The Baltimore Ravens demonstrated their lack of faith in former Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith at the draft.
The Ravens were in talks with St. Louis for the No. 2 overall pick so they could draft Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan but lost out. They then traded for the No. 18 pick, took Delaware quarterback Joe Flacco and pronounced him the team's "quarterback of the future."
With Steve McNair retiring, coach John Harbaugh said there will be an open competition among Flacco, veteran Kyle Boller and Smith, a second-year pro. But it seems clear that Smith isn't likely to have much time at No. 1, even if he wins the job.
First-year offensive coordinator Cam Cameron called Flacco "the perfect fit for what we do." If the Ravens felt that way about Smith, you'd think they wouldn't have tried so hard to use their first pick on a quarterback.
