Troy Smith takes Marc Bulger addition in stride

Ravens backup quarterback Troy Smith took some time Wednesday at Ed Reed's youth football camp at Randallstown High School to address the recent addition of Marc Bulger, who is expected to be the team's No. 2 quarterback. He seemed to take the acquisition in stride.

"I'm proud to have another teammate. He's definitely a good guy. I've been a fan of his for a while. That side of what's going on, I can't control," Smith said.

On whether he was disappointed by Bulger's signing, Smith said he looks forward to the competition among quarterbacks for their spot on the depth chart.

"Everybody gets a chance to compete, though. That's the way the game is. Even Joe [Flacco] is in competition. We all get a chance to bond together and become a great quarterback group," Smith said.

Smith downplayed recent speculation that the Philadelphia Eagles might be interested in him.

"I can't control things like that. It's just about getting better as a player and as a quarterback," he said.

Smith also addressed Ed Reed's comments from a radio interview on Tuesday.

"I definitely appreciate it, especially coming from a guy like Ed Reed," Smith said.

In the interview, Reed said that Smith was more than capable of leading the Ravens to a championship and that Bulger was ?just another guy that?s been in the league and been around."

Cameron: Determining No. 3 QB won't be difficult
With Marc Bulger taking the field for the first time Tuesday, the Ravens have begun evaluating who should be their No. 3 quarterback: Troy Smith or John Beck?

Some say it could be a tough choice, but not offensive coordinator Cam Cameron.

"It?s not as complicated as everybody thinks,? Cameron said. ?We?ve got a lot of practice left, a lot of reps in practice. You just watch every drill, watch every practice, watch through the preseason games. It usually clarifies itself and is usually pretty obvious.?

But if it isn't obvious ...

?John [Harbaugh, Ravens coach] and Ozzie [Newsome, general manager] and I, we?ll all put our heads together,? Cameron said. ?Instinctively, you?ll make the decision that you need to make to help the team win.?

There is a chance that the Ravens might cut both Smith and Beck. Starting quarterback Joe Flacco has yet to miss a game in his NFL career, and the Ravens don't need to develop a young quarterback because Flacco is entering his third season. The Ravens could use that roster spot to groom a young defensive lineman or cornerback.

He was available for what amounts to a ham sandwich earlier this year and there were no takers. The demand just isn't there. I thought Philly might be a suitor if Vick found himself in trouble again, but it appears that isn't going to happen.

As mentioned above myself, his pension depends upon how many years he stays in the league, so if you are rooting for Troy Smith's long-term financial success, being cut is not in his best interest.

Yep. I love Troy as much as the next Buckeye but I never saw him as an NFL QB, Heisman or not. I'd love to see him prove otherwise but it doesn't appear as though that is happening.

A change of scenery couldn't hurt, but no one is going to give up something for him.

I laugh at the notion of judging the potential of a player based on which teams were silly enough to pass on him.

No one wants to go through the lists and lists of second day draft picks who've made it big in the NFL.

He doesn't have a rocket arm in the NFL. He has an average one. If the third one is a big asset, go get Quinn back! :lol:

I wish he had more of a shot, but he is more of a good backup than a painfully overlooked QB.
