QB/WR Braxton Miller (B1G POY, National Champion, OSU HOF)

It's a tough comparison. Miller is a far, far better runner and breakaway threat. Smith had a stronger arm and better accuracy than Miller has shown to date. As Tressel said about Troy at the time, "he can make all the throws".

Having said that, we're also talking about a kid who is just starting his true sophomore year. At this same stage, Smith was returning kicks and not even the scout team QB.

Smith didn't even face Michigan until his 3rd (RS soph) year.

I know. In five years' time though, nobody's going to care how early in his career Miller got to play against M*ch*g*n. They will care whether or not he was able to beat them, and how he did against them when the stakes were highest.

Other QBs have had great stats and led some pretty good teams. Troy Smith is held up as one of the standard bearers though because when he got his chance he beat M*ch*g*n, and did it with championship possibilities at stake.

Bobby Hoying is a historical example of the point I'm trying to make. He was an excellent QB and led some pretty good teams. He posted pretty good stats and set some school passing records along the way. He was 1-2 as a starter against M*ch*g*n though, and lost the two of the three that mattered most. You never see this kind of discussion with his name thrown out there. I never hear Ohio State fans hoping that the current QB has a career as good as Hoying's.

Miller's record against M*ch*g*n will be the prism thru which his career is viewed. With that in mind I think it's premature to compare him to somebody who beat them three times as a starter and got the job done when the stakes were highest against them.
