QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

I believe that AG or JT said that this situation does not relate to the Mo thing. I would suspect that if they are trying to maintain the appearance of institutional control, they wouldn't lie at this juncture. They wouldn't lie because the truth is going to come out soon. Lying would harm them more than telling the truth.

I know, someone's going to tell me I'm "absurd" again. I don't care. I think you CAN judge a person's guilt/motives by what they say in their own defense.

I also believe that OSU is now doing EXACTLY what you're supposed to do when you discover an NCAA violation. You self-report, and you self-impose penalties that you think are acceptable. The damn shame about this thing is that it makes people think they are guilty, when they could have avoided the whole mess by sweeping it under the rug. Again, they didn't do that. They self-reported, and self-penalized. That says to me that they are doing the right thing, not the wrong thing. Covering it up WOULD be an NCAA violation for Ohio State. Does anyone understand the difference?

During an NCAA investigation, there is a gag order placed on the University. Tressel or Geiger can't say it has connections to the NCAA investigation regardless. They can choose to say no comment or they can say it is not related. What they said today has no effect on what I am thinking right now.
You are correct saying that self imposing this is the right thing to do, but they had no choice in the matter. Had they swept this under the rug, the NCAA would most definetely find out anyways.

Again, maybe it's just the cynic coming out in me but it's easy to say to a kid 'Hey, keep it quiet. If anyone finds out about this, you are the one that's going to take the fall for it, not me, not your coach, not anyone but you. So just remember that kid, and hush up.'
yeah, you basically got it right. They look you square in the eye and say, "this is a gift from people who care. It is your responsibility not to be caught with this money or say where you got it. I don't care what you do with it just don't bring any unwanted attention to yourself."

no joke.

bukIpower: "When do we start looking at what Tressel is doing here?"

We don't. Look, I don't know how many of you went to OSU, lived on, or spent a great deal of time on campus: YOU HAVE TO HAVE INHUMAN WILLPOWER OR BE MARY POPPINS TO NOT GET IN TROUBLE ON CAMPUS. Its probably increased 1000% if you are a football player on said campus.

Its not Tressel's fault. Every OSU Coach has had and will continue to have these problems. OSU is the single largest campus in the country (or 2nd to UCLA, I'm not sure of the exact totals), and its not spread out. Its basically 25 square blocks of 18 to 22 year olds. There are more drugs, liquor, women, debauchery, and opportunity to get into trouble than anyplace in the world. And this includes Las Vegas. C, Tibbs, or someone that went there the same time that I did can back me up on this.

Now, considering how important football is in the state, imagine three times the opportunity for trouble would be available to a player as opposed to a normal student (which is considerable). Its impossible for any one man (even if he is the head football coach) to reign in 100+ of these kids. Impossible.

Don't kid yourself: this same EXACT stuff happened under Cooper. The difference is, Ohio State isn't the lovable Midwest school that teases and chokes away the National Championship every year. We won the Title, and now we're somebody the media can gain from by taking us down. You just hear about this stuff now, but it was always there.

I always laugh when Playboy or Forbes magazine lists its "Top Party Schools in America." If they only knew. You can take the last 50 winners of that honor, combine them, and they wouldn't equal the stuff that goes on at OSU. You can't blame Tressel at all.

And the bottom line is (to quote my Dad approximately 10 minutes after the scUM game was over), "Well, if there was any heat on Tressell, there ain't anymore. No Ohio State coach who's 3-1 against scUM is going anywhere." And you can book that.

So you mean to say, you have never, ever seen anyone spend outside of their means?
What we was/is wearing doesnt mean shit.
All it means is places a high amount of value on his appearence.
Really? I cared about my appearance in college as well, but didnt go around wearing $2000 worth of jewelry and clothes every day. I was lucky if I could scrape together $20 for beers on a Friday, nevermind two grand for a single outfit, and I worked and was on scholarship.

Short of him moonlighting as a brain surgeon, please explain to me where a college kid of a modest background obtains the means for decoration like this. I would love to hear that.

Man, I've thought the same thing. I've been to some of those schools and I have friends at some they mention and it's laughable, even to the ones that have been on OSU's campus a decent amount.

One school they did get right once was Dayton. I spent damn near every weekend on that campus back before they put spring break on St. Patricks Day and outlawed the number of kegs on your front porch. That place was friggin nuts. It was like a minnie OSU that covered only 8-9 square blocks. Some of the parties there were simply amazing.

Question, Goofy: Did this come to light as the result of the NCAA investigation?

And, notwithstanding the gag order, saying that it IS NOT related is a bad idea if it really IS related.
IB Tress said in the PC that they were notified of some issues last week (I am reading into it but it sounded like local merchants).
I could be way off but it doesn't sound like it had anything to do with the NCAA investigation Goofy was speaking of.

Two things from the movie "Airplane" come to mind.

1 - the Shit is about to hit the fan

2 - looks like I picked the wrong week to give up :

a - drinking
b - amphetamines
c - sniffing glue
d - all of the above

I've been to the OSU campus about 8 seperate times with the sole intention of causing trouble/getting into as much mayhem as I could. Easily done. The question, Sloops, is: Have you spent enough time on other campuses to accurately make that comparison? I know there's a little private school here in Indiana that might be one of the finest academic schools we have (DePauw). I party as hard there as I ever have. There's one festival where it's just about literally four days of wide open drunken/drugged out orgy of madness pouring out into the streets. It's like a scene from a NC-17 movie drug out over 96 hours.

I think we're making much too big of a deal out of this thing right now. I feel like asking a lot of these 'sky is falling' people 'Hey, ever seen a suspension before?'
