QB/WR Braxton Miller (B1G POY, National Champion, OSU HOF)

I've got to say that I wondered whether Fickell wasn't holding Miller out precisely because he wanted to hold something out for Miami. I must admit that it was because I couldn't understand why he wasn't putting him in.
Seems like a crazy risk from the perspective of toledo driving toward the endzone at the end of the game. What ever happened to "one game at a time"?

The argument could be made... and I'm about to make it... that Fickell's decision-making, at least on this issue, was similar to Bauserman's play: slow to get moving and execute; by the time the decision is made and he's in position to throw, it's too late and it's either overthrown or thrown out of bounds.

The game got away from Fickell and he lost the window to put Braxton in. One way to stop that from happening is to start Braxton.

I think it was a rookie mistake. This *is* Fickell's first year as a head coach. He's not going to be perfect with every decision.

It was also his first difficult game to coach. I've coached for many years, some as an assistant, some as the head coaches and can attest that coaches do freeze. It's happened to me in big games before-all early in my career. Sometimes you fall back on the plays you feel most comfortable with, sometimes you forget things you worked on all week. It happens at all levels, not sure if it happened here, but it does happen.

I also have a feeling that Miller did get alot more practice time will JHall and when the shoe dropped that Hall couldn't play it screwed up the plays that Miller had practiced all week. The only downside I have heard about Miller is him trying to grasp the playbook and if the trigger guy isn't in the plays he practiced maybe fickell was nervous he would make a bad decision.

Not only that, but likely any chance he had of holding onto the job would be out the window..

What if he believes that there is almost a certainty he won't get the job unless he really pulls off a special year and is a "risk-seeking" individual?

Guys, don't see this guy through the "risk-averse" eyes of Jim Tressel. If he's going to keep this job, he needs to take high risks. Was the Toledo place the game to do that? Did he take risks for a purpose? None of us know, even though it is most unlikely.

My point is to remain open to the possibility.

My gosh, there are a lot of fine posters here on BP. As you know, the edit situation is something has been - not a problem - but something that I have had my eye on for some time. You have to set a good example. We strive for that here. You work at it, and you try to edit in a manner that speaks well of this fine institution, and for the posters that I think we all want to be. And I was worried about the kids - those that would read the fals.....let me say "non-correct" entry by our staff on the Eddie George thing, and let me say that there is no finer representative of the Ohio State University than Mr. George.....so that a change to the correct Heisman winner was not - and I truly believe this - an attempt for myself to non-correctly answer, as it was to change for the better as we go ahead, and to learn from what some will call mistakes, but what I call an opportunity to better express the correctness that we all desire.

Thank you.

A possibilitiy: Miller has a long way to go on the playbook and the staff has inflated his chances to start this season.

I hope that isn't the case because I'd love to see him come out and bring life to the offense. But if we didn't have a good time for it against Toledo, when will it be a good time on the road in Miami?

I'm tired of quarterback controversey. We've been struggling between pro style and multiple style for a long time.

Again, Jordan Hall being removed from the line-up makes the Braxton Miller package extremely limited.

If we were up big, then you let Braxton go out and execute the normal offense. But for Braxton to be comfortable and an offensive weapon, you want him executing the offense he has practiced all off-season which revolve around creative sets using Jordan Hall.

You can't motion Carlos Hyde/Rod Smith to the slot or motion them from the slot to the backfield if they aren't comfortable doing it. The next time we see Braxton, you're going to see sets we haven't seen in games yet. And that is what Braxton is comfortable with. It's the Stan Drayton influence on offense. But we haven;t seen it in a game yet b/c of suspensions.

Just because he ran the basic offense against Akron, primarily b/c Hall was suspended in that game too, doesn't mean that is the offense he is most used to running.

The more I think about it, the more I come to this conclusion:

I think more than anything, we need to take Coach Fick at his word: The gameplan was to use BM but when the time came, it was a bit more of a gamble to put him in there than he was willing to take. Young QB, tight ballgame. I can see why he'd wanna stay put with JB. We can all sit here and say BM coulda offered this and that but it never happened, nor has he proven he can do that yet. I for one, THINK BM could have provided a much needed spark but that doesn't mean there isn't a higher level of risk involved. I can understand Coach wanting to stick with Joe there.

With that said, I also think Jordan Hall's suspension had a big, negative impact on our offensive productivity. Those end arounds had Jordan's name all over them. We didn't spread out the offense much because we didn't have any of our spread RB's fully ready or eligible. I think that played a minor role in BM staying put on the sideline too.

I'm sure they had every intention of getting Braxton into the game assuming we had a comfortable lead. However, even in a tight game, Braxton gets significant PT if Hall is healthy. Because if Hall is healthy, he can execute the offense he has been running all off-season.

I don't think it's that complicated. With Hall now in the line-up, look for Braxton to run our spread with Hall as his side-kick. The reason Hall is so impactful on Braxton's playing time, is no other running back can operate the system they have put in for them.
