Third-string tailback Brandon Saine was Ohio State's leading rusher and receiver last week.

The pass sailed downfield, straight for 10-year-old Brandon Saine, who was wide open near the goal line. It was Saine's first organized football game, and it looked like an easy touchdown for the 49ers of the Piqua pee-wee league.

I'd like to see him start beating guys to the corner more. He starts outside and instead of racing the guy to the corner he's been turning it up and trying to run the guy over. I love the North-South running but once in awhile take that guy outside and beat him around the corner. You don't have to take a hit every play young fella!

If he learns a stiff arm ala Beanie, its all over but the shouting.

Don't get me wrong, I'm very excited about the rest of the season, but those two will have to be one of the most talented running back duos next season (and throw in Mo Wells, and we'll have one hell of a stable of running backs next year).

Saine doesn't just catch, he plucks

COLUMBUS ? Ohio State fans may be taken aback by Brandon Saine's exploits as a receiver, but OSU head coach Jim Tressel knew the freshman tailback was blessed with a set of margarine-soft hands during the recruiting process.

Saine, who had five catches for 76 yards against Kent State last week, was a running and receiving threat while leading Piqua to a state title and winning the Ohio Mr. Football award. He rushed for 1,895 yards and hauled in 30 passes for another 412 yards.

He put on a show for his future coaches while taking part in a passing camp at OSU in the summer before his senior year. Unlike most high school backs, Saine could catch the ball without needing to cradle it against his body.

"I saw him in the passing tournament, and he's an excellent receiver," Tressel said. "(He's got a) great ability to reach out with his hands. A lot of guys can catch the ball, not many guys can pluck the ball."
