QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

the job is Zwick's to lose this season.
I agree.

I don't think the situation this coming spring will be any different than last spring, it will be Zwick's job to lose and it is that simple. Unless Zwick struggles against Miami (OH), I seriously doubt that Troy will see any playing time against Texas and he probably won't start until Zwick struggles.

I cannot imagine a scenario where Boeckman gets on the field before Zwick or Smith, its not going to happen next year.

I should have been more thorough in my explanation. I think Zwick had a lot of things working against him that Smith did not have. If it is midseason 2004 there's no question, Zwick is out Smith is in. The complexity of having a suspension, perhaps some distrust of smith (moreso among players than coaches), having to turn around and play so many tough games so soon (which means not having a QB controversy if at all possible), and so forth make a strong case for Zwick.

I guess I still feel like he played scared in a lot of ways, and I'm holding that against him too much. I will be cheering for him 100% if he trots onto the field vs. Texas. Actually, I'm glad we're playing them and not Iowa in the 2nd game. I feel like Iowa is going to be a much tougher game. And if indeed Zwick does falter, we will have time to bring in TS or TB before our 4th game against Iowa.

If Zwick walks onto the field, its because his early season jitters are behind him and he is ready to lead this team. We have not seen much of Zwick since he was benched, except a gutsy performance in the Alamo bowl (i'm not ready to call it a good passing performance, but rather one that shows he has a lot of heart and leadership). And next year's defense will carry teh team in ways it was too immature to do so in the early part of 04 (yes I remember NC State, but I also remember Iowa).

just watched a bunch of film of smith and zwick from this past season....

and...if i were coach tressel i would have troy on a 10pm curfew for the rest of his career and have someone shadow him wherever he goes...

smith is simply a dynamic player that performs on the field at a level that is beyond imagination....

the things smith did against michigan were unbelievable....

This is just one opinion, and I know that we've had a few dozen or so of these threads -- Troy won the starting job last year, and nothing has changed. Yes, he was suspended for the bowl game and is probably suspended for the Miami game, but he's still the #1 QB.

The guy trotting out on the field to face Texas will be Troy Smith, presuming the NCAA reinstates him for that game. Zwick did a great job in the Alamo Bowl, and will probably play well against Miami, but he's not the best QB on the team.

The overblown "trust" issue and everything else will get worked out in the off-season. TS can see the path that his old friend MoC went down, and he's a smart kid. He isn't going to want anything to do with that.

The other day Clarett stated to the effect that on a scale of 1 to 10, his relationship with Troy is a 12. As far as being a far superior QB to Zwick based on last season's performance, Troy really tore it up against Indiana, Mich St, Purdue, and Penn St. Indiana DB dropped a pick 6, Mich St LB dropped a pick 6, Purdue had him to the point that he didn't know if he was coming or going, and he did squat against Penn St. Maybe I watched the wrong game films.

So long as it isn't Ernest Shazor, I think that strategy just might work. :scum4:

There's a good possibility that you did. You know that arm strength that everyone was talking about when comparing Smith and Zwick? If you slow down the film you can almost see the ball before it hits the DB's hands against Indiana. Was it a well advised throw? No. But don't give me that pick six nonsense. What about the picks that Zwick actually did throw? If a whole bunch of things happened differently then we would've gone undefeated, or maybe we would have had a losing season. Everyone's so caught up in woulda coulda shoulda, that they tend to forget what actually happened.

Lightning, I know that a guy with a "screw Michigan" avatar must have seen that game more than once.

Seriously, Troy screwed up taking booster money. He has shitty taste in friends. If his screw ups keep him off the field, then so be it. If fans hate him for it, so be it. Personally, as a fan I am not crazy about his actions, and if another QB on this team can be as or more effective, then I'm all for it.

Leaving his biggest and best game out of any talent evaluation makes that analysis incomplete at best, and fraudulent at worst, though. When he's on, as in the scUM game, he's not only the best QB on the team (that we have seen to this point), he's the best returning QB in the conference. He's shown once that he can be a big game QB, and Texas is a very big game. It would not shock me one bit if he starts.

Yes, I'm seperating the talent from the person. I would hope that this Spring we see some serious contrition from him and a dedication to representing himself and the university well. One MoC in a lifetime is one too damned many.

I have to agree. I don't know a lot about foot ball except that I like to watch it, but if I was the coach, the job would be Troy's as soon as he could play. TS had some mistakes just like JZ did, but he handled the blitz and pressure much better than JZ did. If you play great teams (Iowa, and Texas) then they will pressure your QB, so that would be very important to me in determining who starts.

First person that I've ever seen admit that. Green chicklets for you.

Troy Smith decision per the Ozone

March 28, 2005 2:05 PM

Football: The NCAA has ruled on OSU quarterback Troy Smith.

Jim Tressel said today that Ohio State has been informed by the NCAA that Troy Smith will be required to sit out the season opener against Miami of Ohio, but will be reinstated after sitting out one game provided he makes restitution for the money he received from a booster. Smith will practice with the Buckeyes this spring and next fall.

In other personnel related news, Tressel also indicated that both Brandon Maupin and Albert Dukes will participate in spring drills and both are now back with the team. Neither Dukes nor Maupin were in school last quarter due to off-field problems, but both are in school now and participating fully in football activities.

The news is not as good for corner back E. J. Underwood. Underwood will not take part in spring drills due to ongoing "classroom issues", according to Tressel.

EJ seems to be a living teatament to the saying: Youth is wated on the young"

If only he knew how many kids would kill to have had just a little more athletic ability and been given the chance that he was given - maybe he would appreciate it more.

I don't know about the kids, but this 31 year old would eat dog poo just to run out on the field one time dressed in scarlet and gray!
