PITTSBURGH ? Terrelle Pryor probably won?t even be in uniform Sunday. But he could be the Raiders? quarterback of the future.
So says Carson Palmer, the veteran QB who will start when the Raiders (0-2) host the Steelers (1-1).
?He?s athletic and one of the most gifted athletes on the field and probably in the league,? Palmer said. ?He?s just a phenomenal athlete.
?A lot of guys just grow up being bigger, faster and stronger than everybody and don?t quite have the work ethic. He works as hard as anybody I?ve been around. He wants to be great. He practices hard. He studies hard. He watches a ton of film. He?s got a great combination of God-given ability and skill to go with a great work ethic and a great desire to be a great player.?
After leaving Ohio State last year in the wake of NCAA sanctions levied against him and four other Buckeyes, Pryor was picked by the Raiders in a supplemental draft. However, there were doubts about his ability to play quarterback in the NFL. It was speculated that he might be better off if he switched to wide receiver, tight end, linebacker or safety.
But Pryor, the former Jeannette High School star who?s exceptionally fast for a guy who's 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds, wanted to remain a quarterback
?If we had a bunch of guys on (injured reserve), he could probably play any position on the field,? Palmer said. ?He?s athletic enough, he?s big enough, and he understands enough about the game to get away with it. But he?s a quarterback. He needs to stay a quarterback for his career. He?s going to have a great chance to be a really good player.?
Pryor is listed on the Raiders? depth chart behind Palmer and backup Matt Leinart.
In the Raiders? first two games this season, Pryor was designated as one of seven game-day inactives and didn?t dress.
Last year, he sat out of the Raiders? first five games while serving a suspension stemming from a five-game ban he would have had at Ohio State. He only played in one game, for just one play, as a Raider rookie.
That came on Oct. 23 against the Chiefs. He lined up at wide receiver, went in motion until he got behind center where he took the snap and ran a QB sneak. However, the play was negated. Pryor was called for a false start.
