QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

if the coaches go strictly on practice, I think Troy becomes the #2 QB. You have to consider the intangibles ne brings on gameday though.

Not to say guys slack or don't give max effort all the time, but Troy gets 110% out of his team. The comments from veterans have comsistently been that Troy is a natural leader and a good football player. I think they'd be more willing to take on an extra big hit to provide time, catch hard balls over the middle, block even harder to keep his jersey clean.

man has he lost some weight.. Great job by Troy in the offseason. I can't wait to see Troy in the preseason games because Troy has never been a great practice player. If Troy was a great practice player he obviously would've beaten Zwick out for the starting job to begin with. If he starts off the year I don't see him looking back.

Troy will be another teams QB in the future ala' Breese. Only reason Flacco will start in the coming years will be because he's already paid so much money. Troy will do well, and he will force this DIVISON 1 wanna be to hold a clip board.

I'm pulling for Troy first and foremost, but if Troy doesn't get it I don't want to see Flacco start. The guy comes off as the only one not being a team player. Both Troy and Boller seem to be putting the team first and I don't get that feeling from Flacco.

Former Heisman winner Troy Smith appears to have the inside track to starting the Ravens' opener against Cincinnati on Sept. 7

Flacco vs. Smith vs. Boller: It's way early in the Ravens' three-man camp quarterback competition, but it's never too early to start reading the tea leaves. I continue to think second-year man Troy Smith has the inside track on starting for Week 1, but do not discount rookie Joe Flacco's chances to force Baltimore into a tough decision over whether to play him right away. "I want to make it an easy decision, and I want to be the guy,'' Flacco told me Tuesday morning, moments after completing his very first NFL training camp practice. "I don't want to make it a tough decision. I want to make it as easy as possible. I want to go out here and prove that I'm the best and it's clear-cut. Those are my expectations.''
Flacco probably had the roughest practice session of his young Ravens career so far -- offseason workouts included -- on Tuesday, but his arm strength and accuracy are still eye-opening at times. He throws the ball on a line, and his delivery looks effortless.
"What you saw today is the worst he's thrown since he's been here,'' new Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said. "I think he's a little amped up. He overthrew a bunch of balls on the outside, but those balls had been on the money before today.''
Smith struggled mightily with his accuracy in Tuesday morning's workout, and if there's a knock on him, that's it. As for sixth-year veteran Kyle Boller, he played it safe mostly, dumping the ball off most of the time. Boller seems destined for Baltimore's No. 3 spot, but I still wonder if having Billick's stamp on him is the biggest hurdle he faces within the Ravens organization.

Camp update: Day 2 in review

QUARTERBACK DERBY
Chalk it up to first-practice jitters or whatever, but Troy Smith looked vastly improved from Tuesday's performance, completing all four of his passes in red-zone drills. Kyle Boller went 4-for-5 but has a tendency to throw behind his receivers. Joe Flacco puts some zip on his passes, hitting his receivers in stride in the hands. But when the pocket is breaking down and there are no options, Flacco has to learn to throw the ball away.

PLAY OF THE DAY

Quarterback Troy Smith bounced back from a rough first day to complete several crisp passes. Among those completions was a touchdown toss to rookie wide receiver Marcus Smith, who beat secondary coach Mark Carrier. Carrier, 40, spent 11 years in the NFL as a defensive back.

QUARTERBACK BATTLE

All three quarterbacks ? Flacco, Smith and Kyle Boller ? were more accurate with their passes Wednesday compared to Tuesday. During red zone drills, Boller and Flacco had just one incompletion each in four attempts. Flacco?s incompletion was a throw away after being pressured by Cody. Boller's incompletion was on a pass dropped by Patrick Carter.

But when the pocket is breaking down and there are no options, Flacco has to learn to throw the ball away.
And that's why it'll come down to one of two things:

#1 Troy wins the job outright and starts Week 1

#2 Flacco wins the job outright and starts Week 1, but after getting sacked 20 times over the first four games, plus the countless hurries and pressures and shots after the ball is released, he'll be done, and it'll be Troy's job by Week 5.

I think this whole QB derby thing is moot, because between the O-Line and the WR corp, this is an offense that is going to need an elusive QB that can keep himself upright and buy his receivers time, or be smart enough to tuck it and pick up 5 or 10 yards on his own.

I hope Troy worked on his sliding this offseason, because the shots he takes scrambling will probably be a lot more brutal than the ones in the pocket. You can take those in college, but not in the NFL.

Baltimore Ravens | News | 7/26 Notebook
  • Quarterback Troy Smith was stellar during full-team drills. With the defensive front seven getting good rushes against his third-string offensive line, Smith was poised in the pocket and moved around well.

On one play, he made a little sidestep to avoid a linebacker and delivered a sharp 15-yard pass to tight end Aaron Walker.
  • Smith also delivered the pass of the afternoon, finding Willis McGahee streaking down the sideline for what must have been a 30-yard bomb. McGahee would have scored on that one.

Troy Smith steps up

I just watched Saturday afternoon practice, and for the first time I saw Troy Smith separate himself from the other quarterbacks. He made some really good throws, two in particular in very tight windows. When he had to make a play, he scrambled out of the pockets to gain some time. You get a little nervous watching these quarterbacks because none of the three competing for the job had played well.
But, it's only the second day. In particular, you have to give Smith and rookie Joe Flacco some time. Plus, it's hard grading these guys because the offensive line has performed so poorly. There have been times when the quarterbacks don't have enough time to even carry out a play fake.
If you get out to training camp, watch tight end Adam Bergen. He hasn't been flashy, but has hung onto everything thrown his way. He has been in the two tight end offense with Sugar Ray Leonard -- oops -- I mean Todd Heap.

This one comes from Mike Preston who's usually pessimistic. Troy must've had himself one hell of a practice.
