QB1 Will Howard (Official Thread)

Motion, then the lead blockers
I miss that two TE set where they would run the trap with Zeke, and really the zone read would work Howard. Plus you can get creative with Hendo/Judkins/Howard under a Kelly-run offense. I am so excited to see what they do with the offense under Howard. And yes, I am pretty sure Howard is going to be the starter heading into the first game.

The WHAM was beautiful and I don't mean George Michael.

The fact that Chip Kelly could turn Jeremiah Masoli

Into a sub 60% passer ...?

Let's hope more Darron Thomas...

Then if I’m being honest I’d love to see both backs lead the way for Howard on a QB power.

We had a double 1 and 2 back lead that was used under Tress with Pryor in goal and short yardage. Not a terrible idea.

zone read
A lot of people on this site should know more than I do, but I think the ability to run a zone read is an underrated skill. The best at running this offense (in my IMO), JT Barrett, took a couple of games to learn how to run it. Against Navy, the offense spluttered. Against Virginia Tech, bleh. It took a few games for him to get it and when he did, well, they put up 49 points against Michigan State, and really didn't struggle outside of the Penn State game. And who remembers Trace McSorley? Big douchebag, but he had a lot of talent. If he was half as good at running that read option as JT Barrett was, Penn State could have had a chance to win some playoff games. As it is, they never made a playoff.

If Howard (whom I know nothing about) can make that read, I think he's the easy choice as starter, and the Buckeyes will be really good.

I can offer no statistical support for this and leave it to others to show whether I'm right or wrong (which is entirely possible), but my overall sense of our offense, even much of the time with CJS, has been that we've got a lot of toys to play with and and a lot of tricks in the bag and we fuck around and don't actually use them, at least not consistently to their highest and best use; a ton of horsepower, but only marginal torque.

My hope now is that, with Kelly and a big QB who can run a little and throw a little, we'll just execute and impose this offense on the other side rather than dithering around and having to bail ourselves out on third and long and/or fourth and short. We had waaaay to many 4th downs last year. I appreciate that we went for and converted many of them, but the fact that we had to indicates an upstream problem; tOSU should only have a couple of those, at most, per game. With this staff and talent, we should be able to get back to that number and convert the few we have.

I take solace in the fact that someone put together a Will Howard Lowlight video to support their anti-Howard agenda and it was really only like 5 bad plays…

I can’t say whether you’re right or wrong, but I can offer my perspective

In 2023 the Buckeyes had the weapons but did not have a qb who could overcome deficiencies on the OL

The year before they did have such a QB

What were the results?

They were #2 in the country in scoring offense

Tennessee was #1
They scored 13 points against Georgia

The Buckeyes scored 41

…against Georgia

This was a Georgia team that had not given up points when it mattered all year. They held 7 opponents to 10 points or less. In the SEC CG they clobbered LSU 35-10 in the first half and coasted in the second half. They gave up 20 points in the second half for a total of 30 points, the most scored against them all year.

Then Ohio State scored 41

Having said all that, I think your analogy of horsepower and torque is apt

The part of an offense that supplies torque is the OL, and in 2022, Frye was in his first year on the job and the OL was still lacking. It was a problem that had been identified and moves had been made to address it.

While Will Howard can add to the torque in the red zone, the biggest question about the 2024 offense to me is if Frye has gotten the most of what he has up front. If they can just give us mediocre torque, the weapons will provide all the RPMs we need to reach max power

I don't think you're wrong. In fact, I think it's a symptom of the whole.

The offense was, at best, a collection of toys but no real system. This really showed itself best in the running game. And I think it's a result of the whole offense being run by Day, who had multiple other jobs and responsibilities all competing for time.

With Chip Kelly, I would imagine the offensive game plan will be more cohesive and will build upon elements available to it as it goes along.

No disagreement with any of the above and yet even '22 was enigmatic and left us wondering what could've been. Number 2 offense, but throughout the season there were warning signs, starting with the very first game against ND. Even at times against middle of the conference teams we had too many 3rd and 4th downs and it never felt like we had a juggernaut offense that just imposed its will. It never felt like the #2 offense. I was always holding my breath for Stroud to bail us out and it didn't happen against the shit-weasels.

Your points as to the OL are well taken. Here's hoping they've got it together and at least one of the TEs can figure out how to block.

I know there are those who still expect their favorite team to win even when the other team cheats

I don’t know whether you are one of them or not, I just want to make this perfectly clear, I am not one of them

This is one of those tricky situations where I have to make an exception to one of my self imposed rules. I usually require myself to try to state my opponent’s argument in words that they would agree with. I have to make an exception here because the other side won’t own the obvious implications of the things they say.

There are those who have made it very clear that they think less of Stroud for not beating the CUNTS. Most of them would take great umbrage at having their argument put that way, but when that is the obvious and even inescapable implication of everything you say, your inability or unwillingness to own it is irrelevant to me.

Let me repeat that I don’t think this is you @RugbyBuck , please excuse my use of your post to make this point

… and that point is: I will never think less of Stroud for not beating a team that wasn’t playing by the same rules. I think less of people who do… whether they own it or not
