You know this is a troy thread so here I am......

I sure hope Troy sticks around, and while he did take money you can't fault him.
If you're saying you wouldn't take something FREE if offered then you're definatly lie'n. Honestly I believe Zwick is good also, but Troys ability to scramble and get yards is uncanny for an OSU QB. What I see in Troy's delievery after watching tapes is that he's very smart and makes good hard accurate throws. He's very precise and has a very good arm with a nice spiral.

I believe Zwick could get us a NC, but I think it'd be a better shot with Troy. I hope he's back because if not for Troy I don't think we win 7 games heading into the Alamo Bowl. I know that our recievers came around for troy, but I think Troy got the ball rolling with his leadership abilities and the way he presents himself to the team. IMO big loss if we lose troy.

I disagree. I think you can blame him.

He's supposed to be a team leader. All those little clips they showed during THE GAME where Troy spoke about leadership now ring just a little hollow with me.

He broke the Cardinal NCAA rule. He took money from a booster knowing full well what ramifications that could have on the Ohio State program. He selfishly put the team in jeopardy (Alamo Bowl) and the program (NCAA investigation) in jeopardy. IMO this is not what a team guy does. I know he's a kid, but he knows what he can and can't do and he chose to break a major rule. In the process he gave credence to everything that espn wants the nation to believe about Ohio State.

I'm glad he's serving his suspension and I'm glad he'll be where he belongs when he re-joins the team: 3rd or 4th string. I for one thought he should be thrown off the team, but that's why I'm not the coach.

He knowingly broke the rules that ALL players have to follow, and most of them do follow them. As such, I can - and do - fault him. He screwed up.

I have to follow rules in my profession every day - millions of us do it.
Stop making excuses for him just because he's talented.

I heard the same excuses for MoC 2 years ago. Hopefully, Troy will learn from this episode, grow up, and show some integrity in the future.

haha yeah....... you guys act like you've never broken rules before. now thats bull shit. Yeah he was wrong. Should he have known better? hell yes he should've but saying oh I'd never do anything to risk the team is non sense. We're dihard fans who think players should do everything perfectly, but people make mistakes just like you and I. We have no Idea what its like to actually PLAY for a team like OSU or any D-1 school for that matter so we shouldn't be too quick to say "oh I'd never do that". How do you know? I know if someone said we'll keep this secret and offered me thousands of dollars I'd be in on it by just human instincts alone. I mean maybe he knew it was wrong but it was a spur of the moment thing? you just don't know so how can you say? Just leave the option open for the kid.


Now if the kid ends up coming out and being liek MoC and saying Fu@# OSU then yeah I'd like to see troy leave, but he came out said he was wrong and fully said he expects to start from scratch again. However thats still not enough?

Also about sticking up for the kid because he's talented comment.....
Troy started off the year 2nd string, and I've been a true fan and honestly wanted to see him start the whole time. I never stuck up for MoC when his shit came out and I certainly don't side with Albert Dukes. What I see is a kid who made a mistake and a mistake that is made by all d-1 players everywhere in this nation. Its just he got caught, and if you wanna punish anyone punish Boosters.

That says a lot.

It's drilled into these kids what the consequences are for taking money from boosters. If they choose to do it, then they are responsible for what happens.

Troy Smith is responsible for the black eye that the team/university has gotten. If we take your point to an extreme, then why should a man who kills his wife's lover go to jail? He was acting out of passion and rage. Those are human instincts that are difficult to ignore and it's a "spur of the moment thing."

I understand that this is an extreme example, but taking money from a booster is the equivalent of NCAA murder. There aren't many more serious offenses in the eyes of the NCAA, right?

I never said anything about not breaking rules, it's just that no one ever gave me a pass because of my time in the 40, or my ability to throw a football.

Who said it wasn't "enough"? I'm glad he owned up to it, and I hope he learns from it but I'm not going to just act like nothing happened. He screwed up, and now he needs to prove himself, again. Hopefully, he will.

It takes two to tango. The booster was clearly wrong for offering, but Smith was also wrong for accepting. I'm not saying he deserves the freakin death penalty, just spare me the notion that he didn't do anything wrong, because "everyone does it" or would do it. That's BS. Acknowledge his actions, accept the consequences and support him if/when he returns.

i never said i dont break rules or make mistakes. but i know i wouldnt take any money if i was an athlete. dont tell me i dont know how i would react in that situation because i already know. i was raised correctly. i wouldnt take the money.

Guys, Troy screwed up. He knows it, he admitted it (unlike some others), and he is serving out the consequences. Think about it, these kids get 4 years of playing the game, Troy's only got 2 left. In that time they have to develop into the best "product" they can be to interest the NFL. Not to mention they really do love the game. Having to sit out the bowl game and the the opener against Miami is a huge deal. As it is, he's at a distinct disadvantage against JZ as the season opens. And he's certainly shown remorse. Me thinks he won't be making that mistake again. I think we can be a little forgiving here. (And don't forget that his indiscretion did happen long before ESPiN brought out the nukes). Its easy for me to say now that I wouldn't have pulled a similiar stunt, but back in college? I did a lot of bad shit back then.

When his suspension is over, I hope he is given an honest shot at getting the job back. I want the QB on the field who can do the best job. As for my opinion on who that is, yeah, I think its probably Troy. Let's face it, JT's offense gets a little conservative, just a little. We have to have the mobile QB to open it up. Troy adds a completely new dimension (I think scUM would agree). CK's mobility was a big reason we won the NC. Plus Troy's arm is every bit as good (I think better) than JZ's. Last season was looking pretty sick, and Troy helped rally that team into the winners that they finished as.

But regardless of who's in there, this season should be a helluva ride!!

Troy Smith Punishment

Just gotta jump in with my 2 cents.

Troy didn't just break a rule, he broke a big rule.

The biggest part of this is the "when" he broke the rule. OSU had already been through round 1 with #13 publicly on improper benefits (car & money) before he committed the infraction - so in my book, Troy has deeply failed himself along with his teammates & coaches.

If I was dishing out the penalties it would be harsher than the NCAA mandated formula, probably double the 2.4 game suspension. I think penalties have to fit the infractions and in this case Troy should bear more responsibility because of the "timing" of his infraction.

Gee, if only Troy Smith would jump in and tell us why and what and what for so all the opinions can be relieved....???.....TS made a kid's mistake- He could have asked his family for the money and took the embarassment that would have come with it and this would not be an issue here. He could have made #13 be a man and pay his own freakin bill....TS is at fault.After Miami we will see who is who, and I am waiting to see all the bandwagoners appear if TS starts thereafter and does in fact lead us to the promised land again. If JZ rises we will place TS in the footnotes of tOSU football history.

I don't really think that we are going to sort anything out in this thread. Smith used very poor judgement, both in accepting money from a booster and in the timing of when he took it. He hurt himself, the team and the University. One can feel some sympathy for the motivation of his actions; but he knew his actions were wrong and his actions tells us a lot about his character at the time, a time when he was heavily influenced by Clarett.

What we have to ask ourselves is this: Can Smith change? Can this young man pay his penance, learn from this experience, and resume his duties on the football team with the respect of the team he hopes to lead? Can we forgive and move on?

I understand everyone's continued anger and feel it sometimes myself. I think OSU should set a higher standard than the NCAA and put a rule in place that anyone who does this in the future is kicked off the team, as I wrote in another thread.

But my righteous indignation is tempered by knowledge that the holy books of every religion tell us that we must not judge one another but rather leave judgement to God. Another common thread is that we are spiritual beings having a temporary experience in this world so that we can learn and develop divine qualities. I have found these threads even in the most ancient African religions.

Jim Tressel alone must ultimately decide as to whether Smith has learned from this experience and is qualified to quarterback the Buckeyes. Things are very well aligned for a run at a national championship and he will not want to take that decision lightly.

So, even if I am extremely disappointed in Smith, I know that it is not for me to judge him and that the person who must decide if he plays has the very same goal that I do, a national championship for the team.

As for Justin Zwick, he came to Ohio State with such fanfare that it is not surprising that he might consider leaving if he is not first string. He now has a golden opportunity, a second chance that most people don't get in life, to show us all by his play and conditioning that he deserves it.

But Zwick must realize that this is not about personalities, it's about championships. No more shoulder or hamstring injuries or any other excuses to explain his lack of mobility. If his game cannot rise to the level of Smith's, then he doesn't deserve to play first string. If that means he chooses to leave, then I think he must choose to do what he thinks is best for himself.

who is questioning TS's ability? all i was doing was calling bullshit on the poster who said we all wouldve taken the money. i hope TS can come back and be the starter again.

How many times does this have to be said? Smith took the money LONG before any of this new bullshit started with Clarett. Smith took the money in the spring. This was before he was the starting QB, before he took his first snap of the year, hell it was probably before the spring game. So I don't wanna hear about the timing of the incident. Was it wrong of him to take the money? Yes. I think it was just a coincidence that this came out at the same time everything else did, and it is probably a result of OSU looking harder into booster relations (wbb, mbb, fb, whatever else) and we will probably hear about more of these kinds of things.
