RB Carlos "El Guapo" Hyde (Official Thread)

I think Carlos's talents would be wasted if we put him at fullback. Guys like Mo Clarett, Brandon Joe, Mo Hall, and Beanie Wells were all bigger backs but they mostly toted the rock. Reasoning behind this was that they were very difficult to bring down because of their size. Will Carlos ever line up at FB? Yeah, there will prolly be a scheme or two for him to block for Herron or Berry, but he will primarily be featured as a Running Back.

Mo Hall? I'm assuming you were thinking of someone else but can't figure out who that might be.

He's not gonna play fullback! The coaches have said as much.

Besides, we have a Glenville kid by the name of Jermil Martin (redshirt) who relishes that particular role (check out the vid of him destroying peeps). :) hehe you don't see many fullbacks outrunning the entire defense. Pryor, Boom, Hyde & Berry..yep that backfield is going to be nasty in the next couple of years.

It seems like we almost have too many good incoming backs. I do not beleive Tressel is one to split to RB position 3-4 ways equally. I know boom and Saine saw time with Beanie back there, but lets be real when Beanie was at 100% those tiems were few and far between. I think Tressel will have 2 backs. Boom + ??? other than that i only see guys getting a rep or two a game. Nothing that will tremendously help the team out. Hyde might have a better chance latter being the bigger back, but im not sure we'll see him play this coming year much unless someone gets hurt.

Fair points, it is certainly not a terrible problem to have. :) In regards to the Beanie era, I think Chris just being super beastly had more to do with it than anything. Forget the other backs, at times it seemed like Wells alone was the Ohio State offense. (and to your point, we kind of saw the same with #13, if Tress has a sure fire stud..he's going to ride that horse all day..thus not leaving much room for the backups). I think for much of Beanie's feature years (07/08) his backups had the Clarett syndrome going on..where the starter is so good that for whatever reason (lack of carries, blocking, opposing D keying), they never had a chance. Boom's emergence in the 2nd half of the season was really the first time in a couple years that tOSU had a couple of legit threats at running back.

It will be interesting because I think this upcoming season is a little different than the feature years of Beanie & Clarett. I agree that Boom will be 'the guy' for tOSU. Yet, Herron is not as established as say a junior Pittman which allowed JT & Doc to limit Beanie's freshmen carries. I know we say this every single year about incoming players. But boy when you look at one the top big backs in the country along with the all around talents of Berry, and the vision and grinding style of Boom..well lets just say I hope JT can find a healthy balance with those weapons.

If we are all honest we really have no idea whether or not we have any "good" incoming backs. Mo Wells was a stud out of high school and he didn't really pan out. You can argue that he wasn't used correctly but he wasn't a "good" back for Ohio State. Same with Brandon Saine. Mr. Football in Ohio and he hasn't shown anything to speak of. Saine still has some time but I'm not holding my breath.

Berry was great in high school as were Hyde and Hall, but they haven't taken a practice snap yet. I have very high hopes for all three but we have to wait and see.

Of the three I think Hyde is the most game ready but can he pass block?

Better Know a Buckeye: Carlos Hyde by Vico @ ohd.com

Ohio State was one of the first programs to figure out that there?s something to this Carlos Hyde. Florida State was his first offer, but the Buckeyes followed suit at the end of February. Other offers eventually came from the likes of Clemson, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Louisville, USF, Pitt, NC State, Miami and our dearest friends in Gainesville. However, the Ohio State offer almost immediately vaulted the Buckeyes into the lead. After all, it was his dream offer. Knowledge of his back story is helpful in understanding why. Though residing in Naples, Florida, Carlos is originally from Cincinnati. He grew up a devoted Buckeye fan and remained one even in Florida. Further, his parents and most of his extended family remained in Cincinnati while he was in Florida. Carlos was sent to Naples by his parents in order to live with his grandmother and uncle. Though I don?t know what part of Cincinnati Carlos is originally from, there was fear in his parents that Carlos could get caught with some bad elements if he did not get a change of scenery. His parents recognized he had a talent for football and wanted him to cultivate it in a distraction-free environment with grandma. It doesn?t hurt that he was developing his game in the football-rich Sunshine State either.
