I was watching the game last night with my wife. Now before I tell you this little "true" story, I must begin by saying that she isn't the most informed Buckeye football fan. I was happy that she wanted to watch with me but there were conditions. She said she couldn't just sit there for 4 hours without doing something while watching, so she pulled out the ironing board and ironed a few of my shirts. Life is good, my shirts are getting ironed, the game is going on and Beanie was running the ball. She asked who that was that just put his arm out and knocked those guys in the yellow pants down so easily when he runs. I told that's Beanie Wells and he's the best running back out there tonight. As he ran out of bounds and rolled past another defender, I felt good knowing he was a Buckeye. The game was still developing and his runs were spectacular. Later my wife noticed the score was changing and Beanie wasn't running as much. She asked me why the coach with the grey sweater vest wasn't running him as much as before. I said he is trying to pass and mix things up somewhat rather than use too much Beanie in the game plan. My response was clear but with a noticeable irritation in my voice. She asked what was wrong and before I could give her my carefully worded response she said: "Doesn't that coach with sweater vest want to win the Super Bowl and why didn't Beanie run the football more if he want to win." This caught me by surprise, and then she asked who Ohio State was playing? I said they're playing the LSU in the Super Bowl and the Buckeyes were trying to win a crystal football.
I sat there in awe as the game played out with her words about Beanie ringing in my head. Why didn't Beanie run the ball more? Why didn't the guy in the sweater vest run him more? I guess we'll never know if we could have won the Super Bowl of BCS Bowl games with three yards and a cloud of dust style running and what that crystal looks like in the trophy case in 2008.
