QB1 Will Howard (Official Thread)

No umbrage taken, Suh. My point overall with this, and I've more than segued into the Offense rather than Howard threads, is that I'm hopeful that this season's offense with Howard has the horses and the brain trust to make better use of the talent we have than has been done of late. If we are not destroying defenses, especially the ones we should, there's a problem.

A lot of people on this site should know more than I do, but I think the ability to run a zone read is an underrated skill. The best at running this offense (in my IMO), JT Barrett, took a couple of games to learn how to run it. Against Navy, the offense spluttered. Against Virginia Tech, bleh. It took a few games for him to get it and when he did, well, they put up 49 points against Michigan State, and really didn't struggle outside of the Penn State game. And who remembers Trace McSorley? Big douchebag, but he had a lot of talent. If he was half as good at running that read option as JT Barrett was, Penn State could have had a chance to win some playoff games. As it is, they never made a playoff.

If Howard (whom I know nothing about) can make that read, I think he's the easy choice as starter, and the Buckeyes will be really good.
The zone read with Howard being coached by Kelly damn sure can work. Not saying we make it the entire focal point of the offense (kind of Urban's weakness, except it usually worked). I just think it would be criminal not to use it with Howard and the backs we have. Don't be married to it, but use it because it's there.

One of the few critiques on Day is he outthinks himself on clear talent advantages, you recruited them here to win games, just use the talent within the system. Howard along with that backfield is Kelly's wet dream essentially. Just let him do his thing and I'm pretty sure Howard is the guy to get that concept done this season. Then we'll sort a litany of QB battles after that. That's how I see it anyways, I like the approach though.

I don't pretend to know more than our coaches or others on here either. But with our offensive coaching staff, it does feel like keys to a Lamborghini that was custom fitted just happened.

Agreed.

If Will Howard can give us just good passing I think this offense will be very hard to stop. We have so many options on short yardage situations now. Even 3rd and 7 is pretty manageable running the ball when we have a QB capable of making teams pay.

This.
The only thing with which I disagree is the Lambo analogy. That plays into the out-thinking; what if there's a bump in the road, what if it's raining, etc. My analogy for what I want to see with Howard & Co. is a supercharged Raptor truck that plows ahead at a high rate of speed regardless of road/weather conditions.

He’s used to it. He’s used to playing on bad teams depending on the culture to win.

He’s going to fit in just great. In my opinion he’s going to have people calling Heisman after week 1
I expect most commentators, both in legacy media and on streaming platforms, to dismiss all Ohio State players from Heisman conversation until at least after the Iowa game, and probably until a week later after Oregon

Will’s stats won’t look all that impressive when they sit right next to Treveyon’s 10 ypc on the same stat sheet. Both will be dismissed as having come against teams that “couldn’t compete against southern high schools” by the same people who will go full fan-girl over SEC efforts against bad FCS teams.

Will Howard: 2024 is 'natty or bust' for Ohio State

Coming into the 2024 season, the Ohio State Buckeyes know there are big expectations on their shoulders, with transfer quarterback Will Howard acknowledging that the expectation is going to be to win a national championship.

While at the Manning Passing Academy, Howard shared what he sees as the expectation from Ohio State, acknowledging the team’s talent in 2024.

“For us, it’s natty or bust,” Will Howard said. “I mean, there’s no doubt in my mind.”

“We have all the talent. We have all the intangibles,” Howard said. “Now, we’ve just got to go do it. I’m tired of hearing how talented we are and how good our team is. It’s about the work ethic and how we go to work every single day, and I think we’re doing the things that we need to to put ourselves in that position to be there at the end of the year and now we’ve just got to go do it.”

Pardon my French, I fucking love this kid already. Take that talent you know you have and grind. Then the results will show. All chips in on Howard as our starter.

Yeah, barring any injury he's "the guy". The only real QB competition in the Fall Camp will be for QB2 (i.e. Brown vs Sayin) and maybe for QB4 (i.e. Kienholz vs Noland).

Why Will Howard is more important to the Ohio State football team than people think

Many are overlooking Will Howard, but he could be the reason Ohio State goes far in the 2024 season.

I believe Will Howard is going to be a game-changer for the Buckeyes in 2024. I don't think one bit that he will just be okay and only get the job done. If Ohio State can find their way to a National Championship one of the reasons is going to be because of Howard.

After the horrible performance Kyle McCord gave in 2023 Ohio State knew they needed someone else, with their luck McCord could sense that. That's why no one was really upset that McCord hit the transfer portal and went to Syracuse. After he left they knew they needed to get someone from the transfer portal. After rumors and speculation of a bunch of different quarterbacks coming to Columbus, former Kansas State QB Will Howard transferred to the Buckeyes.

Will Howard is a dual-threat quarterback, if given the chance he will use his legs and find the endzone on his own. In 2023 Howard got 351 rushing yards and with that, he found the end-zone 9 times. Jayden Daniels, the 2023 Heisman Trophy winner, was known for his ability to use his leg too, in 2023 Daniels got 10 rushing touchdowns. While yes Jayden was clearly better at rushing with his 1,134 yards, the fact that Howard got only one less rushing touchdown than him needs to mean something.

SKULL SESSION: WILL HOWARD SAYS OHIO STATE IS “TIRED OF HEARING HOW TALENTED WE ARE” AND JEREMIAH SMITH SAYS HE WANTS TO “WIN GAMES AND WIN THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP”

“WE WANT TO GO OUT THERE AND PROVE IT.” Adam King of 10TV interviewed Will Howard at an NIL event on Friday. King asked the Ohio State quarterback what the program’s goals are this season and how the Buckeyes intend to meet each of them between August and January.

“I feel like if you’re not going for a national championship, then why are you doing it, especially at a program like this? We know that that is the standard for Ohio State football. We know that the expectations this year are really high because we have a lot of returning guys, a lot of older guys,” Howard said. “But as we’ve been saying, we’re tired of hearing how talented we are and how many stars everybody has and all of these different things that everyone is saying about us. We want to go out there and prove it – go out there and out-grit guys and out-tough guys because of what we’ve done this offseason with Coach Mick (Marotti).

"That’s what we want to be known for. We don’t just want to be a talented team. We want to be that tough, gritty team and outwork guys, too. That can really set us over the edge. I think we’re on the right path, and we have to keep going.”
