RB Chris "Beanie" Wells (All B1G, All-American)

I don't want to say that my kids are in any way the studs that Wells is but they have ankle pain every practice and every game. They tweak them on almost every other run. I checked it out on the web.

You just got to tape the crap out of their ankles and do exercises through the week to help out. calf raises, lunges, etc. It really isn't all that rare for running backs.

I get the distinct impression that if this were the NFL that Beanie would just "take the needle" and not miss a snap.

This is what would happen in my opinion also and there is nothing illegal about it as long as it is not a banned drug and a doctor says OK. It is amazing how they can treat injuries when there is millions of dollars at stake. The resources seem endless. If Beanie had these resources he wouldn't miss a beat.

You think Ohio State doesn't have those resources? Hell, we have more resources than some NFL teams...

I thought it went without saying, but I guess not...

The reason that "the needle" is used liberally on the NFL level and not in college is because the professional athlete is free to shoot himself full of painkiller and go play. The college athlete, at least at reputable institutions, is not treated like the piece of meat that the pro is. As a Detroit Lion, Chris Spielman played an entire season with a full-thickness, retracted tear of the pectoral. He taped the heck out of it and shot it up and went and played every Sunday. There is no freakin' way that Earle Bruce would have let him do that at OSU, and it's not because OSU doesn't play on Sundays.

The danger is that you might do damage to the area you've numbed and not realize it, thus subjecting it to much more damage than if you hadn't pumped it full of whatever. Since the doctor's have said that playing does not expose Beanie to a risk of exacerbating his injury, a new injury to that area would be an independent event (making it statistically very unlikely). This is an acceptable level of risk for the pro athlete. tOSU does not consider it an acceptable risk for Beanie, nor should they.

In addition to DBB's comments above, I would not be surprised if there were some sort of NCAA policy/rule against using painkillers for the sole purpose of enabling an athlete to play...

Watching the 2002 Holy Buckeye vs. Purdue replay on BTN last week, the crew mentioned that Clarett went into the locker room to get "shot up" before hopefully returning to the game. Whether that's true or not, I have no idea, but if you have that game on dvd, take a look.

One of my old college roomies who is now coaching with his HS team, used to speak of this "shot" in conversation, referring to the college level, as if he were selling drugs. It was like it was a big secret to him, which had me thinking it was done, but not openly. I always asked why the pros did it and not the college level, and he agreed that it was done, but not something we were supposed to know about.

Meh, he also claimed that the coaches saw enough in practice to warrant playing Belisari over Krenzel, and that I should leave the scrutiny to others that knew more than I did. Turned out well for Craig, eh?

If Beanie's ankle is not going to heal, then get him out there, albeit briefly this weekend. I just hope that it's not something that worsens as we go, or limits his effectiveness while we are nailing down the Big Ten once again.

Wells gets more rest:
Saine played more while No. 1 tailback Beanie Wells had what almost amounted to a week off. Tressel said leading up to the game that he wouldn't hold Wells out to rest his sore left ankle, but he finished with just 17 yards on four carries. He didn't play after halftime.
"I think he could have been in there more," Bollman said. "But I don't think [Wells] had any role in that decision."
So maybe he wanted more carries, but the coaches took advantage of the big lead, 35-0 at halftime, to play it safe. Then Tressel reiterated that the ankle, which forced Wells to the sideline for parts of the previous three games, is something he'll have to live with.
"You never like to see a guy who's in pain, and he's having to deal with some pain," Tressel said. "Having him in there toting it a whole bunch probably wasn't going to be necessary, but I don't like to see a kid in pain. But I appreciate the way he's enduring it, and he'll do great things for us."

Continued....

I don't think anyone is calling him out(aside from coach Bruce), so much as they're stressing how important he is to what the team wants to accomplish, and that they'll need him when it matters(the meat of our schedule coming up).

I'll pay a lot more attention when Wells comes out of a close game in the fourth quarter. Until that happens, I think it's unfair to Wells to levy criticism on him when he's only come out of games that are blowouts. Not to mention, we don't know if it's his decision or the coaches decision as to if and when he comes out.
