RB Brandon "Zoom" Saine (official thread)

Transcript From Coach Tressel Weekly Press Conference - Ohio State Buckeyes Official Athletics Site - OhioStateBuckeyes.com

REPORTER: How's Brandon Saine feeling, Coach?

COACH TRESSEL
: I mentioned to Paul Keels, is he here, or is he celebrating his induction into the Ohio Sportscaster's Hall of Fame? He's working? I mentioned to Paul yesterday that Brandon probably wouldn't go. You know what, I'm not sure that's true. The medical report today came back that he actually did full speed land running after you begin your rehab in the water, and he did that last week, all of a sudden yesterday he was on land running full speed, which is pretty fast. So I think you would call him questionable right now because it will be the doctors that will, trainers will make that decision. But I was prepared, as I told Paul, to say he was out. I'm not sure that's true.

now there's tresselspeak for you.

That is actually the abridged version of Tressel's real quote. The full quote about Brandon's status was seven pages long and was original spoken in Latin. Tressel often uses latin to make sure he makes his point as clearly as possible.

Gotta love the Tress! I just hope that Brandon is completely healthy when he comes back. I trust the coaches to make the best decision.

Ohio State running back Saine's status not immediately clear

Wednesday, October 03, 2007 Doug Lesmerises

Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus -- Last week, coach Jim Tressel said freshman running back Brandon Saine had a 50 percent chance of playing against Purdue on Saturday. By Monday, Tressel thought that had dropped to zero percent. By Tuesday, he was confused.
"The medical report came back that he actually did full speed land running," Tressel said Tuesday. "So I think you would call him questionable right now because it will be the doctors [and] trainers who will make that decision. But I was prepared to say he was out. I'm not sure that's true."
Saine gained 153 yards, scored two touchdowns and averaged 5.5 yards per carry in Ohio State's first three games before requiring arthroscopic knee surgery that sidelined him against Northwestern and Minnesota.

He doesn't have to play very many plays to make a difference.
A couple of swing passes and draw plays, and he breaks one for 30 yards or so, and he would have been effective.
I can't see them letting him return kicks yet until he's had more practice time.

Hell, he's already had an impact by making their defensive coaches prepare for for more possibilities. If he plays its gravy, you can also suit him up and run a couple of well designed plays with him as the decoy.

Great psychological chip to play here and of course JT isn't going to miss a chance to do just that.

I really don't see Brandon getting many touches this week even if he is healthy. Yes, maybe a few swing passes or the Shot Ginn formation but the way Mo Wells ran last week and Beanie is well, Beanie, hopefully there wont be much need to get Brandon out there. I want Beanie to get 30 carries this week and Mo to follow that up with 12-15. The longer we keep Purdue's offense off the field the better.

Back from surgery, Saine is practicing

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Twelve days after having arthroscopic knee surgery, Ohio State running back Brandon Saine practiced at full speed yesterday and looked good, quarterbacks coach Joe Daniels said.

"He got a lot of work," Daniels said, adding that he didn't know whether Saine will play Saturday at Purdue. "I guess it will be a matter of does he get any swelling (today). That will be a big test, but he looked good to me."

Saine, a freshman from Piqua, was just beginning to make a big impression when he had surgery Sept. 21 to repair torn cartilage. In three games, Saine rushed for 153 yards and two touchdowns and also caught a TD pass.

He seemed to be emerging as the top backup to starter Chris "Beanie" Wells. In his absence, Maurice Wells has filled that role.

Saine has missed two games, but that might be it -- reminiscent of former OSU safety Donte Whitner, who had a knee scoped on a Monday in November 2004, missed one game, then played against Michigan 12 days later.
"It's totally amazing," Daniels said. "Modern medicine is unbelievable."
