NAPLES ? Carlos Hyde has handled the attention surrounding his play on the field as well as he has opposing defenses all season.
Now with the Naples football team advancing in the playoffs in search of another state championship, the senior fullback is leaving everything on the field.
In a backfield with the speedy Greg Pratt and the slippery Juno Prudhomm, Hyde continued his preferred method of trampling the other team. The Riverdale Raiders were the most recent case study ? to the tune of over 250 yards and five touchdowns. The season total was easily his most productive output of the season.
?I didn?t think that I was going to do that, but I did,? Hyde said. ?I had a lot of help from my offensive line and Greg, and it was like the O-line just opened hole after hole and I just went to them.?
Hyde?s performance was expected to play a role in Naples? game plan, but the numbers he posted were even a surprise to coach Bill Kramer.
?I don?t know if you ever expect that kind of performance, but I know that he is capable and I know that we have three that can be spectacular on any given night ? Greg went for over 150 but did a great job blocking,? the coach said. ?He has a ton of ability and he is going to have to keep playing this way now when it matters now. This is a one-week season and big players make big plays in big games, and we have had several guys ? we?re fortunate to have them, and Carlos is one of them.?
Riverdale, a team with a reputation of playing hard-nosed football on both sides of the line of scrimmage, couldn?t do much to slow down Hyde?s 230-pound frame.
This week, Hyde is turning his attention to Dunbar, which beat Lely 39-30 on Friday. Though Dunbar?s team athleticism may have been the deciding factor in the Tigers? win, they still allowed nearly 200 yards rushing, 174 of which to Trojans star Darion Hall.
Hyde expects to come away with similar results.
?I am just going to try and come hard and come off my blocks,? he said. ?My first goal was 1,000 yards, and I did that. Now I need another state ring.?
