickname, what he'll run in the 40(he was reluctant to give a time but he was really being pressed and finally said something in the 4.4 range), and about the medical evaluation process. Nothing really interesting.

I liked what the scum guy had to say. Something along the lines of Beanie has owned us, a lot of people have!

Aside from pushing the fat nose tackle off you when he's trying to kill clock near the end of the game, I'm not sure I see what football skill the bench press translates to for a running back.

general strength would be my guess. That and comittment to the weight room and putting extra time in.

While putting up 22 reps won't help Beanie a ton, it certainly hurts the guy who can only put up 12.

I just watched the RB benchpress segment on NFL network. It amazes me how these 'professional' scouts don't just laugh their asses off at this. It's ridiculous. The guys doing the benchpress are all using a different grip (which works different muscles) and most of them aren't even locking out on the push-stroke. What a fucking joke.

You want to know how to evaluate a guy? Watch his tape. If he passes the eyeball test, go for it.

Grip shouldn't matter. The narrower it is the harder it is..The lockout has been a joke for many years, and probably always will continue to be.
