QB Troy Smith's problems could affect his ability to start at Ohio State, and they have nothing to do with the potential ramifications of accepting money from a booster. They have everything to do with trust and accountability. Can Ohio State trust that Smith--who has a history of off-field issues, including a disorderly conduct charge in 2002--will steer clear of trouble? Can the Buckeyes pin their offense on a player who likely is one misstep from ending his career? Many believed Smith should have started ahead of Justin Zwick at the beginning of last season and that Smith's off-field problems swayed coach Jim Tressel toward Zwick. It could be the same case this fall, especially if Zwick makes strides during spring practice. . . .

Alabama is determined to find a suitable backup for QB Brodie Croyle, even if it means developing a walk-on. Spencer Pennington, who has left the team to concentrate on playing baseball full time, was serviceable as Croyle's backup last year, but had he played more efficiently, the Tide could have had eight or more wins. The team had hopes for Miami transfer Marc Guillon, but he hasn't recovered sufficiently from a back injury, and there are concerns it could be a long-term issue. That leaves Alabama with one scholarship quarterback (John Parker Wilson) and walk-on Adam Thrash competing in spring drills. Croyle will not participate in contact drills while rehabbing a reconstructed knee. . . .

The NCAA's new academic measures will ensure at least one thing: Teams will be more selective when signing academically marginal players. The danger of losing scholarships because of players who fail to graduate could impact multiple seasons. One elite player--who might or might not pan out--isn't worth the risk. "You're not going to totally eliminate marginal kids from your sights," says one Pac-10 coach. "A few years ago, you could take five or so chances every year. You can't do that anymore.". . .

Fresno State coach Pat Hill says this team should be his best ever at the school--even better than the David Carr-led 2001 team. The Bulldogs will need all that talent with a nonconference schedule that includes Southern California, Oregon and Toledo. By the way, Hill--who votes in the coaches poll--says he'll start his team out "around No. 15 or so" in this year's preseason poll. . . .

Odds are he'll lead the nation in a few passing categories by the end of this season. Last fall, Gill was a junior college player hoping to land a Division I scholarship. By the end of April, he'll likely be New Mexico State's starting quarterback. New Aggies coach Hal Mumme calls Gill "the perfect quarterback for New Mexico State." Translation: Gill will throw it about 50 to 60 times per game this fall. . . . New Auburn coordinator David Gibbs says he won't change much about the system that produced one of the nation's best defenses in 2004. There will, however, be one fundamental tweak: Auburn will play more bump-and-run and press coverage than it did last season. Pressure from DEs Stanley McClover and Quentin Groves will allow CBs Montavis Pitts and David Irons to play aggressively. . . . Arizona State's recent success with junior college players on defense has the staff thinking as many as three JC transfers from last month's recruiting class could start this fall, including LB Beau Manutai, S Zach Catanese and CB Keno Walter-White.

His comments are not out of line, the question is wether the staff can trust Troy again....I think we are fortunate to have Justin Zwick in the fold.

I would say we're more fortunate to have Todd Boeckman in the fold, as he is said to have some good skills and hasn't shown the same kind of emotional, "playing scared" problems that Zwick has (obviously he hasn't played, I'm merely saying I'd be more apt to try him at Miami and then default to Smith if TB isn't ready).

I agree that Tress might not trust Smith... but then again I think Tress knows that Smith is the leader of this team (that's assuming the snippet we heard from Holmes is not a more widespread attitude towards TS).

Who gives a shit about another hack opinion....?

How does anyone here know whether JT trusts Smith or not or how much?

Good God. They (sport papers) are just selling copy by stirring the crap again and again since MoC has become contrite....

buckeyefromscum= I'm with you on this. BOECKMAN IS THE MAN if smith has more trouble
Zwick is another orrville bust, another tom bolyard who was suppose to be the next art gamschlister

This year orrville had another all stater with crazy stats this year and he's going to western scum

I especially enjoyed the title Inside Dish . Is this the "Inside Dish" that Buckeye fans have been retreading since Troy's suspension happened. This schmo has probably just been reading message boards, and decided to copy and paste someone's post. :roll2:

easy, that's my alma mater your talking about, and that all stater your referring to, he's got a full ride at that d1(i know.... barely) scum school. by the way i think that hiller is a far superior athlete than zwick will ever be, i have followed them both very closely, and happen to think a lot of hiller. i am good friends with the coaches at orrville and most of them agree. have you ever seen hiller play b-ball or baseball, not too shabby. besides, zwick is not from orrville, he's from tigertown now (still lives in orrville, goes to church in orrville, lived all his life in orrville, girlfriend lives in orrville......etc) but he's from massilion, so there!

[/QUOTE]

I agree flask, I don't know how much JT trusts Troy, but it won't hold him out for the whole season. This bum should list the article as an editorial, and one without much substance. Nothing like throwing some shit on paper and acting like he knows JT personally and almost speaking for him. Not that it will ever happen but I will believe this when it comes from JT's mouth.

Agreed. Tressel in his non-disclosure style, has not established any precedent for not trusting Smith. This is a total hackjob, and on top of being total hearsay he doesn't even give us a full article of ramblings!

I think Zwick flopped earlier this season, and has much more to overcome from that than Smith does. Rather than slandering an area of football (especially since you never know who is gonna be reading this page), let's rather focus on the fact that Boeckman is supposed to be yet another talented option for buckeye football. We have come a long way from the days of Belisorry. Krenzel was one of the best tOSU QBs ever, and he had easily one of the better backups in a long time in McMullen. Now, if we go with Smith we have 1-2 guys that are very capable of stepping in if he can't cut it.

A: I'm sure Tressel and Smith have thoroughly discussed this entire situation at depth and this guy's "Inside Dish" is worth about as much as Saddam Hussein's moustache prior to his capture.

B: I love the fact that no one takes into account at all anymore that this occurred a LONG time ago now. This did not happen after the scUM game. I'm sure Troy has learned his lesson (probably pissed his pants when it all came public) and hopefully the best man will play come Texas time.

You can't put all of the blame from the three losses on Zwick. The D played bad against Northwestern. Zwick actually played well pretty much the whole game and would have won it if not for Holmes screwing up a couple times. Wiscy and Iowa had two of the best defenses in the Big 10. Neither QB would have won either of those games with the play of the O-line and WR's. Smith looked just as bad as Zwick against Iowa until they put the scrubs in at the end of the game. The whole team came a long way in the games that Smith started, it wasn't just one player making everyone better. Zwick looked good playing hurt in the bowl game. If he plays well against Miami there is no way that Smith will get his first action of the year against Texas. Unless TB comes along really fast the job is Zwick's to lose this season. Smith has screwed up enough that there is always that thought in the back of a coaches head that he might do it again.
