Ohio State running back Chris ?Beanie? Wells recently declared for the NFL Draft, which Hyde said benefits him.

?It opens up room for me to go up and compete for the starting job,? Hyde said. ?The coaches told me they want me to get in there and start running the ball as soon as possible.?

I think Hyde could well see some meaningful minutes this year. I think the coaches will want a very diverse attack this year, and he is one of the few big pounders who can play out of the I and just wear down D's on the roster. If he shows an ability to catch the ball out of the backfield and pick up the blitz, watch out. Come November, we'll need guys who can tote the rock when the weather makes it hard to make hay through the air, and Carlos fits the bill. His size and ball carrying skills will also allow tOSU to use him in short yardage from the FB position, something they haven't been able to do lately when the FB has been a converted TE with little ball carrying experience.

Football: Carlos Hyde: Everywhere to run but nowhere to Hyde
Margaret Stahl
Issue date: 2/23/09

Ohio State is known for its method of finding and signing recruits early. For one running back prospect, there was no question of whether he would play for Ohio State.

Carlos Hyde, a 6-foot-1, 230 pound running back from Naples High School in Naples, Fla., will join the Buckeyes for the 2009 season. He will join junior Brandon Saine, sophomore Daniel Herron and two other recruits: Jaamal Berry, from Miami Palmetto High School in Pinecrest Fla., and Jordan Hall from Jeannette High School in Jeannette, Pa.

Numerous recruit-tracking Web sites project these three to make the greatest immediate impacts among their recruiting class.

Kevin Noon, publisher of Buckeygrove.com, said these men will get to play a decent amount as true freshmen, especially with only two running backs on scholarship at this point.

Because of his size, Hyde maintains a deceptive fluidity on the field, often tricking the opposing team's defense with his speed and ability in moving the ball. Noon said he will be crucial in short-yardage settings, something that wasn't always an important factor in Chris Wells' technique.

"Carlos is pretty big for a running back," Noon said. "He's not quite as fast as 'Beanie,' but he brings a different type of running game to the field."

Yeah I agree... When I think of OSU (as far as specific players) I think Great linebackers, DB's, and BIG runningbacks. There always seems to be a place for the bigger backs at OSU, and I think Hyde will continue that trend this year.

I look for him to be a big part of the offense (especailly inside the 10)

Catching Up with Carlos Hyde

Hyde discusses with 11W if there was any competition for the Buckeyes in his recruitment, what position he will play at the next level, who he likes to compare himself to, and what fans can expect to see in the next few years that will put smiles on the faces of all across Buckeye Nation.....

Obviously Ohio State has a great tradition of hard running, strong backs. What’s your favorite part about being a power back?
I love trucking people that get in my way.

do you think theres a chance he could come in and play FB?, and possilby start there? or is he just gonnaa play RB?

I think Carlos's talents would be wasted if we put him at fullback. Guys like Mo Clarett, Brandon Joe, Mo Hall, and Beanie Wells were all bigger backs but they mostly toted the rock. Reasoning behind this was that they were very difficult to bring down because of their size. Will Carlos ever line up at FB? Yeah, there will prolly be a scheme or two for him to block for Herron or Berry, but he will primarily be featured as a Running Back.
