QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

ScarletInMyVeins said:
How many times does this have to be said? Smith took the money LONG before any of this new bullshit started with Clarett. Smith took the money in the spring. This was before he was the starting QB, before he took his first snap of the year, hell it was probably before the spring game. So I don't wanna hear about the timing of the incident. Was it wrong of him to take the money? Yes. I think it was just a coincidence that this came out at the same time everything else did, and it is probably a result of OSU looking harder into booster relations (wbb, mbb, fb, whatever else) and we will probably hear about more of these kinds of things.
He did take the money after the original MoC problems for accepting money and the cell phone. Troy did know better and deserves whatever punishment he gets.

I never said the he doesn't deserve to be punished. The point I'm trying to make is that a lot of people think that this all happened after the ESPiN the magazine thing did, and while the story did break after all of that happened, the incident took place months before any of the new clarett bullshit. I just want people to understand that, and it seems that most do not.

What bothers me about this is the people who either want to give TS the starting job because they feel he is the most qualified, or conversely, the people who feel TS should be tossed from the team (or even those who wish him to transfer). The long and the short of it breaks down like this:

TS broke an NCAA rule, before the MoC ESPN story broke. Did he break the rule? Yes. Is he being punished? Yes. Is his punishment appropriate for his "crime"? Yes - according to the NCAA standards that were in place both at the time he violated the rule, and when he was caught. I don't give a damn what you people think he did to tOSU or his team...the fact remains that there is a clear punishment for this exact offense, and the team is following those guidelines. To punish this athlete any further is, without a doubt, dead wrong. Now, if JT wants to set up new guidelines for his team, which make clear that any further similiar transgression will be dealt with more severely, then I will support him fully, and I will support him if he has to impose that same punishment on a future rule-breaker.

At the same time, however, those who feel that TS has been punished and deserves his starting job back, especially if they feel he deserves the job because he is the most talented or best QB we have, well, you are wrong as well. TS will start at the bottom of the depth chart. But he will have every opportunity to earn his way back to the top. If he does that before the Texas game, then he deserves it. If he does it by mid-season, then he deserves it. If he never does it, then he deserves that, as well. It's all up to TS now. If he is the best QB we have, and can make it two more years without any further off-field problems, then he will eventually be the starter. When doesn't really matter. If not, then we will see another QB for the next two years. Either way, the best QB on the roster will be playing for tOSU, and that is as it should be.

I feel strongly about this topic for two major reasons.....

1 - Although Troy made his mistakes he should stay and rebuild his reputation. He should have to sit the bench if need be. Why would any Buckeye fan just toss a student athlete out the window if he has put his work in. The only thing Smith has done wrong is be a part of the MoC contreversy. Somehow Someway we are supposed to judge these players. Not I, I'm not that special. When Smith plays and proves to everyone he has good character and just made a mistake that is when I will smile but until then I hold my boot to the ground, if he faulters again then I pick it up and plant it in his status as a BUCKEYE!

2 - Any Buckeye is a Buckeye because they have choosen and been choosen to be one. Let Tressel use his judgement on whether he should play or not, but he should not be granted the right to leave tOSU. I like to back my boys up, so thats what I intend to do. Otherwise you just joined the ESPiN bandwagon. Which I will never do - BUCKEYE FOR LIFE!!!!!!

I'm starting to think we need to have someone write a blog that is put on the front page explaining to people that the progression was as follows:

Spring 04 - Smith accepts cash to pay for his retarded (no offense to mental handicapped individuals by aligning you with Clarett...) buddy's cell phone

Fall 04 - Zwick is the starter, Smith eventually earns spot

October 04 - ESPiN campaign begins against tOSU with Clarett allegations

November 04 - Smith becomes a legend of The Game

December 04 - tOSU finds out about Spring04 violation by Smith

December 04 - Smith is suspended, Zwick starts in bowl game

I'm not defending whether it was right or wrong, but rather his punishment is just fine. The kid should be on the team. I know it takes two to tango (as billy madison would say), but he's a college kid with probably not as much money as someone would with an actual job so a good sum of money would probablly be taken by most college kids if offered. I think you give serious penalties to the boosters for actually trying to corrupt these players, and give substantial punishment to the players. Yeah I agree the timing was bad, but again, what would ESPN be without these mistakes that happened months and sometimes years ago.

I respect all opinions, but I definatly wouldn't wanna see the kid tossed off the team. Oh one more thing. I believe its Zwicks job to lose, and troy will have to push very hard to start for the texas game.

I could care less who the qb is as long as they make the right decisions on the field and make the throws. We know that we have 3 great receivers and we have seen that we can open it up and get the ball to them. Our OL should be stronger and provide a bit more time.

I believe that any of the three are capable of leading this offense as we have a bunch of weapons. I believe that it will be tough for Troy to work his way back up the charts without injury to players but all 3 can do the job.

The one thing to consider as well is that if Zwick/Boeckman is capable of running a good offense (despite not being able to scramble), it will save us a lot of earaches about Clarett. Obviously they'll never totally ignore what happened last year, but Smith at QB means a guaranteed segment at least once during the broadcast where they reflect on the past.

you missed his arrest, and his parochial missteps

If you need money.. goto the bank... there is this new fangled thing called a loan.

My guess is... losing something you own is pretty substantial.. and then not only that, but being barred from anything Ohio State would seem pretty substantial too.. (the only thing more Ohio State could do legally is sue)

BTW, that poll 2 pages back... other than the whole thing about it being "one-sided", did anyone else notice that only TWENTY SIX people took the poll? It's not tough to walk into the "Michigan Lovers of Columbus" meeting and poll their members about Troy Smith... lol.

my fav is the credit card. its like the greatest thing ever! you buy whatever you want and they send you a bill for like 10 bucks a month. it rocks!!! though i hear its tough for a kid to get one of those in college...

or better yet, it was his mothers bill. maybe she should have gone to check-n-go... not to be heartless but damn. call the phone company and setup payments or something sheesh. there are fixes for this type of thing. the worst they can do is put it on her credit report. and even then, that isn't the end of the world. i just refinanced my house at 5.5% interest with an outstanding bill of 8k on my credit report from 2 years ago. *shrug* the company lied, didn't provide the services as promised, and i refuse to pay. took a letter from my lawyer for the loan to go through but they won't stop me from buying anything i want at the lowest interest rate available. this is a really good lesson for ts. not every problem in the world has a quick fix no matter who you are or how important you "think" you are.
