RB Brandon "Zoom" Saine (official thread)

I said earlier that Beanie and Brandon ("Killer Bs?") could could rival Auburn's vaunted combo of Ronnie Brown and Carnell "Cadillac" Williams. Well, I'm changing my prediction to they'll be better. Granted they're a year apart eligibility-wise whilst Brown and Wiiliams were the in the same academic class IIRC, but still I'm betting they'll be one of the best RB tandems in recent memory...

Don't know if they'll rival Bush/White.

We have a more conservative style of offense. It's just not Tressel's style to use Saine the way Bush was used at USC. He could change, but after watching him coach these past seasons, I don't see it happening.
So, don't get too excited about how Saine may or may not be used.
Tress loves the kicking game.
That's where Saine will likely make the most impact this year.

I'm guessing Beanie won't be here long enough to pass Pete Johnsons record, but 40 TD's by the time he leaves isnt out of the question if he plays next year also.

Brandon would have to get enough touches on offense to try and compete with Bush's stats and I don't see that, at least not this season. Mo Wells is going to be a special kind change of pace back this season and Brandon's touches will be limited because of that.

Hi, were you in a coma last year? I think Tressel has shown plenty of versatility in his playcalling. Whether it's smashmouth I-formation or spread 'em out 4-wide, we've run it. With Ted Ginn we occasionally ran reverses and draws. What would prevent us from doing that with Saine?

White is SC's all time TD leader.

Which means he's also the all time Pac-10 leader too.

Correct. 52 touchdowns. Unreal.

Sorry off topic but......

Pete Johnson was the Buckeyes? starting fullback for three years, leading the way for tailback Archie Griffin in 1974 and 1975 and for Ron Springs and Jeff Logan in 1976. But the 6-1, 247-pound Johnson was much more than a just a blocking back. He also was proficient at lugging the pigskin, rushing for 2,308 yards and a school-record 58 touchdowns during his career. To say ?Big Pete? had a nose for the goal line would be an understatement. He led the nation in scoring as a junior, tallying a school and Big Ten record 26 touchdowns. He also rushed for 1,059 yards and converted 34 of 44 third-down tries. Johnson set a school record that year with five TDs against North Carolina. In 1976, playing almost the entire season with two sprained ankles, Johnson still rushed for 724 yards and 19 touchdowns. His 156 points in 1975 and 348 career points are still school records.

That combination of Johnson and Griffin is by far the standard here as well as could be anywhere. The fullback gets 58 career TD's and the tailback gets, ho hum, 2 Heisman trophies.

Beanie would definitely have to stay here to reach either of those lofty goals and Brandon's contributions this year and maybe next will be mostly special teams. Now he could possibly break Ted Ginns return record and then become the superstar RB that we all hope will happen. In that case the combination of the two could exceed some of our most historic duos. I'd love to see it happen but thats reaching for the stars. If they both were to actually be here until graduation....goodness!

Nice combination to have. I'm talking more about the recent combinations though, but still a nice combo. As far as Saine breaking Ginn's record, shouldn't we wait until he's at least returned a kick before saying that kind of stuff?

Maybe, but the potential is there. The ball moving back to the 30 will allow him that much more opportunity. The punt return game is where we will have to see if he can do it. He'll probably end up with more KO return TD's than Teddy had but not sure on the punts. And yes, I have seen Brandon play in person living in Dayton for the past 5 years until January, so I do think he can break the record if given enough opportunity.
