QB/WR Terrelle Pryor ('10 Rose, '11 Sugar MVP)

PITTSBURGH ? Terrelle Pryor probably won?t even be in uniform Sunday. But he could be the Raiders? quarterback of the future.

So says Carson Palmer, the veteran QB who will start when the Raiders (0-2) host the Steelers (1-1).

?He?s athletic and one of the most gifted athletes on the field and probably in the league,? Palmer said. ?He?s just a phenomenal athlete.

?A lot of guys just grow up being bigger, faster and stronger than everybody and don?t quite have the work ethic. He works as hard as anybody I?ve been around. He wants to be great. He practices hard. He studies hard. He watches a ton of film. He?s got a great combination of God-given ability and skill to go with a great work ethic and a great desire to be a great player.?

After leaving Ohio State last year in the wake of NCAA sanctions levied against him and four other Buckeyes, Pryor was picked by the Raiders in a supplemental draft. However, there were doubts about his ability to play quarterback in the NFL. It was speculated that he might be better off if he switched to wide receiver, tight end, linebacker or safety.

But Pryor, the former Jeannette High School star who?s exceptionally fast for a guy who's 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds, wanted to remain a quarterback

?If we had a bunch of guys on (injured reserve), he could probably play any position on the field,? Palmer said. ?He?s athletic enough, he?s big enough, and he understands enough about the game to get away with it. But he?s a quarterback. He needs to stay a quarterback for his career. He?s going to have a great chance to be a really good player.?

Pryor is listed on the Raiders? depth chart behind Palmer and backup Matt Leinart.

In the Raiders? first two games this season, Pryor was designated as one of seven game-day inactives and didn?t dress.

Last year, he sat out of the Raiders? first five games while serving a suspension stemming from a five-game ban he would have had at Ohio State. He only played in one game, for just one play, as a Raider rookie.

That came on Oct. 23 against the Chiefs. He lined up at wide receiver, went in motion until he got behind center where he took the snap and ran a QB sneak. However, the play was negated. Pryor was called for a false start.

Pryor Makes an Impact in the Community

QB Terrelle Pryor spent time with the students of Barack Obama Academy ? Seneca Center, an alternative education middle school, in Oakland, Calif. Pryor spoke to the students about the importance of choosing the right path, making good decisions and making education a priority. He also played football and basketball outside with the students, putting a smile on their faces.

Barack Obama Academy is considered a second-chance program. ?The kids that we get here usually need additional academic support and behavior support,? said Kimberly Wayne, School Director ? Seneca Center. ?We have classroom counselors in each of the classes, just offering kids support, more like redirection, positive praise, prompting to help them stay in class and get their work done. The kids that come to this school typically haven?t done well in a larger middle school setting.?

Wayne believed Pryor?s presence had a big impact on the students. ?He was great,? said Wayne. ?I think for a lot of these kids, they?re sort of at a fork in the road and they might go down the wrong path, but that?s part of why we?re here, to help them choose to go down the right path. Some of the stuff that he talked about with them about making good choices and staying focused and staying in school and being around good people ? I think that was a real important message for them, hearing that you get to pick who you?re around. That was really positive.?

Oakland Raiders quarterback Terrelle Pryor (6) gestures while standing near... (JOSE CARLOS FAJARDO)

ALAMEDA -- With young, athletic quarterbacks all the rage in the NFL, particularly right now across the bay, it only makes sense that the Raiders would consider taking a look at Terrelle Pryor.

Though it's unlikely to resemble the sea change going on with Colin Kaepernick in San Francisco, Raiders coach Dennis Allen said Monday that he and his coaches have "discussed" the possibility of taking a look at Pryor in some capacity.

It's unclear whether that might be at quarterback or in some kind of special package that takes advantage of Pryor's impressive combination of size, speed and elusiveness.

"He's working to get better, and he's working to improve," Allen said of Pryor. "He's gotten better as a quarterback. I don't think any of us feel like he's the finished product, including himself, but he has worked to improve."

Carson Palmer, who turns 33 on Dec. 27 and is under contract through 2016, has passed for 3,181 yards and is within reach of Rich Gannon's single-season team record (4,689 in 2002).

Pryor, 23 and acquired by Al Davis in the August 2011 supplemental draft, wasn't available for comment Monday.

Pryor hasn't been active for any of Oakland's first 11 games. He has yet to attempt a pass in a regular-season game since he joined the Raiders before the 2011 season.

He showed glimpses of what he can do at quarterback during some of the Raiders' exhibition games, both with his feet and his strong arm. But the Raiders will have to decide whether Pryor is worthy of being Palmer's successor or if there's some way to use him other than as the full-time quarterback.

Raiders considering Pryor

Oakland Raiders head coach Dennis Allen revealed Monday that the team has "discussed" using the third-string signal caller Terrelle Pryor recently, according to the Contra Costa Times. Pryor is still third on the depth chart, behind Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart. The Raiders are 3-8, having lost four straight games ahead of a Week 13 showdown with the similarly hapless Cleveland Browns. Allen hinted that the team could look to Pryor to rejuvenate its sagging fortunes and add another dimension to an offense scoring less than 20 points per game this season. Allen was less clear on exactly what role Pryor could play for the Raiders. Replacing Palmer seems unlikely, but Pryor could be used in special packages designed to take advantage of his mobility and big arm.

I understand the math involved in the wildcat offense, essentially evening the numbers advantage a defense usually has... but nothing is less deceptive than 'special packages' for backup mobile quarterbacks... unless, of course, the special package is a pass play... which begs the question of why not play the quarterback with more weapons all the time... ?

Oakland Raiders: Might Terrelle Pryor get his chance?

ALAMEDA -- Could there be a Terrelle Pryor sighting Sunday?

He might actually put on a Raiders uniform against the Cleveland Browns at O.co Coliseum, and that would be a start.

"I feel like I haven't played in a year," the team's third-string quarterback said this week.

Pryor was last seen in a game Aug. 30 in the preseason finale against the Seattle Seahawks, completing 6 of 9 passes for 55 yards. The previous week, Pryor did something remarkable in that he made a preseason game memorable.

In a 31-20 win over the Detroit Lions, Pryor completed 3 of 5 passes for 137 yards and touchdown passes of 76 and 39 yards to Juron Criner. He ran the ball five times for 90 yards, including a 59-yard scramble around right end followed by an 18-yard touchdown run.

That's eight plays totaling 227 yards and three TDs, a stunning exhibition of all the athletic skill that made Pryor the last draft pick Al Davis ever made, a third-round supplemental selection out of Ohio State in 2011.

It also made Pryor somewhat of a "people's choice" among a segment of Raider Nation. Those fans aren't overly concerned about the footwork and foundational issues that are being refined on a daily basis by quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo and offensive coordinator Greg Knapp.

Still probably the most incredible athlete I've ever seen wear a Buckeye football uniform. You have to think the Raiders can find some way to take advantage of all that physical talent.
Did you ever see Jack Tatum? How many defensive backs can literally change a game? Woody called him the best athlete he ever coached.
