QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

Practice today...Troy worked with 2nd team

Quarterback Kyle Boller seemed to get the bulk of the reps with the first offense, and he and wide receiver Derrick Mason hooked up often. But Troy Smith and the second offense enjoyed the most success against the first defense in goal-line situations.

Smith rolled out twice for touchdowns, while rookie Joe Flacco connected with tight end Lee Vickers for his only score of the drill. Smith?s only mistake was a pass to rookie wide receiver Ernie Wheelwright that was intercepted by cornerback Corey Ivy. In his best imitation of Deion Sanders, Ivy high-stepped his way down the left sideline for what would have been a touchdown.

Flacco didn't create any waves, good or bad.

* Smith's best play occurred during full-team drills. From the 40-yard line, Smith pump-faked to a running back in the right flat, then floated a pass to rookie wide receiver Justin Harper, who was wide open 20 yards downfield and jogged into the end zone.

RAVENS CAMP NOTES: Day 5 ~ July 29, 2008
Defense dominates again, Flacco and O-Line struggle

Troy Smith looked decisive and well-timed on a quarterback draw for a nice gain. On the play Smith showed a nice burst. Later in practice, Smith lined up as a receiver providing still more evidence that Smith could see playing time in a ?Slash? kind of role even if he isn?t the opening day starter. Smith erred a bit later leading the overworked Ray Rice on a pass right into two oncoming LB?s.

QUARTERBACK DERBY
Kyle Boller and Troy Smith seemed to split most of the snaps under center during full-team drills yesterday morning. Boller remained true to form, playing it safe with short passes, while Smith took a few more chances. He was the only quarterback to throw for a touchdown during red-zone drills, connecting with wide receiver Yamon Figurs on a 15-yard pass. Rookie Joe Flacco displayed a strong arm, but he got off to a questionable start when his first pass was intercepted by linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo.

RAVENS CAMP NOTES: Day 6 ~ July 30, 2008
Offense improves while Flacco struggles, Barnes dominant
By Tony Lombardi
( [email protected] )

Several players were excused from practice today. Those players are part of the 30 and over club. All took advantage of the hall pass extended by John Harbaugh except Matt Stover and Gary Stills. Stills opted to practice and take additional reps at linebacker.

This morning?s practice was a bit sharper than yesterday?s morning session which was dominated by the defense. Today the offense stepped up a bit thanks in part to the improved play of a few offensive tackles after being tossed around like rag dolls on Tuesday.

Up until now, the three quarterbacks were nip and tuck in terms of performance and determining a leader in that competition on a daily basis has been difficult because none of the participants has stood out. Today Kyle Boller and Troy Smith pulled away from Joe Flacco who struggled most of the day.

That said it?s important to note that during practice, Boller and Smith exchanged handling the first team controls while Flacco took fewer snaps and most of them were taken with many players who won?t even make the team. Adding to the personnel advantage that Boller and Smith enjoyed is the fact that many times the first team offense went up against the second team defense while at times, Flacco took on what was left of the first team defense.

Baltimore Ravens | News | 7/30 Notebook

Quarterback Troy Smith threw an interception looking for rookie receiver Justin Harper about 15 yards downfield. When 29-year-old linebacker Robert McCune leapt for the ball, his defensive teammates yelled, ?Thirty and over!?

Smith was up and down, throwing another interception later in practice. But, he also looked sharp leading the offense down the field from his own 20-yard line to a Matt Stover field goal. On the drive, he made three first downs.

Boller fails to capitalize on increased reps
With Smith late arriving, QB gets more practice time, but struggles
By Don Markus | Sun reporter
August 1, 2008

A year ago, hardly anyone would have noticed if Troy Smith missed the first hour-plus of practice.

Today, more than a few fans were heard asking, "Where's Troy?"

It turns out the second-year quarterback was taking a drug test and had trouble providing a urine sample, according to Ravens coach John Harbaugh in his post-practice news conference.

Kyle Boller, provided the opportunity to get more repetitions and perhaps separate himself from his main competition for the starting job in Smith's absence, had the kind of workout that sums up his career in Baltimore -- bad luck and bad decisions.

Boller had one pass picked off by Ray Lewis after the ball sailed through tight end Todd Heap's hands, was pressured into simulated sacks on successive plays and then was intercepted again by Lewis in the end zone during a red-zone drill. He also had a couple of other passes nearly intercepted after underthrowing off his back foot.

Joe Flacco wasn't much better, though for the second time in three days he made his best play with his feet -- a naked bootleg run around left end. The rookie quarterback from Delaware managed to avoid getting sacked today, and he got rid of the ball a couple of times, throwing to open spaces rather than the guys in the other white jerseys.

Smith returned for the last half hour to 45 minutes, and looked sharp in both the 7-on-7 drills as well as the one live 11-on-11 drill.

If the Ravens are going to use the no-huddle, as they did today for the first time this week, Smith would seem to be their man. With the offensive line banged up, and the fact that Smith seems to think better on his feet than Boller when the pocket or play break down, the former Heisman Trophy winner from Ohio State should have the edge.
