QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

I cannot believe this board... do you not realize you are agreeing wth Tibor? That alone should be cause for reflecting on your position on this or any issue.

The majority of people responding to this thread have tried and convicted Smith of being selfish, stupid, etc.

Isn't it a good thing for a kid to help at a camp?
Isn't it a good thing for our (maybe) starting QB to want to improve his game?

How exactly was that selfish?

I hope it turns out that there is no violation here... class was cancelled that day, etc. so you hypocrites can enjoy the season feeling guilty every time you cheer for Troy. Even if this was a violation... do you think the NCAA can effectively discriminate against OSU because we are on a quarter system?

Give me a break... if this is really a big deal, it's a big deal because of stupid bureaucrats and overreacting "fans", not Troy's actions.

Believe it or not, I was in the EXACT same position but with a soccer camp. And at UGA we had a quarter system as well...at least when I attended.

I faced the exact same problem because there was a soccer camp that was timed for kids and schools on the semester system. I could NOT attend as an assistant instructor because I would have missed class. I was pissed but I understood.

However, here's the key. This was many years ago and this was ONLY soccer but the compliance officer was very clear and it was a no-brainer. I am not going to make any assumptions about this sitiuation but I think we have a problem.

Dude I have No F'ing clue...BUT I do know this...!!!

So Hayn, you would know. Don't these things have to be coordinated through the SID and coach before he can get approval to attend/help?
The NCAA is FUCKED IN THE HEAD for one! And their rules/regulations/bylaws are about 6 inches thick! There is no way any athlete can know all the rules! I would've done the same thing Troy did if given the chance to work the camp without thinking twice about it. You can always catch up on the classwork! Just b/c OSU is on quarters and the other QB's schools weren't he "can't" attend/help do a service by going to the camp??? To me that seems like it's a technicality and in a sense "Unfair" to Troy in respect to the other QB's being able to attend. Like I said, the NCAA is FUCKED UP!

I still think Jeremy Bloom (CU) got CORNHOLED by the NCAA too!!!

This is disgusting...I need to go to bed and the NCAA needs to get THEIR HEAD OUT OF THEIR ASSES as do the WACKOS on this board ridiculing Troy!

Well... I thought I read the whole thread... so if this is old information... then I apologize.

Per Tibor's article...

The Camp was Thursday June Second and Friday June Third.

The last regularly scheduled class at OSU was June Third (Finals being starting the 6th... so not an issue.)

The rule says... just liek Porter's article that the Student Athlete may participate, Provided "The Student Athlete does not miss class."

SO the question... (Other than the 'written permission' caveat... which I hope was folowed) is whether he had class scheduled on those two days...

Also... Tibs.. FWIW... the event must also meet this requirement... "All moneys derived from the activity or project go directly to the member institution, member
conference or the charitable, educational or nonprofit agency" So... at some level his volunteering could be considered philanthropic... :wink2:

nice that the article does not mention when TS's last day of class was or if there's any evidence of permission being granted. espn just offered this journalist a job.

The reporter might not have known all of that information but what are the chances that Smith didn't have class Thursday or Friday the final week of classes? I'm not passing judgement, just stating facts. It will be intersting to see what the real story was in the near future.

troy smith is the first scholarship athlete/student to ever cut a class. you are laughable.

what does that have to do with refuting the ridiculous notion that this was "charity work"

Personally, I could care less if Troy skips classes. But he has to realize that the microscope will be on him. Being a part of a public event where people can trace his steps is just stupid. At least just sit at home on the couch and watch Ren and Stimpy or something.

I wonder how many of us would go out of town 3-4 days before finals. No doubt, Troy's classes are quite tough.

LR,

your exceptions under rule 12.5.1.1.1 only mention promotional activities related to a competitive event - it only refers to stipulations around a competitive event of some kind. (PanAm games, Olympics, etc.)

I hope this does not mean that there are no exceptions for charitable, or volunteer work like TS participated in.
I wonder how the NCAA came up with the '100 mile rule' anyway - doesn't seem to make sense. But then again, many of their rules only seem to be there to justify the existence of the NCAA, anyway.
