QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

Ralph Cindrich comments on no longer representing Troy Smith

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- In the wake of Baltimore Ravens backup quarterback Troy Smith switching representation to agent Neil Cornrich, his former agent has broken his silence on the situation.

Ralph Cindrich, who previously represented Smith, told National Football Post in a telephone interview that a lengthy dispute between Smith's business advisor, Bobby George, and DeBartolo Sports and Entertainment triggered the end of his business relationship with the former Heisman Trophy winner.

Cindrich said that George sent a letter of termination to the firm on March 12. The NFL Players Association confirmed Wednesday that Smith is now represented by Cornrich.

Cindrich said that George wrote in the letter: "Troy and I have decided to part ways with DeBartolo Sports and Entertainment. Your broken promises have caused too much animosity between our organizations."

Cindrich said that he hasn't spoken to Smith about the separation, but said he has no hard feelings toward the former Ohio State star.

"Troy is a great guy," Cindrich said. "I wish whatever differences they had could have been resolved. It was very delicate. I wish Troy the best of luck."

Cindrich said he works for DeBartolo Sports on a consulting basis where he primarily negotiates contracts for the firm's clients.

Smith has expressed a desire to be traded through Cindrich, especially to his hometown Cleveland Browns but no market has materialized at this point for him.

The restricted free agent was assigned an original-round tender, a fifth-round selection.

Last month, Cindrich said that Smith "would crawl from Baltimore right now to be able to play in Cleveland.?

Instead of pursuing Smith, Browns team president Mike Holmgren acquired Seneca Wallace in a trade from the Seattle Seahawks.

Cornrich, who's the agent for Mike Vrabel and several other NFL players, also represents many high-profile coaches.

Troy Smith signs $1.101 million tenderBackup quarterback inks one-year tender

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Baltimore Ravens quarterback Troy Smith has signed his one-year, $1.101 million restricted free agent tender, a league source confirmed.

Smith was assigned an original round low tender.

The signing was first reported by Howard Balzer.

Drafted in the fifth round out of Ohio State, the former Heisman Trophy winner has been seeking a trade.

However, that hasn't materialized.

The Cleveland native had repeatedly lobbied for a trade through his former agent, Ralph Cindrich.

He recently switched representation, hiring Cleveland-based agent Neil Cornrich.

Troy could still be traded
Troy Smith | Ravens | Interested: Panthers?, Raiders?, Bills?

The last we'd heard on Troy Smith, there were possibly five teams that would make logical sense as trade suitors. The Baltimore Ravens backup QB was tendered at the original round level as an RFA, which for him equated to a fifth-round echelon. Smith switched agents earlier this offseason, and the latest update is that he's finally signed his RFA tender per Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times.

Of the teams originally cited as logical destinations, just three remain as viable options: the Buffalo Bills, Oakland Raiders (if they don't land a slightly bigger target) and Carolina Panthers. Smith had previously stated that he wanted to play for the Cleveland Browns, but it appears after their acquisition of Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace -- not to mention their likely drafting of a QB -- that Cleveland is not likely.

It's still unclear what type of return Smith would provide, but with only six draft picks total this year, the Ravens would likely listen to any legitimate offers.

Troy Smith on offseason trade request

Ravens backup quarterback Troy Smith addressed his offseason trade requests for the first time at minicamp, saying "My time will come. I love it here."

Smith's agent at the time, Ralph Cindrich, first requested a trade in December.

"There?s two things you can?t get back in this situation and that?s your relationship you form with the guys and the bond can be unbreakable," Smith said. "These guys are special to me and we?re going to do great things.?

Smith changed agents on March 23, switching to Neil Cornrich. He acknowledged that it was time for a new direction.

"I?m going into my fourth year and having an understanding a little more about what the league is about," Smith said. "Not to say that the Debartolo Group and Ralph Cindrich didn?t do a great job. I?m moving forward.?

Ravens notebook: Smith content after tumultuous offseason

OWINGS MILLS -- It has been a fairly eventful offseason for Baltimore Ravens quarterback Troy Smith, especially considering that he's a backup.

The former Heisman Trophy winner switched agents, hiring Neil Cornrich to replace Ralph Cindrich.

Smith was in the news frequently for wanting to be traded with Cindrich famously stating that the Cleveland native would crawl if he had to in order to play for the hometown Browns.

Ultimately, no trade materialized and the former Ohio State star remains with the Ravens and is expected to back up starter Joe Flacco again this year.

Although Smith badly wants to get on the field, he seems content with his status now as an insurance policy in case anything happens to Flacco.

"My time will come," Smith said Sunday as the Ravens concluded a three-day minicamp. "I love it here. There's two things you can't get back in this situation and that's your relationship you form with the guys and the bond can be unbreakable. These guys are special to me and we're going to do great things."

Smith said he was looking for a new direction from a business standpoint in switching to Cornrich, a Cleveland-based agent who also represents several coaches as well as NFL players Mike Vrabel and Adam Vinatieri.

"There's no doubt about it," Smith said. " I'm going into my fourth year and having an understanding a little more about what the league is about, not to say that the Debartolo Group and Ralph Cindrich didn't do a great job. I'm moving forward."

Signed to a one-year, $1.101 million restricted tender, the former fifth-round draft pick said he enjoyed himself during the Ravens' minicamp.

"It's always a competitive, spirited practice and definitely going out with a bang, been competing the whole time, just having a good time," Smith said.."When you've got guys like John Beck and Joe Flacco, my thought process and my learning process is going to continue and I get a chance to learn from those guys."

Smith said that hiring former Washington Redskins coach Jim Zorn as quarterbacks coach this offseason has provided a major boost to him.

"No doubt, no doubt, Jim Zorn does a great job," Smith said. "The addition of him was incredible because he's a down to earth guy who played the game, knows the game. We have a good time."

Zorn has some unconventional drills, including a game of Dodgeball where he throws pilate balls at the quarterbacks to simulate the pressure they'll face during a game.

"He definitely has brought another side of the game to us, fine-tuning a lot of lot of little things that we do. It's very, very, very different. It's pretty fun."

Troy Smith is clearly the No. 2 guy on the depth chart and based upon this weekend, deservedly so. Smith struggled a bit on the quick three step drops when throwing the X slant. A few of those throw were batted down. But when taking deeper drops, Smith threw confidently although his accuracy could use improvement. In his defense, Smith is often throwing to newer and/or less accomplished players. Familiarity improves timing which in turn improves accuracy. Smith had some pop in his throws, particularly on 25-30 yard posts to the left hash mark.

Troy Smith has his tonsils removedBackup quarterback had tonsil infection two years ago Aaron Wilson
May 18, 2010

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Baltimore Ravens backup quarterback Troy Smith is out for a few weeks after having his tonsils removed in his hometown of Cleveland recently.

The Ravens had Joe Flacco and John Beck take all of the snaps under center at a passing camp.

"Troy Smith got his tonsils out," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. "I think it's about a two-week process. He's eating a bowl of ice cream as we speak, I would guess. Obviously, he had some issues before.

"I'm not sure if it's related exactly, but probably it is. He's had some strep throat issues and stuff."

At this point, the Ravens have yet to bring in another arm to fill the void at practice.

Two seasons ago, Smith had a tonsil infection during the preseason that cost him a chance to win the starting job as the Ravens installed Flacco as the starter.

Troy Smith is back after having tonsils removed
Backup quarterback Troy Smith returned to practice after missing just one passing camp following the removal of his tonsils.

Smith missed the first five games of the 2008 season because of a severe case of tonsillitis. He then dealt with a small bout of tonsillitis and recently had strep throat.

"I just decided that this was enough," Smith said of his decision to have his tonsils removed.

"It was tough but well worth it," he said. "Everything is getting back in order. It?s still trying times when I bark out signals and use my voice. But we have practice. You show up, you got to work."

Open competition for No. 2 quarterback

Troy Smith has been the Ravens' primary backup for the past two seasons, but the former Heisman Trophy winner isn't guaranteed that spot this season.

Smith and John Beck will be battling all summer to become the No. 2 quarterback behind Joe Flacco.

"John and Troy know they?re competing," offensive coordinator Cam Cameron said. "They?re good friends. They?re workers. That?s the way it is. I?m looking forward to training camp."

In his three-year NFL career, Smith has completed 48 of 89 passes (53.9 percent) for 558 yards. He has thrown three touchdowns and one interception for a 79.7 rating.

In his three NFL seasons, Beck has connected on 60 of 107 throws (56.1 percent) for 559 yards. He has recorded one touchdown and three interceptions for a 62.0 rating.

?I think it?s a tremendous situation for both of us, having an understanding that competition is going to get us ? everybody on the field ? to be their best," Smith said. "John is one of my great friends, and Joe is a great friend of mine, too. We have an understanding. We know what our niche is here, and everybody is fitting in, having fun.?

Ravens strike deal with Marc Bulger
Quarterback agrees to one-year, $3.8 million deal
Aaron Wilson
June 23, 2010

The Baltimore Ravens acquired an experienced backup as insurance behind starter Joe Flacco, agreeing to a one-year, $3.8 million contract with former St. Louis Rams starter Marc Bulger.

The contract also includes incentives that can boost the total value of the deal to $5.3 million, a league source confirmed.

Bulger was released this offseason as the Rams drafted University of Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford with the first overall pick of the draft.

Bulger will back up Flacco, a sturdy 6-foot-6, 240-pounder who has never missed a start in his NFL career.

The Ravens could attempt to trade backup quarterback Troy Smith, a former Heisman Trophy winner who requested a trade last season.

For now, they'll have Flacco, Bulger, Smith and John Bech on the roster.
