RB Chris "Beanie" Wells (All B1G, All-American)

Update from Mike & Mike in the morning (surprised this hasn't been posted yet). They just spoke live with Tressel. JT said right now he would still say "doubtful", and that it will be a gametime decision, but did go so far as to say that Beanie will either play "a little or not at all". Not sounding good...doesn't sound like there's much chance that he will see 20+ carries.

I still don't have any doubt in my mind Beanie will play. I think they will rest him today and part of tomorrow, then have him go through warmups. He will start, but the amount of play time is going to be based on HOW EFFECTIVE HE IS. Tressel has already said this.

I was thinking about that. A Heisman trophy candidate and especially the winner should be someone that a team absolutely needs to be as successful as they can. Dennis Dixon comes to mind...Oregon was on a rampage and the second Dixon went down, the team did a 180.
Here's the diffrence.. Oregon's offense was built around Dixon. We have many more weapons and a much more balanced attack.

I wouldn't be surprised if our offense takes on the form we were all hoping it would without Beanie in the lineup.

For example, with Beanie.. we run iso's and power's.. without beanie, we may be forced to get a little more creative.

Wishful thinking? Most likely

Not to clutter up Beanie's thread (more), but this is the crux of the game. If tOSU doesn't take chances on offense tomorrow, they lose the game. If the play-calling is aggressive, they win. IMO, it's that simple. I'd love to see Beanie play, but him taking the field is not going to decide this game...it's going to be the play-calling.

Bingo.

...Which is what it's really been all along - when he was a "go" and when he was called "doubtful". This drama is the result of Tressel being candid about Wells' status AT THE MOMENT, and the media interpreting that status as a prognosis. I think when Tressel has spoken so far, he has been talking about where things stand that day, not where he thinks they may stand on Saturday. They'll make that determination when that time comes. Meanwhile, we have people blowing this way out of proportion to get ratings and sell newspapers.

Wow, I guess I'm going to have to go back and watch the presser though those colored glasses. It may be a case of hearing what you expect to hear, but boy... I didn't get the (if the game were played on Thursday) he's doubtful.

I hope you're right.

Regarding needeing BW for this game: I believe that the team is more than one person. I believe that the team can with without his presence on the field. I believe that it may be harder to do it without him than with. I also believe that I'd love to see him play and have a Heisman winning performance. But finally, I believe that they have to do what is right. I completely trust JT and med staff to temper the young man's desire to play if it's going to be a problem going forward.

disagree, thats not the major key to the game...

Actually, if you read the Cols Dispatch this AM, you'll see JLB nailed this one:

Columbus Dispatch:

Tressel described Wells' status as doubtful yesterday before the Buckeyes left for Los Angeles. But after they arrived, an Ohio State representative told ESPN that Tressel meant Wells would have been doubtful only if the game had been yesterday. The team is "a little more optimistic" he could play Saturday, the representative said.

red zone

I think Beanie plays in the red zone... That is where tOSU always seems to struggle and settle for field goals. I think Pryor, Saine, Boom, and Mo Wells provide the rushing attack between the 20's and Beanie comes in as part their new ponyback set with Saine or the I on the goal line/red zone. Either way the Buckeyes will compete and play hard. I truly believe they can win, with or without Beanie because of defense, solid special teams, and solid QB play. I also think Pryor will finally have his chance to make some throws and be a difference maker. If he shows up and we can rattle Sanchez early I think OSU wins 24 - 21. That being said, if USC jumps out early I think Beanie could sit in preparation for the B10 season.

Go Bucks

Interesting thought.

So... the head games continue.

(Now someone correct me if I'm wrong or taking this out of context, heard this second hand)

Apparently Cowherd said on his show earlier, attributed to an "OSU inside source" something to the effect that:

"Tressel is saying that Beanie is hurt so they can have a built in excuse, so when they win the rest of their games they can make their claim to get in the title game because their only loss will have been on the raod without their best player."

Okay... yeah, so Herbstreit was his guest later on... ($5 says that's your inside info.)

Anyway, yeah, pretty funny stuff. Wonder if SC is going to "fall" for it. Pretty classic Herbstreit-- or whoever-- playing the reverse psychology game to light a fire up comment for Ohio State by saying they've conceded defeat while intimating the same to USC that the game will be a cake walk.

A bit clumsy, but, amusing behind the face value.
