QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

They benched Troy after the INT. Put the clown back in, watched him throw 2 more picks, and lost by 7.

It's one thing for Troy to sit behind the all time leading passer, but he's injured. Some clown named Neiswander from Angelo State is playing ahead of him.

Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith spends last football days in CFL, holding spot Tim Tebow doesn't want

MONTREAL – Deep inside an old stadium, on top of a hill, in another country, Troy Smith couldn't see his locker. He knew the wooden cubicle, where he dropped his clothes hours before his Montreal Alouettes lost a football game to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. But the game had been over for a long time now, and because the CFL is not the NFL or even the Big Ten, accommodations aren't what he might expect. The athletic trainers needed to store medical equipment, so they left in front of Smith's locker.

Troy Smith's plans after he's done in the CFL: A return to Ohio State. (Facebook via Montreal Alouettes)

Not that many years ago, Smith held college football in his hand. He wore a charcoal three-piece suit with a tie in Ohio State colors and clutched the Heisman Tro phy. But on Monday afternoon, that New York night in 2006 seemed like it was from another lifetime. He stepped around the medical equipment and slowly began to pull off the uniform he must have never thought he'd wear in those heady days of conference titles and a national championship game.

"It's another chance," he said. "It's humbling. It's a blessing and I'm having fun."

He laughed.

He got his first real chance to play in this strange new league on Monday. Alouettes coach Jim Popp threw him into a game that was quickly falling away in the second quarter and he led Montreal to a touchdown. The scoring pass was a bullet into the chest of receiver S.J. Green, who did everything to hold onto the ball as he fell over the goal line.

In the next possession, Smith was hit as he threw, the ball wobbled hopelessly into the arms of a Winnipeg defender and Smith's day was essentially done.

Later, as he sat on the cubicle's bench pulling off his pads, the interception lingered, leaving him shaking his head.

"What's that?" a teammate asked glancing at him.

"That interception I threw," Smith said. "I wish I could have it back."

The man nodded. Smith pulled off his jersey, revealing a black T-shirt with the Ohio State logo on the chest. The football memories after college have not been great. The Baltimore Ravens briefly gave him a shot before turning to Joe Flacco. He had a brief glorious run in San Francisco until he was benched for Alex Smith. The UFL's Omaha Nighthawks barely gave him a chance and the Pittsburgh Steelers cut him before training camp in 2012.

MONTREAL - The Montreal Alouettes' starting quarterback carousel will pick up another rider to begin a back-to-back set against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Troy Smith will become Montreal's fourth starter at the position this season when the Alouettes host Hamilton on Sunday at Percival-Molson Stadium.

Smith, the 2006 Heisman Trophy winner in his senior year with Ohio State, signed a two-year deal with Montreal on Aug. 14. Five days later, three-time CFL Most Outstanding Player winner Anthony Calvillo suffered what proved to be a season-ending concussion.

Josh Neiswander and Tanner Marsh have started for the Alouettes since the CFL's all-time passing leader went down. Smith, who made his Montreal debut on Sept. 15, has appeared in five games.

"There's no question when (Smith) first came up here it was to take it very slowly and we didn't know if he would get on the field," Alouettes GM and coach Jim Popp said on Friday. "But with the injuries that have mounted at that position and he was thrown in there and had to learn more and to be in position to play, he's gotten more and more comfortable, he's more ready to go."

"We're very comfortable with him, and though he may not know 100 per cent of the playbook, I'm not sure if any of our quarterbacks know 100 per cent of our playbook right now."

Graham Hughes/The Canadian PressThe third-place Alouettes (7-9) are hoping to overtake Hamilton (8-8) for second place in the East Division and the right to play host to a playoff game. The teams meet again on Saturday in Guelph, Ont.
MONTREAL — The Montreal Alouettes’ quarterback carousel has taken a promising turn with 2006 Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith.
The former Ohio State star who only joined the Alouettes in August threw three touchdown passes in his first CFL start as Montreal downed the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 36-5 to tighten the race for playoff positions on Sunday afternoon.

“It’s been cool,” Smith said of his quick adaptation to 12-man football. “My teammates have helped me out tremendously.

“The adaptation is definitely still going on. I’m trying day in and day out to get things down pat. It’s been fun.”

The team announced this week that CFL all-time passing leader Anthony Calvillo, who has been out since August with a concussion, will not return this season. That made finding a starter to finish out the campaign and take Montreal into the playoffs has been a priority.

Tanner Marsh had a good stretch but then faltered, as did Josh Neiswander.

Now it is Smith’s turn, and he passed the first test by completing 17 of 35 passes for 247 yards, three TDs and no interceptions.

“He did a great job,” said coach Jim Popp. “I don’t know if he was nervous.

“We didn’t run everything right. It’s great to be able to take what we did today and improve on it. We know there’s a lot of upside to what we’re doing. We were moving the ball and scoring and we got over that 30-point mark like we said we needed to do.”

Hi Buckskin, thanks for keeping this subject rolling;

.... Montreal native here, a McGill U grad and an Alouettes season-ticket holder.

Troy Smith was sensational yesterday.
As one caller to talk radio said: Tim Tebow can cancel his passport application now.

One online comment I liked:
What an arm Troy Smith has!! He knows football. Picture perfect passing. Made for the larger CFL field with a cannon arm like he has. Intelligent. Even exudes athleticism handing the ball off, he doesn't do it like most QBs, he MOVES. A.J. Green and Arland Bruce, both magnificent receivers, will have a lot of fun with Smith around. He changes the East picture instantly. How the Als keep bringing in talent like this is amazing. Sutton was great, too. They keep finding terrific RBs. The whole Alouettes team was pumped and playing at an elite level.

More later as the season unfolds,
Dave in Montreal

I really think so, too; Troy should prosper up here

there have been Heisman winners come to Canada, such as Doug Flutie, who fit like a glove, and of course in the 1970s Johnny Rodgers of Nebraska was a perfect match for Montreal, with his fast game, not to mention his fast life -- limos, fur coats and love of nightlife , making him a huge fan favorite
