QB1 Will Howard (Official Thread)

This

Thought I saw his coming out party in east Lansing in 2014. Turns out it was his apogee … through no fault of his own
Who are you referring to? Barrett or Beck? I made the following post assuming you're talking about Barrett. If you're talking about Beck, then never mind.

Barrett's strengths were with his legs, and knowing when to trust them over his arm, and his ability to run the read option. Those things opened up passing lanes that probably wouldn't be available, otherwise. But I think he was more than adequate as a passer. How many consecutive completions did he throw against Penn State in 2017? I think it was 2 bazillion consecutive passes were completed. Of course, then he completed his first pass the next week (Iowa) to the wrong team. But it was still a touchdown.

Back on topic, I would love to see that Howard can run the read option half as well as Barrett could, and that he can spot when to scramble and that he can avoid a tackler or two. If he can do that, passing lanes to our wide receivers should be pretty wide open.

You had it right the first time, I was talking about Barrett, but with a touch of hyperbole

JT (the passer who was with the team 7 years ago, not the current DE) first showed brilliance that night in east Lansing, but it wasn’t the last time. He had a great game against Oklahoma and the one you mentioned against Penn state. But he also had random games of double digit pass efficiency out of nowhere. He could have been great. Subpar coaching ruined him

This started with the expectation that Howard could be a bigger, faster Barrett and that this would be enough to run the table. Again, insert the appropriate JTB accolades, but you don't win in a 12-team playoff without being a better than solid passer and you don't win it with a JTB or Krenzel. That's why I say that in this context, which is all that matters now, JTB or a JTB-like QB is a liability. Fortunately, I think that this year's QB1 is better than solid on each side of the triangle: leadership/heart; running; passing. That's what it will take.

And that broken leg with Cardale showing out in his place. I'm not sure he ever trusted that leg again after that. Both his running and passing slipped after his first season. People need to go back and watch JTs first year as a starter. He was on his way to a Heisman if that injury didnt happen.

If Howard gives us that then I probably wont even need my blood pressure meds this Fall.

I think losing Herman was a bigger deal than anything else. Just can’t replace Herman with Ed Warriner and expect him to do well.

On topic, I really think Will is going to do big things this year. I’m not expecting Justin Fields 2019 but I think he can be what this team needs which is a QB that moves the chains and scores touchdowns.

With this defense we don’t need much.

Agreed, I think he can be a QB for whom the defense has to account out of the pocket, whether designed, RPO, or picking up yardage IF (big if) our receivers are covered, or there's a broken play. We haven't had or at least haven't used that luxury lately. Also, huge if he can be a legit goal line option/threat.

Yes, the room is stacked

And Will is at the top of the pile by enough margin to be be declared starter half way through camp

That tells us something
It certainly does. I've seen enough of Will at KSU and his interviews to be very confident in him having a big year if he stays healthy. I would be pretty surprised if he doesn't thrive in this offense.

I feel confident for Howard with Kelly as the OC calling plays. I would've been worried if OSU was back to status quo of Day calling plays and expecting to be Stroud

Well NCAA25 sure thinks Will is good. Holy crap he never misses in that game. We all know that video games are life so, we're in good hands. LOL

Just go watch some of his tape on Youtube. When you are watching it though try and think about the guys he's going to be throwing to compared to what you are watching. Then add in Chip Kelly and Ryan Day to his equation. He's going to do big things this year.

I think this is the biggest thing Will brings to the offense.

For all of Ryan Day’s amazing offensive ingenuity and ability to score points……he stalls out way too often in the red zone.

I think Will fixes that this year. I think our red zone TD efficiency is about to sky-rocket above the last (2) years.

Even CJ’s numbers inside the redone were underwhelming for such an elite QB…..when the QB doesn’t have to be accounted for in run game, defenses easily key in on how to stop the offense. Will brings the “x” factor needed to correct this…..

If you’d said two of the last three years I could have agreed completely…

In RZ TD % the Buckeyes were 45th and 47th respectively in 2021 and 2023

But in that year in the middle, 2022, the Buckeyes were 6th nationally in RZ TD %
