QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

So if there was a vbet for who the starting QB will be in the 3rd game next year who would your vcash be on?

Personally I think the job is Zwick's to lose. The bright side for him this year is that there won't be any growing pains for the offense. They should all come out firing.

Maybe I missed something but Troy has spring and fall practice in front of him to make up that ground. He has to serve whatever suspension he is given, but he doesn't have to wait for Zwick and Boeckman to get injured or drop off the earth to move up the charts.
lets assume just for the sake of arguement ts doesn't miss any practice time. you think he's going to make up ground to what exactly? to not play in the 1st game of the season? jz was the starter at the begining of the year chief. he didn't get benched till he got hurt. we know for a fact that ts expects to be teh #3 guy to start the year. SO, starting in game two (because he won't even dress up for game one) he will be the #3 qb.

whoever starts game one is tressel's #1 period. if your not the #1 guy in game one you have to work your way up or be a senior. while i will entertain, if not agree, that ts is the best qb on the team. i seriously doubt he is so much better he could work his way past both jz AND boeckman DURING the season without a loss or someone getting hurt. if he were so much better he would have been the starter at the begining of the year.

I can recall several players (Wilhem comes to mind) who were moved down the chart due to injuries, etc and had to work their way back. They did so without missing a game.
wilhelm was injured, not suspended. secondly, wilhelm was significantly better than the guys he moved over. no offense to them, wilhelm was just alot better. ts wasn't injured, he prostituted himself and the team. not to make more of his situation than it is. but to argue that ts and wilhelm's situations are similar is beyond laughable. secondly, ts will miss a game period. he's arleady missed 1. he will without question miss the first game of the season. there is no way for him to not miss a game.

unlike wilhelm's situation, ts isn't that much better than anyone. hell, he wasn't even our flippin starter last year! he didn't "replace" ANYONE. he came in when someone got hurt. at no point last year was he able to "prove himself" better than jz. if he had, he would have started long before loss #3.

Certainly Troy has put himself in a fix but my understanding of the way JT works (and should work) is that consequences are meted out for your actions. After that it is over. No stigma. No scarlet letter. Over.
ts will be punished accordingly. he will miss his 2 games and will start the season (game 2) as the #3 qb. he will not be mistreated. he will be given the same look for the starting job that any qb off the street walking into game two would get. which is reaslistically speaking, nil.

i can promise you none of us want to see happen at tOSU what would be required for ts to be the starter this season.

There was a note that the suspension was such that he would be allowed to work out with the team .... and practice with the team.

Even so ... if he is suspended for game one .... and JZ gets all the reps, and we wingame one handily ..... would we switch QBs for game two against Texass.

I don't see it ....

Geoger said he was thnking of applying for reinstatement for game one ...
feeling that missing a bowl game and the activities involved with the bowl game were equivalent to a two game suspension for the regular season.

Since then ... there have been posters claiming that the suspension
a) would not be appealed.
b) reinstatment would not be applied for until more than two games.

Geigers original response was that this would take place immediately after the bowl game was complete, so thatt everyone knew where they stood.

JT as a "family" guy will more than likely follow through with the original plan, and we wil know the answer to all of this when the NCAA releases their decision.

Actually, if things get "cleared up" very soon- like the ncaa wraps up with no more findings, I think Troy should be allowed to practice like everyone else and play this spring. If the investigation isn't completed I think Troy should have to wait, just in case. After he is reinstated pending the outcome he should be able to compete for the job back.

Actually, Tressel said there was going to be a QB change after the Iowa debacle, injury or not.

If that's truly the case, then I think Smith has a real good chance to get back on the coaches' good side and to re-win the confidence of his teammates. Keep in mind that Tressel said in a sound byte during the Alamo Bowl that, "Come December 30, he'll have half his suspension over with" or something close to that. There's no doubt that Tressel is ready to give him another chance.

my first response would be, what were the options to choose from on that poll? generally i have found that polls are generally created in a way to force the voters to choose a particular answer. not to elicite an acurate and unbiased view from the public.

which of the following best characterises troy smith?
A. deranged pshyco killer
B. repeat offender who should be kicked off the team
C. nun

so i try to take "polls" with a grain of salt. though i certainly wouldn't call foul if he were kicked off the team. is a 2 game suspension to leniant? the NCAA doesn't seem to think so. would a stiffer penalty be better for both troy smith and the team? imo, probably. but my experience in such matters. ill leave the punishment aspect of this to people who know what they are talking about.

Does any one else see how crazy it is that the media (and apparently, a lot of fans) is coming down on tOSU for recommending the NCAA standard punishment of 20% of the season (2 games)? The NCAA rule says "2 games", tOSU recommends "2 games", but somehow this isn't good enough. Outside of Brand (and probably other NCAA officials), no one seems to appreciate how proactive tOSU has been with this whole thing. What punishment did FSU hand down to Peter Warrick until it was forced upon them by the NCAA? There's all kinds of examples of schools that sit around and wait for the NCAA to give out punishments. TOSU is bigger and better than that. They handle issues themselves because they believe in the rule - not because they have to. What punishment did Clarett, or O'Brien, or Smith OFFICIALLY receive from the NCAA? In the O'Brien case, tOSU holds O'Brien accountable for his actions, and NOW THEY'RE GETTING SUED FOR IT!!! O'Brien has forever tarnished my image of him. Thank GOD that blood suckers gone. Now, tOSU is again taking matters into their own hands and handing out a punishment that the NCAA has deemed "fair and appropriate" for Smith's crime. But, we want to kick this 19 year old of off the team? This whole thing makes me sick. Half of these posts make me sick.

Anyone need a soapbox? I'm done with this one now.

I agree witch'ya, yertle. So often during the whole NY Times-Maurice Clarett-ESPN-Troy Smith mess, posters have blasted the media for being unfair to Ohio State and then turned around and have done the very same thing. Ohio State recommended Troy's punishment based on NCAA precident. Their recommendation is not "light". It's what the NCAA itself would demand, given its history. It seems that the media's perception of things has gotten to some posters.

I hope Smith doesnt leave, and I hope he doesn't get kicked off the team (thats what this thread was originally about wasn't it?). Call me selfish or short sighted, or ever an idiot, but I believe Smith's ability to add a third dimension to the offense could very well mean the difference in a NC run. Maybe I'm wrong, but I cant help but think it.
