QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

Dominated at Texas in a matchup of #1 vs 2. Won the most hyped OSU Mich game ever the same season in another 1 vs 2... just to name a couple games

Edit: The BCS championship game against Florida was a terrible team performance and i don't blame troy for the loss at all

He bears his share of the load for that one, no more, no less. The team was flat and the game plan, particularly on offense, was ill-conceived.

I hope Troy does well in Montreal.

Smith prepares for Act II

It'll be interesting to see what Als' rookie QB Troy Smith can do for an encore this weekend, against Hamilton.

Fresh off his three-touchdown performance last Sunday, against Hamilton, everyone continues to be enraptured with Troy Smith, the Alouettes' rookie quarterback.

Smith, the former Heisman Trophy winner who was making his first start with Montreal, led the Als to a convincing 36-5 victory over the Tiger-Cats, although he completed only 17 of 35 passes. Those 17 completions, however, generated 247 yards.

But of more significance, Smith didn't put his team into any trouble with interceptions or glaring rookie mistakes. While Smith might be a CFL neophyte, he has started in the NFL, with Baltimore and San Francisco.

"You're talking about a guy who has played at a high level," general manager and head coach Jim Popp said. "A Heisman Trophy winner doesn't happen by fluke. He started in the NFL. We have to realize that. He made a number of starts. At San Francisco, he started five games and won three. He knows how to manage a game.

"He made some wrong reads against Hamilton," Popp continued. "He knows what he did right and wrong. He can improve. But he got through the game without a turnover. Did I expect there would be a turnover or two? I did. It's great that it didn't happen."

Week 18 Build-Up: Troy Smith

as an Alouettes season-ticket holder, I am very keen to see this season end on an up note;
much of it was spent easing out CFL career passing leader QB Anthony Calvillo after a 20-year career ... time to pass the torch, and I hope Troy can catch it

anyway, the early book on Week 18 CFL matchups:

Montreal Alouettes (7-9) at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (8-8) Saturday, 1 p.m. (EDT)

After stringing together a pair of impact victories over archrival Toronto, the Ticats crumbled last weekend against a hot Montreal defence. Playing host to a rematch this week in Guelph, Ont., presents Hamilton’s biggest chance to secure at least second place in the East and remain in contention for a shot at the division title. But look out for the Alouettes, who had a surprisingly sensational debut from QB Troy Smith last week. The 2006 Heisman Trophy winner as the most outstanding player in U.S. college football, Smith is looking to show he can be the new man in Montreal. The Als are no doubt inspired by the boost and ready for a late-season fight to land themselves a home playoff game, along with some vindication for a rocky start to the year.

The pick: Hamilton

Montreal started the season poorly, struggling with injuries or shaky play from its quarterbacks, but is now thundering to the finish line. Pivot Troy Smith made his first CFL start last week, completing 17 of 35 passes for 247 yards and three touchdowns.

“He can extend the plays, he has a strong live arm and made a lot of big plays for them, but it’s not about him, it’s about us not settling,” Ticats linebacker Brandon Isaac said. “We won two games against Toronto and then came out like we made it. Hopefully, that’s not the case on Saturday, and we can win a very important ball game. I’m going to get to [Smith] a few times, I just know it.”

Toronto clinched the East division with a 36-21 victory over Winnipeg on Thursday, along with the bye to the East final, where they will eventually meet either Montreal or Hamilton at Rogers Centre on Nov. 17.

amazing
... when I lived in NYC in the 1990s, the only CFL game I could ever see on TV was the once-a-year Grey Cup game, usually on SportsChannel or some such....
(best memory was the "Snow Bowl" Grey Cup game in about 1996 in Winnipeg, a time when Gretzky and John Candy owned the Toronto Argos and showcased Rocket Ishmail there)

but that was a US TV regression from the 1980s, when the early, startup ESPN had no serious programmng, and so it filled up empty hours with the CFL.
During the Warren Moon-Doug Flutie era, Chris Berman became a good-humored CFL booster -- which he remains today with his occasional callouts to Canadian games-- most recently his all-French call of the Alouettes Cup-winning scoring drive.... They are gonna go ALL THE WAY!

kinda neat

the old Baltimore Stallions were a CFL team in 1990s when it expanded to US , but in 1996 the Stallions failed, moved back to Montreal and relaunched the Alouettes franchise,
weirdly, there is still a group of diehard Baltimore fans who travel up to Canada every year for the Grey Cup

back to the subject, Troy Smith and todays game
http://www.montrealgazette.com/sports/football/montreal-alouettes/pivot Smith used handling pressure/9085388/story.html

The pressure won’t affect Smith, or at least it shouldn’t. He has handled pressure from the time he arrived at Ohio State, from the time he won the Heisman, given to the NCAA’s top player, in 2006. He knows how to deal with it.

“Sometimes, things happen the exact way you want them to. Other times, it’s a humbling situation,” Smith said on Friday. “Our preparation is our salvation as quarterbacks.

“Life has a very, very unique way of humbling you. When you start to read your newspaper clippings, that’s when things go wrong,” he added. “The only thing that’s my saving grace is Netflix and my playbook.

“I did see a couple of nice pictures,” Smith concluded, not at all sheepishly. “The pictures looked good.”

The Als won’t necessarily sink or swim with Smith. Anthony Calvillo won’t play again this season — if at all — suffering the effects of post-concussion syndrome. Should Smith falter, it shouldn’t be forgotten both Josh Neiswander and rookie Tanner Marsh are waiting in the wings, Montreal having won with both pivots.

One point of contention, they didn't fail. When the Browns were stolen from Cleveland, the owner moved the franchise to Montreal to become the Alouettes and eventually sold the team entirely.
