RB Brandon "Zoom" Saine (official thread)

Yeah I have to agree MoW is the best blocker we have. I mean I feel like I'm trashing the kid or something though haha. Yes 300 yards is great but its just the way he runs ya know? It was like when MoC came in the games in 02' how wide open holes were and when Ross came in he just seemed to never have room.
Ehhh dangerous ground.

MoC had something that Troy had/has.. the "intangibles"

Look no further than the scUM game.. when MoC came in, the team became electric.. I don't know how much of that has to do with the O-line getting an extra push but I do agree as every other person will that MoC was a superior tailback with incredible vision.

With Saine, I thought he did a fine job and am looking foward to him toting the rock more this year.. I think he'll make a fine tailback. Is he a smash mouth runner? No. Hence he is "zoom" and the other is "boom" while Beanie is "manchild freak."

I do see Saine as more of a Reggie Bush type player, definately has the ability to run between the tackles, but has the agility to break a screen pass, or a route to the flat, for a big gain. What comes to mind is his reception in the BCSNCG and the nice catch on a high pass from Boeckman, stays in bounds and gets good YAC. It will be exciting seeing Pryor, Zoom, and Boom in the future. So many options, lots of talent.

Beanie is the feature back this year of course. Saine can run between the tackles, however like others, I see him playing a different role, and being a nice compliment to BWells downhill running style. If BWells does not stay for his Senior season, I feel Saine will move into the more featured back, unless he has a spectacular season staying outside and Boom proves himself running between tackles, again a very good 1-2 punch.

I have little doubt that Herron is a better all around runner as evidenced by his vision, lateral quickness, balance after contact, and leg drive. He will move the chains more consistently than Saine, I predict.

But Saine has something that can't be taught or isn't instinctual...he has God given speed that makes every one of his carries a legitimate threat to be a homerun. The pressure that places on a defense is enormous...and once Saine breaks a couple more long ones he will have the reputation as a homerun threat that must be spied by the D....and it will open up opportunities immediately.

So, I see more use of Saine while we still have Beanie....whose style seems to match Herron's more. And once Beanie is gone then you will see a true rotation of HErron & Saine.

what a great problem to have

I think the sky's the limit for Brandon. Hopefully he can avoid the injury bug for the rest of his career. He is not just a speed RB, IMO. It is an aspect of his game, but he is much more than that. He does pose a big problem for opponents when he moves to the slot or runs routes out of the backfield, and he may be used in that role extensively this year, but that is mostly because we have more than enough horses to handle the between the tackles role. In HS, he showed the ability to run up the middle with power, he was 210 lbs. coming in, IIRC. Granted, he was playing Piqua's schedule, but he could gain yards with 5 defenders hanging off him. Keeping your legs pumping with 900-1000 lbs. trying to tackle you isn't something that changes much between HS and college. Were he in a program that had no clear starter, he would be the first choice to carry the work load. At OSU we have a phenom poised to break out (Beanie); a seasoned veteran who, while not amazing by OSU standards, is a solid contributer and a good influence on the younger players (Mo); and a young stud who is built for pounding the ball up the gut (Herron). What is missing from that trio is the blazing speed that Brandon has naturally. He will surely get some iso and off tackle calls in any series he plays, and if the line gives him a big hole, look out, he'll be past the LBs before anyone knows what's going on. But he will be most effective this year by putting him in a position where the D is not sure who needs to cover him. If he plays more downs as a slot WR, it's not because of a shortcoming as a RB, it's because he brings a unique skill set to the backfield. After Beanie moves on (hopefully after 09), look for Saine to be more of a traditional back, while still getting looks at WR.

Saine's skills outside of his speed are being severely underrated here.. Saine had good vision and played excellent last year when he was in the game.

I'll continue to hold my judgement on Herron until he plays a down in a real college game... I don't judge a player, especially at RB, until I see how he does then.

Ohio State's Saine hopes to kick it into high gear
August 21, 2008
Jim Naveau

COLUMBUS - Ted Ginn Jr.'s last kickoff return at Ohio State ended in an ugly way when he was injured in an end zone celebration at the 2006 national championship game.

But OSU's kick runbacks last season were just as ugly in a different way. There was little to celebrate in the kickoff return department when the Buckeyes ranked No. 117 out of 119 NCAA Division I football teams.

It's a problem coach Jim Tressel promises to address this season. One way he might try to fix it is by putting sophomore tailback Brandon Saine in to receive kickoffs.

Saine was a state champion in the 100-meter dash and 400-meter dash at Piqua High School.

Is Saine up for the challenge? "Wherever the coaches put me, I'm willing to go."

Saine returned three kickoffs for 60 yards, with a long of 39 yards last season. His kickoff resume at Piqua was a little more impressive, though.

"I ran a couple back for touchdowns but then they started kicking away from me," he said. "We definitely need to bounce back from last year (on kickoff returns)."

I believe Tressel has said that Saine and Herron will be the #1 kick return team.

That's what I like to hear, but I figured someone like Flash would get a chance. That's for another thread, but I like Boom returing as well. I don't know about you'll but man I'm gettin' really pumped for the season. Kick off in just over a week.

:oh:

I would really like to see Saine back returing kicks this year. Anytime you can get a guy who can run like Saine you have to get the ball in his hands. And the more ways we get him involved the better.

Preview time. Here are a few Saine HS returns, the first 1:20 shows his speed very well.

The best Saine highlight from HS that I've seen (which, of course, I can't find now) was of him as an outside gunner on the kickoff team. He ran down the near sideline covering his lane, the returner hit a seam right down the middle and had a wide open field in front of him. Saine looped around to the middle and closed the 15-20 yard lead to make the tackle. I've never seen anything quite like it. Shows what a complete football player he is.
