QB/WR Terrelle Pryor ('10 Rose, '11 Sugar MVP)

Lessons learned from Saturday's preseason game

? Terrelle Pryor somehow put up 227 total yards and three touchdowns on only three completions and five rushes. It was in garbage time, but that should help erase any doubts about whether he'll make the team.

Oakland Raiders beat Detroit Lions, 31-20

Pryor's final line: 3-of-5 passing for 137 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 90 yards and a score on five carries. He dedicated the victory to his father Craig and mentor Theodore Sarniak III. Both died in the span of a week in July.

Probably not the best picture to prove the point of his love for OSU since that tattoo is probably one of the reasons the team is not going bowling this year, but point taken.

OAKLAND ? On the scoreboard and the stat sheet, it was a convincing end to a six-game preseason losing streak.

The Raiders beat the Detroit Lions 31-20 Saturday in what amounted a coming-out party for quarterback Terrelle Pryor.

The Raiders had 513 yards of total offense and 27 first downs, and they held Detroit to 281 yards and a scant 2.7 yards per attempt on the ground. All in all, a satisfying first win for Raiders coach Dennis Allen.

?We talk about creating habits and you?re either creating good habits or bad habits, and today we created a good habit,? Allen said. ?It's a good habit to get into winning.?

Yet there is room for improvement, and it remains to be seen what the Raiders (1-2 in preseason) will bring to the table when they host the San Diego Chargers on Sept. 10 in their season opener.

Pryor completed 3 of 5 passes for 137 yards and touchdown throws of 39 and 76 yards to rookie Juron Criner. He ran five times for 90 yards, and accounted for 76 yards of a 77-yard drive on two runs ? a 59-yard dash down the right sideline and a 17-yard escape act for a touchdown.

Poole: Terrelle Pryor tantalizes Oakland Raiders fans
By Monte Poole
Bay Area News Group

OAKLAND -- Not until late in the third quarter Saturday did Raiders fans at the Coliseum reach full roar and come out of their seats. A few went out of their minds.

This spasm of passion was a response to a single play by the backup quarterback's backup -- in an exhibition game.

Terrelle Pryor, entering his second NFL season, is third string on Oakland's depth chart, nowhere near being a legitimate threat to the job security of backup Matt Leinart, much less starter Carson Palmer.

Pryor is a developmental project, and the development is still very much in its early stages. The Ohio State product is, at best, years away from a finished product.

But fans bothering to attend the Raiders' 31-20 win over Detroit are yearning for a revival. They'd sat patiently, witnessing mostly ordinary activity. Irritating penalties (addictions are hard to break) and ghastly displays on special teams (an unwanted new habit) were framed by spurts of offensive production and defensive muscle.

The Raiders and their fans, 41,104 in attendance, needed something, anything, to stir the senses. Pryor delivered.

Jeez, easy Debbie Downer...I said the guy has what it takes and is showing his skills - never said greatness. Dont be so damn sensitive, were talking one player here.

And yes, given the Raiders track record the last decade they have shown that they cant mature a player. Please, tell me you really don't think that Oakland is a city a player can grow, do you? When was the last time the Raiders were dominant with a bunch of great players and a solid coaching staff?

Raiders in the last decade has had 7 - SEVEN - different head coaches. They havent had a head coach that has had a winning record since Jon Gruden!
It's not like anything has changed recently in Oakland...

Terrelle Pryor takes big steps forward

Terrelle Pryor is still far from being a polished quarterback for the Raiders and isn't likely to move up the depth chart any time soon.

His footwork needs improvement, and he's still trying to get comfortable staying in the pocket instead of taking off on a run as he did many times in college.

Pryor is making progress, though. He put up 227 yards of offense and threw two touchdown passes in the second half of the Raiders' 31-20 preseason win over Detroit on Saturday in what was easily the highlight of his young NFL career.

"He had his good plays, and he had his bad plays," Raiders head coach Dennis Allen said Sunday. "The thing I was impressed with was there was progress. He made a couple of nice throws. (The Lions) came with pressure, and he was able to get outside of the pocket and make a couple of nice throws."

More than the numbers, Allen liked Pryor's command of the huddle and his communication. Those were two issues with which the third-string quarterback struggled in training camp.

Against Detroit, Pryor played with the second-string offense because backup quarterback Matt Leinart sat out with an injured index finger on his non-throwing hand.

Pryor appeared calm while leading Oakland on three scoring drives in the second half.

He broke free on a 59-yard run in the third quarter, then scrambled for a 17-yard touchdown after stepping up in the pocket to avoid a sack.

Pryor later threw touchdown passes of 39 and 76 yards to rookie wide receiver Juron Criner, the second of which came after Pryor rolled to his right and had to throw back across his body.

"It was a good time," Pryor said. "I love this feeling, and I want more of it."

Get over it. Al Davis is dead so this team is clearly transitioning to being
an actual football team. The day's of $hitty coaching and yes men are over. Hopefully, no more stupid drafts and bad coaches that do whatever the big man said.

Regardless of the defense he faced, he played a decent game. While it's certainly no shadow of future success, it's nice to see him actually having fun out htere for once. It should help his confidence.

Can Terrelle Pryor pass another test?
August, 29, 2012
By Bill Williamson | ESPN.com

The most intriguing player on the field in any of the final preseason games of the summer is probably Terrelle Pryor.

The second-year Oakland quarterback thrust himself into the spotlight with a dazzling performance against the Detroit Lions in the second half of an Oakland Raiders? win. After a shaky training camp and a poor showing in the first two preseason games, Pryor was phenomenal against the Lions.

He had a 59-yard run and a 17-yard touchdown run. But most importantly, he had passing success. He was 3-of-5 passing for 137 yards and with two touchdown passes to rookie Juron Criner.

Pryor will likely play extensively Thursday night at the Seattle Seahawks. I want to see him continue to throw the ball well as we all know he can run.

The difference between Pryor having a legitimate chance to be a starting quarterback some day or just being a fast, athletic preseason novelty will be his passing game. His biggest problem throwing the ball has been consistency. If he can deliver a second straight good preseason showing, the Raiders -- who will likely figure out some packages to feature Pryor occasionally in the regular season -- could feel good about Pryor as a potential starter down the road.

With starter Carson Palmer turning 33 in December and showing signs of decline the past four years, Oakland may start thinking about grooming a potential starter soon. If it doesn?t have faith in Pryor, the Raiders see th drafting a quarterback early next year.

Pryor is going to be the No. 3 quarterback this season, but Thursday is his chance to let the team know he should be their first option in the future.

Forgot how fast he was, and how effortless he makes outrunning people look. He's like a huge version of Ginn in that sense.

EDIT: I was referring to the highlights on the previous page.
