Pittman solid in debut for Saints
Monday, August 6, 2007 7:56 AM
Former Ohio State running back and NFL rookie Antonio Pittman led the New Orleans Saints in rushing last night with 20 yards on seven carries during a 20-7 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Hall of Fame game in Canton.
Pittman logged the most carries for the Saints and had a long gain of 8 yards. He was the workhorse on the Saints' only scoring drive, which began at the start of the second half.
On second-and-10, Pittman ran left and gained 8 yards before being knocked out of bounds. He picked up a yard on the next play and then another yard on fourth-and-one from the New Orleans 37-yard line.
Pittman's 2-yard run to the Steelers 1 set up a touchdown pass from Jason Fife to Keven Dudley. In all, Pittman had six carries for 19 yards on the march.
PITTMAN STRUTS STUFF
Rookie running back Antonio Pittman, a native of nearby Akron and an Ohio State product, made his NFL preseason debut in front of many family, friends and fans. His first carry, in the third quarter, was an 8-yard run during which he broke a tackle.
"It felt real good to get out there, especially since this is basically my hometown," Pittman said. "I waited a long time to get in, and I was glad to finally get the opportunity and I tried to make the most of it."
Pittman carried seven times for 20 yards and he also picked up a blitzing linebacker when Jason Fife passed to fullback Kevin Dudley for the Saints' only touchdown.
"Blocking for your quarterback is even more important than running with the ball at this level," Pittman said. "You've got to protect that guy." ...
Starting center Jeff Faine suffered a strained calf muscle in the first quarter and limped off the field. Afterward, he said he could not have returned to play, even in the regular season.
"But I don't think it's anything serious," Feine said. "It's nothing that will keep me out for very long."
Saints bright spots?
Rookie running back Antonio Pittman, the fourth-round choice out of Ohio State, ran the ball well when he entered the game to begin the second half. Pittman isn't as big as McAllister or as fast as Reggie Bush, but he runs hard, breaks tackles and has much potential. You could see why the Saints traded up to get him.
Pittman content to play second fiddle

An exhibition game against the Cincinnati Bengals tonight might be one of the few opportunities that former Ohio State running back Antonio Pittman has for extended playing time this season, but he is fine with his situation.
He said the adjustment from college to the pros has been smooth.
"It wasn't too much of a hard adjustment coming from Ohio State," Pittman said. "Those coaches prepared me very well for whatever was ahead of me."
Former Ohio State standout Antonio Pittman scored a 1-yard touchdown for New Orleans on the first play of the fourth quarter to increase the Saints' lead to 24-12. Pittman gained 17 yards on six carries.
Rookie fourth-round draft choice Antonio Pittman, who played college football in nearby Columbus, Ohio, for Ohio State, scored a touchdown with a 1-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter.
Pittman, hoping to earn a roster spot at the crowded tailback position, ran six times for 17 yards. Pittman currently is behind Deuce McAllister, Reggie Bush and Aaron Stecker in the tailback rotation and fighting Jamaal Branch and Pierre Thomas for a roster spot.
