RB Brandon "Zoom" Saine (official thread)

Actually I thought he did stop on that TD run... when he hit the line and just started to pop out.. it was almost like he was thinking "Coach doesn't want to run up the score... don't go anywhere... but then he decided, 'well, I'll just run over here until they knock me out of bounds'... but then nobody did, so he kept hearin' .. 'run Forrest run' .. " ... and that's all I have to say about that

Our kick returns have been pretty unspectacular. Any reason not to put Saine back there?
Coach Hazell was asked about this on 1460 this past week during the Jim Tressel call-in show. Mentioned two things:

1. The reverse to Saine on the opening kick-off of the Akron game was the kids' idea. They went to Tressel during practice that week and asked for it, and JT gave the OK.

2. Saine hasn't worked enough on the KR units (or at WR) to be out there full time. Coach Hazell laughingly said that he has been begging for the 1-on-1 time, but Doc won't give Saine up yet.

I believe on the Akron return Saine was one of the up backs on the line ahead of the two returners on the formation, so I would take that to mean the coaching staff just isn't comfortable with him fielding returns yet. He'll certainly work his way in there, but you know JT and the staff won't give him up to Coach Hazell until he masters all his protections, pass blocking, etc. He's got to learn to be a Big 10 RB before he gets a shot at anything else.

I don't think TGII got into the return game until he made his splash in the losing effort against Wisconsin in '04. That was the fifth game of the season. So, assuming Saine makes the same progression with his reps that TGII did, maybe he'll be ready to enter the return units in about two weeks ...

... on the fast turf in the baggy dome at Minnesota, where TGII returned a KO for a TD on our last trip. :wink2:

I'm beginning to think that Brandon has a shot at being an all-time great at tOSU.
He is a much more powerful runner than I expected and obviously super fast.
I would think the staff is giving him some quick-cut and weight-shift exercises. If he gets a little bit better at making cuts, look out.

Considering how few touches he has gotten, and how many times he's scored, it would seem we need to give him more touches.....somewhere? :tongue2:
KR would give him more touches.
I remember wehn we said that about Teddy, after the michigan game in '04 he had like 40 touches with 8 scores, its good to have the young guys producing

My take:

I have been very impressed with Saine so far - and obviously he's doinng great in practices to be getting so much PT.

One criticism from Sat.'s game, though. He needs to realize that (on third down especially) you've GOT to lower your pads and go north - south with the ball once you've found your crease. There were two times, back to back in the fourth quarter, where he could have easily gotten the first down and he didn't because he came up to the defenders and stopped and started dancing around. Once we ended up getting it anyway and the other time we got a GREAT spot to give it to us. In between those, I think, Mo Wells exploded straight up the field when he saw a crease and got a first down. (You might remember that next-to-last drive when we ran the SAME draw play 3 times in a row on third and long, and it worked every time.)

On the final play, he looked a little bit hesitant going outside because he knew JT would tear him a new one if he went OB and stopped the clock. But once he got the corner he just took off. VERY impressive run, there.

Bottom line: Brandon will definitely be a stud

That's fairly atypical for brandon, who is a predominantly N-S runner.

The first 3rd down play I would agree with you. He tried to bounce it outside for an extra 5 yards on the play, but by the time he completed his juke, the defense had swarmed to him. He could get away with that at the HS level.

The second one I saw differently. When he cut outside, he was 7 yards from the 3rd down line, with a LB filling the inside lane and a safety running up that lane as well (off screen before the cut). If Dane maintains his block, and doesn't get shoved backwards 2-3 yds as Brandon cuts outside, then Saine may beat the safety to the marker. Instead Dane ends up standing up Brandon, the defenders pile on, and his extra 1.5 yd push is still 1.5 yd from the marker.

I love what I've seen so far this season, but it seems like Brandon is still adjusting to the college game...A couple of times I've seen him trying to juke someone when he could have easily just blown by them with his speed. I think he's giving the opposition too much respect, once he figures out he can run past, as well as run through tacklers, and that the two are not mutually exclusive he's going to break even more short and medium plays for TDs.

I agree that Saine would be nice back there once he gets some experience fielding kicks, but I also imagine they will improve greatly with the re-addition of Ray Small to the return unit.
