RB Brandon "Zoom" Saine (official thread)

Saine out of the backfield as a receiver = matchup nightmare. He went for the long wheel route against LSU in the title game and subsequently saw lots of attention thereafter when he entered the game. I would say we'll see lots more of that and some additional routes with carries thrown in there, quite possibly on the reverse or a "student body" type of sweep.

I can also see him on a sweep or reverse. How about a double reverse with Small? The possiblities are staggering.

What impact will a 100% healthy Zoom have along with a 100% healthy Beanie? I can't wait to see what they can do this year. I am pumped already and it's only April.

We're going to the spring game but I doubt if we'll see anything too unusual. We should keep a few of these plays for USC, Illinois, and Michigan.

Did you even watch any of the games last year? Seriously.

Agree. I dont have time to check out the stats, so Ill just say that MoW had his most productive year by far (seemed like it). Although Saine was a nice change of pace back to Beanie, he trailed off after getting a little banged up in the middle of the year. MoW also brings another aspect that is very diffucult to have as a freshman......Pass Pro. While I beleive that Zoom should get more touches this year, I wasnt nearly as disappointed in MoW as I was in 06.

Edit: 2006: MoW- 46 attempts for 171 yards, and a 3.7 yard average, 1 TD
2007: MoW- 103 attempts for 367 yards for a 3.56 yard average, 3 TD's

So I guess I as wrong, but it did seem to me that he was running harder, and Im man enough to admit it!! :)

Saine missed like four games with a torn meniscus.

His 3.6 YPC and penchant for getting stopped for little gain says otherwise to me.

Mo may have been the #2 tailback last year, but I expect him to get passed up by Boom and Saine this year.

Not "may", but "was". Even when Saine was healthy, Mo Wells was the first to relieve Beanie. His relatively low YPC was due more to the situations he played and poor blocking than to his ability. I don't know how many times he took a handoff with 2-3 defenders aleady in the backfield. By the way, Saine missed two games due to injury (Northwestern, Purdue), not four. Mo Wells had four games with 13+ carries while Saine had one game of double-digit carries (10 vs. YSU).

If you think Mo will get passed up as #2, you haven't been watching Tressel-coached teams long. As a senior, he'll have to fall apart to get jumped on the depth chart. Saine will get his chances for sure, but he won't be #2 (or #1 if Beanie bails) until 2009.

If he continues to put up a 3.6 YPC while Saine (hypothetically) averages 5 or so in his relief work he may get passed up on the depth chart.

Tress loves his seniors as much as anyone this side of Happy Valley, but his first priority is winning and if that comes with demoting a senior and promoting a sophomore, he would do it.

So, you're making the prediction that, unless there is an unexpected meltdown, the sophomore player will not pass the senior player on the depth chart? Not even by, say, the YSU game?

Mow was used poorly. I think that Tressel played him because we needed steady relief for Beanie and Saine was in injured mid way which kept him from taking over.

Tressel is never going to bench him but I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Saine get the second most touches while not necessarily moving to #2 on the depth chart. Then I would guess we see an equal amount for Wells and Herron.

Of course if we do develop schemes for Saine then Wells will probably become more effective. It is really tiring watching the little guy try to take it up the middle. Not to fault him, but it just isn't his game.

First of all, Saine didn't average 5 ypc, but instead 4.45 ypc. And take away that oops-execuse-me-for-bouncing-it-outside-on-the-last-play-of-the-game 37-yard TD run at Washington, his average drops to 3.90 ypc. If Mo gets decent blocking, he won't be averaging 3.56 ypc. By the way, Mo had 43 more carries than Saine did last year.

That's what I'm saying. Maybe by the season's end Mo and Saine will be 2A and 2B, but JT won't demote Mo unless Mo goes to crap...

Agreed. Plus JT is loyal to seniors and heres a guy who coulda left but stayed to be a Buckeye.

However, not necessarily demoting Mo.. I can see JT promoting Saine, if Saine deserves it.

I didn't say he did, I was talking about if next year Mo keeps up his average from last year and Saine improves his, don't you think JT would promote Saine?
