2008 Fall Athletes of the Year: Carlos Hyde, Naples, Broxson Award
By ADAM FISHER (Contact)
Thursday, December 25, 2008

NAPLES ? If a record-setting defense was the driving force to last year?s Class 3A championship, it was going to be an explosive offense that guided the Naples football team this season.

That was the thought heading into the season. The Golden Eagles didn?t have a single starter back from a defense that held opponents to 8.3 points a game in 2007. On the other side of the ball, Naples coach Bill Kramer had one of the most talented backfields he said he?s ever had.

"We felt like we had to put the team on our back and carry it into the playoffs," running back Carlos Hyde said. "It wasn?t pressure at all, just motivation. We had to get going. I didn?t want to let the team down."

Hyde?s 6-foot-1, 230-pound frame was more than sufficient enough to shoulder the load. Behind the senior running back, Naples went 11-2 and advanced to its third straight regional championship game and broke offensive records along the way.

The biggest reason the Eagles made it back to the regional finals is Hyde. He was nearly unstoppable down the stretch, finishing the year with 1,653 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns and another 166 yards and three receiving scores.

Hyde also is the Daily News Broxson Award winner as the area?s Football Player of the Year.

Though he said his junior year and the 3A championship trumped this past season, Hyde hopes his senior year gave him enough momentum to star next season at Ohio State. He grew up in Ohio before moving to Naples as a sophomore and returns in June hoping to be the starting running back next fall.

That wouldn?t surprise Kramer.

"He?s only going to get better at Ohio State," Kramer said. "God?s already blessed him with a lot of ability. He?s going to maximize that natural ability.

"I look forward to watching him play on Saturdays."

Naples running back Carlos Hyde is named The News-Press football offensive player of the year

Offensive player of the year: Carlos Hyde

The 6-foot-1, 235-pound Hyde punished opposing defenses this season while leading the Golden Eagles? ground attack. The senior running back rushed for 1,653 yards on 158 carries (10.5 yards per carry) and scored 16 touchdowns. He also caught 10 passes for 166 yards and three more scores. Hyde rushed for 277 yards and five touchdowns on 12 carries in a 61-23 win over Riverdale in a Region 3A-4 quarterfinal. He has verbally committed to attend Ohio State. Hyde is The News-Press All Area Offensive Player of the Year for Football.

Will he be an Owen Schmitt type of fullback, or another Beanie/Clarett style back, or something completely different?

Should Hyde emerge as a prodominant Fullback, I hope Tress kicks it old school and use him in the same way he did with Mo Hall. That guy was a truck that open up holes, kept Krenzel safe, and certainly was key to our victories.

Biggest fear for any bruiser in the Big Ten are injuries, so here is to an injury free career

I think Carlos is coming to Columbus to tote the rock, not to become a battering ram blocker.
I don'
t think Brandon Joe ever averaged 10.5 yards per carry against Florida level competition.

Maurice Wells did. Shhhhhhhhhh.

I think Carlos Hyde is a better back for our system. We like to pound it, pound it, and pound it. He looks like a stud.

Personally, this is one of the kids that I'm most excited to see coming into the program. I see him being exactly what we're looking for in terms of a kid built like a Mack truck running with the ball. Bookmark this if you want to call me out on it later, but I see 'Los doing many great things in S&G.

I won't be calling you out, because I've been thinking for quite a while that Hyde will fit in well here at Ohio State with his size.

I love the fact that Berry's in this class too, but I am very excited that Hyde is as well. I don't know what will ultimately happen, but if Hyde ends up better than Berry at Ohio State, I won't be shocked. That's taking nothing away from Berry, of course.

I envision a Pete Johnson/Archie Griffin combination with Hyde, Berry, Boom, Saine and Hall, I have been dipping into spirits tonight however. I think Hyde will have an outstanding career as a Buckeye. If tOSU goes with a smaller back, I think Hyde will play a big role as a short yardage, or goal line back, or tOSU could continue the Beanie, Clarrett, JWells, Eddie tradition of having a big back pounding the defense for yards. Even though he played "fullback" Hyde seems to have a different combination of skills than most tOSU fullbacks lately, in that he ran the ball more than most our recent helmet busting fullbacks, therefore, I think he will either slide down to tailback or be a fullback who touches the ball much more than recent tOSU fullbacks.
