QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

Why would anyone draft a project QB in the second round, if their plan was to sandbag the season in an attempt to draft another QB with the #1 overall pick?

Should have used the sarcasm font. It would be ridiculous for any team to start sandbagging at the beginning of a season. I look at SF's QB situation and I see unintended suckage. SF fans keep waiting for next year then Alex Smith comes and proves he's not a #1 QB. Kapernick is definitely a project; looked like one in the draft and played like one in the preseason. Didn't his team run the Pistol?

I thought it was a more clever way of saying "SF QBs are garbage and I fully expect them to draft Luck next year".

This just proves why San Francisco is completely worthy of their record the last few years. I believe you guys are hitting the mark when you say that by cutting Troy, it gives them even a better chance for the #1 overall pick in April. It just pisses me off that it comes at the expense of Troy, who deserves better.

Although...if Troy's NFL career is over, it's time for him to start his coaching career. I believe he's got more than enough between the ears to be a VERY good college coach one day.

But as a Browns fan, I believe bringing in Troy might not be the best idea. I don't think Troy's ceiling in the NFL is any higher than McCoy's, and bringing him onto the team when we're FINALLY headed in the right directions wouldn't be right. Right now, if McCoy struggles, as a fan, I'm okay with it, because he's young, and this will be his first full season, and there's no one on the bench that I'd like to see replace him. If Troy were on the roster, that creates problems for me, and probably most Browns fans, because of the Buckeye love we have for #10. Can you imagine the cries for Troy the instant McCoy coughs up a fumble or throws a bad pick? I don't know if that's what I'd want. :(

Nighthawks sign Heisman winner Troy Smith
By Steven Pivovar
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

The Omaha Nighthawks added another Heisman Trophy winner to its quarterback competition Thursday when Troy Smith signed to play for the United Football League team.

A person with knowledge of the situation confirmed that Smith, who won the 2006 Heisman while playing for Ohio State, signed with the team. Smith was expected to participate in his first practice Thursday afternoon.

Smith joins Eric Crouch, the 2001 Heisman winner from Nebraska, in the competition for the starting quarterback job. Omaha already had four quarterbacks in camp with Crouch, Jeremiah Masoli, Daryll Clark and D.J. Shockley.

The Baltimore Ravens drafted Smith in the fifth round of the 2007 NFL draft, and he played in 14 games over a three-season period with the team. The Ravens released Smith before the start of last season, and he hooked on with the San Francisco 49ers.

He started the six games in which he played for the 49ers last season, completing 50 percent of his passes for 1,176 yards. San Francisco released him after the season, and he tried to hook on with another NFL team as a free agent before accepting Omaha's offer.

He was the 1st pick in the 2005 draft and they have a lot of money invested in him. If he turns out to be a "bust" (which he is so far) it make the entire organization (including scouts, front office, and coaches) look bad. He will be given every chance possible by SF to be sucessful.

Certainly, that was a valid justification in, say....2008, but that ship has sailed. He IS a total bust and the entire organization looks bad. They just need to own up to it and move on.

Not looking good for Troy to have an NFL job this year being unsigned at this point. I'm wondering if he should consider signing with a UFL team in the hopes of playing well and getting another look from the League.

Who knows, maybe he could play in a backfield with Clarett
. :wink2:

Three weeks later he's a Nighthawk. :pimp:

Former OSU star vows to work for Nighthawks QB job
By Steven Pivovar
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

Jeremiah Masoli became the odd man out in at least one aspect of the competition for the starting quarterback job with the Omaha Nighthawks.

After the team signed Troy Smith to a United Football League contract on Thursday, Masoli became the only quarterback on the Nighthawks' roster without a Heisman Trophy.

Smith laughed heartily when asked if that's something he and Eric Crouch might use to chide the rookie from Mississippi.

"We can't mess with him at all,'' Smith said. "Masoli is playing some good football right now.''

Smith, who won the Heisman in 2006 while playing for Ohio State, was on the practice field about an hour after signing his contract. He participated in Omaha's 90-minute workout at the Kroc Center in South Omaha.

"It was very, very, very hot,'' Smith said. "I wasn't expecting this. But it felt good to be out here. Jeremiah Masoli and Eric Crouch are very good quarterbacks, and I'm going to continue to learn and pick up as much as I can from those two guys.''

I wasn't aware that the 49ers cut Masoli. You'd think Troy wouldn't have any trouble beating out Crouch.

Crouch has other things going for him aside from ability - he is from Omaha and played for Nebraska. That might not matter in the NFL, but I'm guessing it helps to bring in revenue in the UFL.

Nighthawks QB Smith is content in waiting, learning
By Steven Pivovar
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

Troy Smith's change in status won't alter his approach this week as the Omaha Nighthawks prepare for Saturday's game at Sacramento.

The knee injury Eric Crouch suffered in the United Football League opener against Virginia has elevated Smith from the No. 3 quarterback with little chance to play to the No. 2 spot behind starter Jeremiah Masoli.

While offensive coordinator Bart Andrus said Masoli and Smith won't share time, as Crouch and Masoli did in the opener, Smith knows that his chances of getting off the sidelines have improved.

But for Smith, the bottom line remains the same.

"In any facet of life, I think you prepare for the worst and hope for the best,'' Smith said. "I respect every opponent, and I'm going to prepare for every opponent the same way.''
