RB Brandon "Zoom" Saine (official thread)

Very True! It's a great problem to have. Any I agree with "give Herron a shot", I just disagree with annointing him #2 on the depth chart yet. Either way, JT gets the big bucks to figure this stuff out for us. All I have to do is sit on my couch (or in the stands) and watch their hard work come to fruition.

Well I for one am probably the biggest "give Herron a shot" guy and I will say that I in no way think Herron is a more proven player. You're right, the only way to become proven is to play. So what, Saine got 300 yards? Sure he was injured and he was a freshman after all but I'm basing everything off of what I saw of their HS tapes. Not only did Herron display a more fluid running motion to me, but he also IMO faced stiffer competition.
Saine got 300 yards as a true frosh despite being the #3 back and missing several games due to injury. I'm not saying thats some extraordinary but I don't understand how you can use the fact that Saine played and Herron redshirted against Saine.

Listening to ESPiN radio here is Dayton, there was a Bucknuts update that was talking about various players changing position. They mention Terry to FB, Torrence to CB, and Saine to WR??? Has anyone confirmed this move or is there just speculation? Did anyone else hear this?

Before Saine had his surgery he was impressive. He tore up YSU and ran well against Washington, display power and speed in both games. Yeah, he was no MoC as a true frosh, but he was more than capable backup RB, and with another year's experience he can be a solid starting RB.

Doubtful, in his official interview on media day, he spent the entire time talking about working on timing the QB hand-off in the new formations. Besides, Tressel has talked about using him all over the field. Limiting him to just one position would not be the best use of his unique talents.

i wonder where he fits in under a likely pair and a spare scheme? the pair being two good similar style backs and the spare (change of pace) back. that was earle's credo and tressel has seemed to like to follow that lead.

i do know that tressel is going to field the guys that fe feels gives the team the best chance to win. maybe that means brandon in a reggie bush rb/tb/wingback/wr looks, or maybe it is growing into a robert smith or raymont harris type role. who knows, as a soph hes nothing more than a pup. as coop would say if dogs are going to bite theyll do it as pups. ive seen the pup bite, that leaves me excited for brandon's future.

This post is exactly why many feel Boom will surpass him on the depth chart at RUNNING BACK. Saine will be used in so many variations that they may not list him as #2 on the RB depth chart because of it. I do not think it's knock on Brandon but a testament to both Boom and Zoom. Zoom because he is so versatile and Boom because he makes the staff comfortable enough to use that versatility in Zoom.

wow coming into this topic has really shocked me. Seriously Brandon Saine was terrific his freshmen year. This kid is EASILY out best blocker at runningback, he is just the complete package. He does all the little things that go unnoticed in games that help the team out when he is in the game. He reminds me of a Brian Westbrook type of player.

saine is a terrific blocker, and you're right, he does all the little things that you need to do to be a great player. with that said, i think it's fair to say that after his injury he was never quite right, and seemed to lose some of his explosiveness. i'm sure he'll be back to his normal self this year, but honestly i don't seem him ever being our every down back. he's got the ability to be a huge huge matchup nightmare for safeties and LB's, but i don't know that he's going to be the in between the tackles dude a lot of people hoped he'd be

Yeah I have to agree MoW is the best blocker we have. I mean I feel like I'm trashing the kid or something though haha. Yes 300 yards is great but its just the way he runs ya know? It was like when MoC came in the games in 02' how wide open holes were and when Ross came in he just seemed to never have room. Well last year it seemed like the same when Beanie came out and Saine came in.

I agree 100%. I was excited after watchin that YSU game but then he did have trouble against Akron (despite the recieving TD), and then tore up Washington the game after. This year with him fully healthy and ready to go It'll be interesting to see how he does. Especially given how many players we have that need to touch the ball.
