Twelve days after having arthroscopic knee surgery, Ohio State running back Brandon Saine practiced at full speed yesterday and looked good, quarterbacks coach Joe Daniels said.
"He got a lot of work," Daniels said, adding that he didn't know whether Saine will play Saturday at Purdue. "I guess it will be a matter of does he get any swelling (today). That will be a big test, but he looked good to me."
Saine, a freshman from Piqua, was just beginning to make a big impression when he had surgery Sept. 21 to repair torn cartilage. In three games, Saine rushed for 153 yards and two touchdowns and also caught a TD pass.
He seemed to be emerging as the top backup to starter Chris "Beanie" Wells. In his absence, Maurice Wells has filled that role.
Saine has missed two games, but that might be it -- reminiscent of former OSU safety Donte Whitner, who had a knee scoped on a Monday in November 2004, missed one game, then played against Michigan 12 days later.
"It's totally amazing," Daniels said. "Modern medicine is unbelievable."
