QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

Flacco blew goats in the playoffs. That's being gentle. I'm a believer that they picked Flacco, wanted to stick with someone and nurse them, and that person was their first round draft pick. Flacco has proven on multiple occasions that he is not a "good" quarterback, but an above average game manager. He's been around long enough now to show that he "has it" or doesn't and he folded like the POS that he is when competition got stiff in the post-season.

This is a good thing for Troy IMO. Let him get the heck out of Baltimore and try to shine elsewhere. There are a lot of organizations with older QB's, and QB's who are on their way out the door where Troy could be a better fit. Bid adieu Troy, don't be pissed and do your thing on another team.

It's a matter of fact that the best player plays. Its all about winning and if anyone in the league thought Troy would help them win by starting, then Troy would.

Simple as that.
It's a matter of fact that the player the coaches think is the best player, and/or has the best long term potential, plays. It's also a matter of fact that coaches sometimes make a mistake in this evaluation. I'm not saying Smith is the best QB on their roster - I have no idea, although I would suspect he's not. Most coaches are usually right about this, but few if any are always right.

I gotta agree with this post. Not always do they play the best QB on the roster, they pick who they think has the most potential and they play that quarterback. In fact, NFL evaluaters are frequently wrong.

Take the Chargers as a very recent example. Drew Brees has a solid year but they have Philip Rivers. Although Rivers is clearly not as good of an NFL quarterback as Brees at that point, they trade Brees away and start Rivers. This is what they do, they make a decision and they stick with it (unlike the browns). This is also what the Ravens have done.

Yes, Philip Rivers has been very good, but he is certainly not on the same level as Drew Brees. The evaluaters were wrong, and hopefully we'll see soon enough if the evaluaters at Baltimore were wrong about Troy Smith.

The Mavens just like Flacco more. Maybe it's his size, maybe it's his practice/game habits. I think Troy would have to be clearly better in practice
in order to get the chance to pass Flacco. They have played reasonably well with Flacco as the starter, that's not going to change until Flacco gets hurt or that unibrow gets in the way of his vision.

I'd like to see TS get a chance elsewhere. The problem is that the places where he would get a chance, he'd also get the piss beaten out of him.

The only reason he got the gig was because Troy was sick. Troy had the job and had beaten him. So while Flacco has numbers to back him up (numbers that could very well have been Troy's), Troy doesn't. All he has is a year of every player on his team saying he should be the starter, not Flacco.

That was during Flacco's first year and those players (not EVERY player) were quiet by the end of the season.

Flacco has proven himself in the NFL. Troy has not. It does not necessarily mean that Troy might not be better, but it is a waste of time to argue that he is given their play on the field.

Being not too far away from Baltimore, I got to watch the Ravens quite a bit last season. Flacco did not look as good down the stretch when it mattered most, when they were fighting for a playoff spot. Granted, he did not have great wide receivers at his disposal, but he did have a crop of running backs who over-performed (5th best rushing offense in the NFL) and opened up the pass game for him, in addition to a great defense that took a lot of the pressure off. Now that they have a top set of wide receivers, there will be a lot more pressure on Flacco to take his game to the next level.

I feel bad for Troy for a couple of reasons. First, he got that freak illness that took away his opportunity to be a starter the season before last. If he plays well that season, then things would be a lot different now. Second, his receivers are extraordinarily terrible when Troy is given the chance to play, whether in the preseason or regular season. Anyone who has watched Baltimore's games will understand what I'm saying. I've never seen more dropped passes, ever. Never seen anything like it.

Trent Green was supposed to start ahead of Kurt Warner once upon a time. What's the point? I'm not saying the Flacco = Warner in terms of skills or accomplishments, but at the quarterback position if you're unproven and and absent and the team wins under the direction of your replacement, you're going to lose your job.

Also, if you're an unproven quarterback that was not drafted in the first round, and your team uses a subsequent first round pick to take another QB, you're not going to be the guy. You might get to start for a little while, but you shouldn't do anything like buy a house in that city. That's just the way things work. Smith's illness just accelerated that process.

I like Troy and I wish him the best. I hope he gets to go to a team where he can get the opportunity to show what he can do. In the meantime, let's not pretend to be shocked by the way things have worked out for him in Baltimore.

T. Smith to Bills would be a win-win

News item: The Ravens signed quarterback Marc Bulger to provide a veteran backup for Joe Flacco in his third NFL season, apparently displacing former Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith.

My take: There are rumors that Smith could end up in Buffalo with a much better chance to play, which would probably be the best outcome for everybody involved.

Ravens can't expect more than a sixth-rounder for T.Smith
With the acquisition of Marc Bulger, the Ravens might try shopping deposed backup quarterback Troy Smith.

Of course, the Ravens can?t expect more than sixth-round pick in return. No team showed any interest in Smith when he could be had for a fifth-round pick as a restricted free agent.

So, there's no reason to believe a team would suddenly be willing to cough up a fourth-round pick for him.

The Ravens could end up releasing John Beck, but the best solution is moving Smith. The former Heisman Trophy winner didn?t like being a backup and probably won?t have the best attitude as the third-string quarterback.

Smith On Bulger Deal: It?s Part Of The Game
Posted by Mike Duffy on Thursday, June 24th, 2010

After the Ravens brought in two-time Pro Bowler Marc Bulger, who agreed to terms of a one-year contract this week, Troy Smith?s situation is understandably on the minds of fans and media alike.

But with Smith getting pushed further down the depth chart behind Bulger and starter Joe Flacco, he now finds himself in a battle for the No. 3 position with John Beck. Still, Smith understands that a purple jersey is no guarantee at this point.

?It?s a part of the game. The situation, there?s not much that we as players can do about it,? Smith said from Louisiana while participating in teammate Ed Reed?s youth football camp.

?The only thing that I can hold true to is becoming a better man and a better quarterback. I think Marc Bulger is a great player. I?ve always thought he was. I get a chance to learn from another great in the game, just as Joe and John [Beck] can.?

Smith?s positive attitude is noteworthy, considering it was only three years ago when his chance to seize the starting spot was derailed by a tonsil infection. Since that 2008 preseason, Flacco has risen near the top tier of NFL quarterbacks, while Smith has been a valuable No. 2.

That job is now slated to go to Bulger.

While Smith maintains his starting aspirations, he is content with the only club he?s known. To show solidarity, Smith switched agents this offseason after his first one, Ralph Cindrich, publicly lobbied for the former fifth-round draft pick to be traded, saying ?he would crawl from Baltimore right now to be able to play in Cleveland.?

?I was scrutinized not too long ago about some comments that were made, and choices and decisions were made after those comments,? the former Heisman trophy winner said. ?So obviously, I?m with the team that drafted me, and I love it.

?Playing football is always about being competitive,? said Smith. ?It?s a natural part of the game, so that?s just part of the territory. I?ve said it time and time again, my focus as a player is just getting better. I have to take advantage of that opportunity, so I?m cool with it.?
