QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

Pittman and Hall are going to have a field day in East Lansing. There's no doubt in my mind that our offense is going to explode. 2 maybe even 3 TD's if we're lucky.
The only question now is how will our defense play against a talented MSU offense. Even without Stanton, they can still put points up on the board.
I hope so, but it is absolutely pathetic that 2 maybe 3 TD's is an 'explosion' in this offense.

I think we are talking past one another in this thread.

I for one am not saying Troy Smith had a horrid game or stunk up the joint. He was handcuffed - as the QB is always handcuffed - in the JT offense. Within those constraints he played well.

That doesn't translate to 'lighting it up'. Could he have 'lit it up' if given the chance? Maybe. We don't know.

What we do know is that OSU had fewer total yards offense than any of the ten Big Ten teams that played yesterday - including the team we beat. OSU had fewer passing yards yesterday than any other Big Ten team - including the team we beat. Without looking it up I would venture to say not more than one or two teams in all of 1A had fewer passing yards than we did yesterday. We did not 'light it up'.

But to say we didn't light it up in the style of offense Jim Tressel chooses to run is not necessarily a criticism of Troy Smith.

Troy Smith showed he can play well with his hands tied behind his back.

Phil Simms was on one of the national talk shows the other day and he was contrasting the different styles of coaching - one where the coach let's the QB go out and create and make things happen, the other where the coach focuses on not making mistakes. Simms was adamant that the second style was incredibly difficult for a QB. He hated it. His focus was always on what he couldn't do, not what he could do.

It is difficult to criticise a QB who plays in that style of O. Unfortunately, it is also difficult to praise him.

Smith lost a fumble.. that's the same as Zwick. He threw 6-8.

The only thing he does better than Zwick so far is run.
I don't know about that...Smith seems to throw a tighter spiral than Zwick. Zwick's passes look nice at times, but lack zip. And in terms of intangibles, Smith seems to bring something to the table that Zwick does not. Ever listen to Jim Karsatos talk about Zwick? He can't stand the way the guy removes himself from the play after an INT or fumble. After an INT against Marshall, Zwick just stood back and watched the guy run into the end zone for a TD. Smith is the antithesis of that.

Beyond all those factors, Tressel needs to loosen up a lot and give Smith more leeway. His playcalling in yesterday's game does not suggest a great deal of confidence in Smith, and at this point Troy deserves more credit than that.

Penn State showed up to play a very good Iowa team, and they never showed up when playing a bottom-of-the-standings Buckeye team. I'm just thankful that Mills didn't play. It's amazing how you picked the one game that Iowa didn't show up. But then, Maryland beat Miami, State nearly beat scUM, Okla. State nearly beat Okla., and Flor. State was blown out. So what's your point? And as far as campaigning for Zwick, I'm not doing that. The two game I saw him play in high school I was not impressed with him (Mass. lost both games). But I know one think. Let him get any kind of running game behind him, and you're going to see a different Zwick. Just like you're about to see the real Smith. If I'm wrong (and I truly hope that I am, for the Buckeye's sake), I'll be back to eat the humble pie. XOXOXO, Einstein
Seriously.. you come in here and start this huge pissing match and don't even get half of your facts straight. So I'll set one straight that hasn't been yet. MIAMI GOT BEAT BY NORTH CAROLINA.

ugh! You want to come in and argue, check your shit before you post!

RamDrvr1-

Not only did Miami Lose to North Carolina, but Maryland beat Florida State. Seriously you come on here and bash Smith, Ohio State, and Penn State for that matter and you claim to have watched the game? If Troy Smith is SO horrible then why has he completed 60% of his passes thus far? If Troy Smith is SO horrible then why is he even worthy of your words? Seems like you have a definate issue with Troy Smith being our QB. Right now Troy Smith is by far being handcuffed more than Zwick was. Despite being handcuffed Troy has zero Int's, Scrambles Better, and not to mention throws better. IF you watched the game then you wouldv'e seen Smith hit Santonio Holmes on that out pattern that was a rope for 15 yards. Also when was the last time you saw our only true Quarterback Justin Zwick scramble back and forth in the back field to hit Ginn for a first down? Other than the fumble (which would've happened to anyone) I say he tore it up for three reasons. 1) When they called a pass play he hit his mark EVERY TIME the two incompletions were drops, 2) When things broke down he made it happen and got what he could, and 3) He did EVERYTHING he was asked. Both Smith and Zwick are great kids and I just wish what is best for out team, but right now I can see that Smith not only brings something extra to our team; but is also just better at QB. So far I have not ran into a dumber post than what you just wrote..... Go back to Bucknuts.

I'm going to have to agree with OH8 on this. Many of you are saying Penn State's defense is good, well it is. But, their offense is not. We played both. You can't just divide their team in half, quote a bunch of stats, and get the full picture. What the opponent's offense does, affects our approach on offense. We aren't measuring our performance against just their defense. The same way you can't judge a RB's performance without considering the affect of the O-line's performance. As the entire team's performance improves, we will see better performances by individuals. These things all hinge on each other. Because of the great special teams yesterday, our offense didn't need to do much, and Tressel did the right thing by not risking mistakes. After all, "you play to win the game". Was Smith handcuffed? Sure he was, and he should have been. When the time comes where we need Smith to win a game for us, something Zwick has already done BTW, then we'll see where we stand. IMO, I think we're going to have two really nice QB's, but that is just a guess at this point.

Oh good lord people- Can anyone say we know more about Troy than we did after last week? You can Blame Tedd Ginn and Tyler Everett if you are frustrated by this.... The only thing new we know... if anything... is that Troy is a qualified Tresselball Clock Killer... so there rerason number one he gets to start next week...

I'm a little comfused. It's like I watched a different game than some of you. First, that was not a good Penn State team. Off., def., special teams, they all s--ked. If not for the 71 yd. punt, Penn State did nothing. It was as if none of them wanted to be there. If our def. does't score two TD's, we barely win. Our off. was so bad today that most MAC teams would have beat us today. The only QB in the B10 worse than Smith is the one that started for Penn State. The only bad game Zwick had was NW, and by then he had been mugged so badly that he didn't know which way was up. Did anyone notice the panic Smith was in when he had to replace Zwick against Iowa? Oh, that's right. He lead the Buckeyes to their only score. Against Iowa's fourth team defense.
Just remember, after the Cinn. game, everyone loved Zwick. He even threw two long TD's in that one. In two games, Smith hasn't even completed a long pass, or come close. Smith is a WR. Zwick is the only QB we have. You'll see soon enough.

If Smith is allowed to pass more I believe his passing stats will be as good or better than Zwick's. Just from what I've seen of him, he throws a good ball. I like Smith's running ability and I think that is what separates him from Zwick.

well after reading all of this thread.....only a couple of posters have been on target...(mils, nutty and oh8ch)...no offense to the other guys....buckipower you obviously type while wearing your #10 jersey....

there are two things i would like to say on this subject:

one...smith gets to keep playing...hes doing what he is asked and the team has a spark...

two...the last two weeks wins are because of several factors....none of which involves smith...
-zwick starts three road games...all three against tough teams.
-33-97-2.90ypc....thats the average rushing performance for zwick.
-43-213-4.95ypc...thats the average rushing performance for smith.
-smith has played two of the worst three teams in the bigten..at home.
-after the loss to iowa, ron earhardt was brought in to help the offense.
-HelpingHand said he was beyond amazed at the differnce in the offensive line techniques for the Indiana game as compared to the previous games.

this is not meant as anti-smith...just a look at reality.

haha you're very right on that..... I'm now a huge #10 fan thats for sure, however this thread was basically just set up with me ask'n what people thought of his performance! Well since we won and he did very well in what he was aloud to do I'm obviously going to stand up for the kid when people say different. Also this thread was not stating that our defense was better than there offense but rather that OSU's Offense against Penn States Defense. Which I thought if they got the ball alittle more that Our Offense wouldv'e done some good things with it.

Dihard- Very good points and awesome stats.... However It seems like many of you are acting like Indiana/Penn State are push overs........ As a whole YES... as defensive Units NO. Indiana is still Indiana but they have beat Oregon, and Now Minnesota (yes minnesota that leads the big ten in rushing). As for Penn State they're definatly a horrible team as a WHOLE. As a defensive stand point no they're an excellent team with them being 2nd in the big ten. I agree that as a whole Troy Smith hasn't faced the best teams, but Troy Smith is only facing the defense and thats all he can worry about. In saying that I don't think its fair to blame either Indiana or Penn States Record on their defenses. Because letz face it both of their offenses are alot worse than their defenses.

Also other important stats is that Indiana with 3 Touchdowns passes on them for 40+ yards lost to Michigan 35-21. We Scored 30 points on them but held them to less points. Does that mean we're better than michigan? we'll find out Nov. 21 , but Indiana's and Penn State's Records are not indicative of how hard their defenses play.
