QB1 Will Howard (Official Thread)

Ryan Day Says He Saw More “Zip” and “Accuracy” from Buckeye Quarterback Will Howard in First Day of Fall Camp

"I thought there was more zip on the ball, and I thought there was more accuracy today," Day said. "For day one, I did notice that. Again, day one, what are you going to do on day one? But I thought the ball came out with more pace. I thought he had more discernment, and I thought there were some accurate throws up there."

Will Howard Says He Doesn't Need to Be “Superhuman” for Ohio State, Improving Command of Offense and Throwing Attributes

When you have a .50-caliber machine gun at your disposal against your opponent’s peashooter, there’s no need to be the world’s greatest marksman. Just use the weapons at your disposal to their natural advantage.

That’s what it feels like with Will Howard transferring from Kansas State to Ohio State and getting surrounded by Emeka Egbuka, Jeremiah Smith, Carnell Tate and Brandon Inniss at wide receiver with TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins at running back. And the quarterback recognizes that fact.

“The one thing I would say is that I don't feel like I have to be a hero here,” Howard said on Tuesday. “And I feel like I have the guys around me to where I just need to facilitate and just get them the ball and make good decisions. And at the end of the day, I don't have to go out there and do anything superhuman, you know. I just have to be myself and trust the guys around me.”

"We know how fast Will is, so it's not like if he runs it's a 6-yard gain. If he takes off, it could be a 60-yard gain."– Chip Kelly on Will Howard's rushing ability

THE MOST IMPORTANT PLAYER? On Wednesday, Bill Connelly of ESPN ranked the 25 most important players in the 2024 College Football Playoff race. Who was the No. 1 player on Connelly’s list?

Will Howard.
On one hand, the job of Ohio State starting quarterback is one of the easiest in the sport. You're going to be throwing to a countless array of five-star receivers, and in most years, you're going to be handing the game to any number of dominant running backs. You're going to score loads of points, and you're probably going to win at least 11 games. (The last full season that didn't produce at least 11 Buckeye wins: 2011.)
On the other hand, the bar is so high that Mondo Duplantis couldn't clear it in the pole vault. Any loss is a catastrophe. A loss to Michigan is apocalyptic. Last year's starter, Kyle McCord, completed 66% of his passes, averaged nearly 14 yards per completion, threw four touchdowns for every interception and finished the season seventh in Total QBR. But he short-armed a couple of throws in a loss to Michigan and was therefore labeled an epic failure before transferring to Syracuse.
Will Howard ranked 23rd in Total QBR last season. He obviously wasn't throwing to Ohio State's receivers, but K-State's skill corps wasn't exactly chopped liver, and he finished the season with a lower completion rate (61% vs. McCord's 66%), fewer yards per completion (12.1 vs. 13.8), a higher interception rate (2.8% vs. 1.7%) and a lower success rate (47% vs. 49%). He's better in the run game, and he could end up forming a devastating connection with Emeka Egbuka and company. But there's no guarantee that he ends up better than McCord, and if he doesn't, Ohio State might not reach the promised land. Even with a pretty easy job, he is the most important player in the country in 2024.
Two more Buckeyes, Carnell Tate and Jeremiah Smith, checked in at No. 11.

Quinshon Judkins also checked in at No. 18.

Speaking of Howard and Smith...

:slappy: "I think Howard is the vanilla Cam Newton," Lord please don't let his closet resemble that.

I think the taller, faster JT Barrett is the best comp.

No one would be mad about having JT Barrett surrounded by this offensive skill talent - I would think.

It’s just interesting because Birm has said a couple times that Will Howard seems to have legit ark talent but for some reason it seems to not get much attention. I’m paraphrasing but I specifically remember him praising his throwing ability; JT didn’t stand out on that front too much.

I hope a taller, faster JTB isn't what we get and I don't expect to. JT was an all-timer, but was a liability as a passer and we only hit that next level with Day's offense with Haskins, followed by Fields and Stroud. I'd go with the aspirational characterization of Fields, maybe not as good a runner, but a better passer. That puts us in the final game.

Shiiiittt. Joseph Thomas Barrett was 4-0 against tcun as a starter. Broke his leg in one of those efforts and won an OT clash on his back. We don't need a superstar this year, those are the youngsters on the bench and in the classes coming next. Give me a Krenzel/Barrett mashup this year and add to that case at The Woody!

I think Will Howard is JT Barrett + …..I give him the plus because he’s got more size which will allow him to throw over the LOS, and prevent a lot of the knock downs at line of scrimmage we saw with JT.

I also think Will Howard has a more competent offensive staff that will utilize him in a better way than Urban Meyer utilized JT Barrett. JT was a Tebow-esque player to Urban….Will is gonna be more versatile under Day and Chip Kelly.

Nobody can argue that JTB's not an all-time Buckeye, but you can also can't argue that he was a great passer and I doubt that he would. Although I loved them both, I don't think we win in 2014 with either Miller or Barrett. We had to have Jones to take the top off of defenses and give them something to worry about. Conversely, I don't think we get to that point without Barrett. If we get half the leadership and a bigger, better runner than JTB with Howard at QB, that's great, but it's not enough. There's no way we win it all with a Krenzel/Barrett mashup. Fortunately, I think he's a better passer than either of them, so I think we're good.
