QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

I'm on board simply because he's one of the best Buckeyes in history. But at some point it can't be he "got fucked" or "got screwed" over and over again. Maybe his game just didn't translate well to the NFL? That year in Baltimore where he got severely ill really set him back. Had he started that year, who knows?

I hope he gets another chance and something happens for him. That would be great considering how few NFL starting QBs we've had over the years, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Troy Smith learned important lessons about life from Jim Tressel. Forgetting Tressel's own discretions in the tattoo debacle, he showed tremendous commitment to helping players learn lessons about life and how it should be lived.

Perhaps Smith's game did not translate well to the NFL. Perhaps he's a bit short or he has not had that lucky break. Whatever.

Adversity reveals character and it certainly seems like he has that in spades. His gift may be that he can become a great coach and developer of young men from circumstances much like his own.

If he does, it will be a tremendous accomplishment.

This Week in Heisman History: Troy Smith leads No. 1 Ohio State over No. 2 Michigan
By Chris Huston | Blogger/Heisman Pundit
November 16, 2012

Every time that the Ohio State Buckeyes and Michigan Wolverines meet, it's very important.

But in 2006? That was a special year.

For the first time in the history of the fabled rivalry, the teams came into the game undefeated and ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the country.

But it wasn't just a berth in the national title game that was at stake. Also in play was the Heisman Trophy, with Buckeyes quarterback Troy Smith the front-runner and Wolverines tailback Mike Hart one of the leading challengers.

Smith's status as the leader in the Heisman race was not preordained. He came to Ohio State as perhaps his school's least-heralded signee from the recruiting class of 2002. But the hard-working and athletic Smith became a part-time starter by his sophomore year and then, as a junior, he led the Buckeyes to a 10-2 record and a win over Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl.

As a result, Smith entered 2006 among the leading candidates for the Heisman. Ohio State started out as preseason No. 1 and stayed there thanks to the exploits of Smith, who helped vanquish all challengers to his team's throne while throwing for 2,191 yards with 26 touchdowns and just four interceptions. He also displayed timely scrambling ability and impeccable leadership skills in leading his team to an 11-0 mark. As a result, all Smith needed to do to clinch the Heisman was to lead his team to one more win against its hated rival.

Troy Smith lends a hand on Pro Day
March, 8, 2013
By Austin Ward | ESPN.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The deep balls carried easily down the field.

The passes to the sideline arrived crisply, and pretty much everything over the middle was on the money.

Former Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Troy Smith returned to Ohio State to help out with the Buckeyes' Pro Day.

None of the 36 scouts at Ohio State on Friday morning were there to watch Troy Smith work, but six years after going through his own Pro Day, the former Heisman Trophy winner still put on a show for them anyway.

"That wasn't for me, though," a sweating Smith said as he walked off the field at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. "That was for Jake Stoneburner, that was for those guys. Anything the Buckeyes need in general around here, I'm at their leisure. Any which way we're going to work, I'm going to help.

"You know, over the years I've learned [a writer's talent] is media stuff. I can roll out of bed and throw spirals, what can I say?"

Ohio State’s 2006 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback, Troy Smith, didn’t show up at the Buckeyes’ pro day yesterday intent on stealing the show. It just worked out that way.
He was there to throw passes to Buckeyes players who needed to display their route-running and catching skills to the 36 scouts representing 28 NFL teams. Smith, who now works for the Ohio State athletic department in a variety of outreach programs, especially had an interest in seeing tight end Jake Stoneburner do well, since they had been working together in preparation.
“Coach Tress (former OSU coach Jim Tressel) was the one who suggested I hit up Troy, so I did,” Stoneburner said. “I can see why he won the Heisman. I can see why he was a captain. He motivated me better than anyone I’ve ever seen. Having him out there certainly made me look better, and I think he was more happy for me than I was for myself.”
But what stoked onlookers was the crispness of Smith’s passes, especially on the rainbow deep throws that flirted with the roof girders of the Woody Hayes Athletic Center before settling softly in receivers’ hands.
“I can roll out of bed and throw spirals, what can I say,” Smith said, laughing.
His efforts were enough to cause a couple of scouts to converse with him afterward. He was drafted by Baltimore in 2007, wound up with San Francisco in 2010, with Omaha of the United Football League in 2011 and was on the offseason roster with Pittsburgh in 2012 before getting cut prior to preseason camp. That’s when he took the Ohio State job.
Would he be interested in an NFL comeback?
“I’ve always loved the Cleveland Browns, but I love the Buckeyes even more, I love Columbus even more,” Smith said. “The opportunity these guys have given me around here, it doesn’t come often, and I have to cultivate it. But you never know. I’ve always loved the Cleveland Browns.”
At 28, he is a year younger than Brandon Weeden, the Browns’ rookie quarterback last season. But is Smith still capable?
“Absolutely.” Stoneburner said. “I think you guys saw that today. I mean, that guy is incredible. I was running fast as I can 40 yards down the field, and I didn’t have to take one single less stride. He hit me right in stride. I absolutely believe he could be in the NFL, and I think he believes it, too.“He probably made an impression, because he looked flawless out there.”

Troy Smith/QB: The former Buckeye was the practice quarterback today and by all accounts looked solid. As we posted earlier, he told people he’s ready “to move on to the next phase of his life,” but is more than happy to give pro-football another try “if I get a call from an NFL team”
